Kovalchuk removed from SKA after 1 Playoff Game

No Clue who this guy is but:

Kovalchuk's agent confirms that he hasn't had a serious conversation with any GM in the NHL, but has talked to one about possible arrival

When asked if it by any chance the GM is Shero, he stated that he will not confirm or deny it.

I'm told that if Kovalchuk can't get something done today, he could stay with SKA until the end of the post season.

Ilya Kovalchuk's agent has confirmed that he has requested to have his contract with SKA Saint Petersburg be terminated.

He has also been in contact with one NHL GM about returning to the league.

How the bolded may have gone down:

Ilya (calling the Devils):  "Ray Shero please."

Shero:  "Yes?"

Ilya:  "Hello Mr. Shero, this is Ilya Koval..."

Shero:  "Aw go fvck yourself."  click

Ilya (to self):  "Well, I guess if anyone asks, I can say I was in contact with one NHL GM about returning to the league."

He's coming...

That's what she said...

If this all pans out and Kovy is back in a Devils uniform, he's going to get some really loud boos when he first takes the ice.  It will dissipate over time the way it did for Gomez, but I don't think that baby's fragile ego could handle it.   Hope his home in Alpine is finished.

I have nothing to add, other than that I don't usually leave myself vulnerable to a "that's what she said". I'm off my game today. Which she also said.

Very well played.

Guess this wasnt totally true:

Reports that Ilya Kovalchuk has been released by SKA are not true, both sides are still working on a solution

SKA have offered Kovalchuk a compensation of 1mil dollars if he agrees to terminate his contract after April 1st. Discussions ongoing

#BREAKING Ilya Kovalchuk will stay with SKA until atleast April 30th, but won't play during the playoff.

Guess money still talks....

On the one hand - pretty sure I'd do a lot worse things for a million bucks.

On the other - can't help but feel this guy's a money-hungry egomaniac.

This should have been obvious years ago but people always look for excuses and rationalizations for this player.

Walk out on a 12-year contract?  He was doing the franchise a favor because of cap issues instead of taking advantage of what was on paper a bigger payday.  Sign a $100 million contract that we get docked two picks for?  He was somehow lauded for being unselfish and letting us have a reasonable cap number while he got his $85 million in the first ten years of the deal and everyone knew the last few were still a sham.  Get dragged back to NJ kicking and screaming post-lockout?  Get lauded for not wanting to leave his team instead of criticized for not going back to the team he was contracted to :P

Take this with a grain of salt but my brother showed me a rumor posting on the Devils Facebook page. Apparently a limo driver for EWR and season ticket holder picked up Kovy from the airport and drove him to the arena, when pressed for questions, he would only smirk and say "we'll see what happens"

This was posted two days before the SKA playoffs
