Your Thoughts About: #44 Eric Gelinas

Recommended Posts

He would be the one young D I would trade. If his defense improves, I think a number of teams would be very interested.

Agree! If we are going to trade one of the younger Dmen I would probably choose him over our others. If he can clean up his defensive game he could be a real asset.

Considering he has doubled his number, I fully expect him to be twice as good this year.

Hoping the new staff can get more out of him than the old one.  The idea of him with John Moore fills me with dread.  Hrabarenka and Mozik are coming for his job, too.

This is true.  If anyone is going to be in the doghouse, it's gotta be one of Gelinas-Moore.  Get bumped to 7th on the chart by one of Hrabarenka and Mozik.  Hrabarenka is 6'5" and suppose to be a pretty good skater, had a great year with the A-Devs.  Helgeson is really going see time, but only due to injury i would think.

typically,  don't most pmd have defensive shortcomings. (which I consider Gelly) It comes with the territory. typically lousy plus/minus etc. Hraberanka is very mobil & big. Seen him a few times & offensively wants the puck all the time. I'm sure he got Hyne's attention last year.  We're fortunate we've got a couple good D men in pipeline

His two-year deal ensures that this season isn't now-or-never, but I gotta see him start to make some progress.  He's still young, but not a kid anymore.

I know he's not excellent defensively but looking at this stat i don't know why so many fans are bashing him. He has a role and that's it.

Devils fans had to buy into the defence first mentality for so long that if a guy come along and he's not excellent defensively he's sh!t to them. Or at least that's the feeling i'm getting. And it goes both ways, among some fans it's like its fine if a forward is not producing but its fine here cause he's good defensively and does things right? Again that's a role and you need all kinds of guys to build a team. You need goals to win, we have an excellent goalie. So i'd stop with that old mentality that a guy is useless if he's not good defensively, its really not better than a forward who's good on the D but can't score and if that's not obvious to anyone here by now after the last few season well i dont know what to say lol

Loved him for his shot when he first came here.. but I feel like he wasn't able to use it to his advantage much at all last season.

I felt the same way, during his rookie season it seemed like he used that shot of his alot more

I've always been a big proponent for Gelinas.  I think that he has a great chance to be that special player that everyone has to game plan against.  Sure players that make the sound play is what a team needs to be mostly composed of, but just like PK Subban and Ovechkin, you make sacrifices because of the unique things they can do for your team.  Plus, Gelinas is still young.  If he can even warrant a 2nd pairing ES minutes and keep his offense up, the whole D can make up for a lot of what the forwards lack.

I'm not even that impressed by his puck-moving skills.  He often looks lost when he's moving the puck through the neutral zone.  He's able to do it, and he's able to get better, but he simply has to show he can handle top four minutes, and he simply hasn't done that.  You can't argue he's a good player if you're basing that opinion on his powerplay effectiveness.  Being good ONLY on the powerplay doesn't make him good, it makes him at best a poor-mans offensive defenseman and at his worst, a powerplay specialist.  He needs to prove something.  Besides the obvious powerful and strong shooting skills, he needs to learn better judgement on hitting and checking.  I loved some of the big hits he would dish out at times, but they often left him out of position, as in almost everything else he does.

Idk if I said it here but I've said it before:  he's already the next MA Bergeron.  He's young enough to be better than that.  He has to get better defensively to be a force.  If he can handle top 4 minutes and still be what he is now, he's PK Subban.  He was a forward in juniors.  It's up to him to decide if he can be a defenseman.

Marc-Andre Bergeron played the prime of his career in the power play era.  Eric Gelinas is coming up when power plays are rarer now than they were at any time in the last 30 years.  In 2005-2006, Bergeron's Oilers had 485 power plays.  In 2013-2014 and 2014-2015, the Devils had a combined 455 power plays.  It's not worth carrying a power play specialist in this day and age unless you really have a great rest of your team - a player has to do more.  I don't expect Gelinas to ever be average at even strength, but even if he's just below average, he's a guy worth having.  Last season was a trainwreck, but playing with Fraser couldn't've helped.  Gelinas not only has poor instincts of when to play the man versus the puck, he gets beaten too easily 1 on 1 and took too many penalties.

There's the flashes of greatness there but they came less and less last season.  Eric Gelinas has the physical skills of a Subban with the puck, but the mental game isn't close.

I agree with everything you have said.  But I just see Gelinas as a boom or bust.  I'd rather see him boom or bust with us than otherwise with another team.  He's been a forward his whole life.  The Devils have been one of the lower teams with PPs forever with the MAB Oilers as at least somewhat higher.  I don't see 30 PPs between the super high level 2006 Oilers and the Devils super low lever now as that statistically significant.  Especially if he is better at the PP than Weber and all the other levels that Sterio showed before.  I still say if he can be a 3rd pairer, he's tolerable, and as a 2nd pairer he's AMAZING.  Right now, he's not a 3rd pairer, but also this team is pathetic.  Might as well take the chance about this team doing something something special for than just another role player, like Merrill.

Wha-Wha-Whaat?  Merril as just a role-player?  What role is that?!  Defensemen don't truly have roles, they have to be responsible defensively and after that, help create offense whenever possible.  He's one of eight defenseman and will likely get top 4 minutes with Severson. He had a sophomore slump, which happens more often than not in the NHL nowadays, and on top of that, he hasn't even played a full 82 game season yet.  Merril is going to have a pretty big role on this team in the coming years, and a much bigger role than Gelinas will ever have on this team.

I've heard some downright silly things on this board, but holy sh!t dude.

So your points are Merrill doesn't play full seasons, 50% of his seasons you would characterize as bad but he's God's gift to the Devils.  Did I summarize your point of view properly?  Better yet, defensemen don't have roles apparently.  How does that make any sense?  I always called players PMD, Offensive Defensemen, Stay-at-Home Defensemen, PP/PK Specialists, etc and treated the player as such but apparently I was wrong.

Merrill I think will be a good player, but he's not going to be a difference maker.  That's not a knock on him, it's just that he isn't going to be Chara, Weber, Doughty, etc.  He very well may play a bigger role than Gelinas, but that's why I called Gelinas a boom or bust.  Higher floor:  Merrill.  Higher ceiling:  Gelinas.  What can I say, I am enamored with Gelinas's high ceiling.  But what do I know, I'm just a downright silly poster that called Merrill a role player.  Holy sh!t.
