2016 New York Jets thread

Saw this stat on Rotoworld (for those who watched the entire game, you probably already know this): "Andy Dalton targeted A.J. Green 10 times in Darrelle Revis’ coverage. He completed all 10 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown."

I could be citing the wrong place but I believe PFF also graded Revis very poorly in the second half of last year. How the mighty have fallen...

Really hope Watkins doesn't play this week or is limited, although despite Mehta and Schefter's comments he only missed 8 snaps this weekend, fwiw.

I remember being pretty bummed that the Patriots didn't try harder to keep him (after a slow start to his lone season with NE, he played to about 90-95% of what he had been in his prime...he was very very good)...but I kept telling myself that BB and the Pats are usually right about this stuff.  I haven't watched a ton of Revis since he went back to the Jets, but I do remember reading an article here and there last season about how he's been fading.  Not easy for a lot of corners once they reach their 30s...but Revis in his prime was damned good.  No disputing that.

It also goes to show how our recent draft whiffs at CB have come back to haunt us. Milliner, top 10 pick...atrocious. Dex McDougle. Terrible 3rd round pick. Not even good enough to be a serviceable backup. (Gabe Jackson taken immediately after McDougle. Nice job Idzik)

Also...Kyle Wilson. Another bad one. We got nothing out of CB the past drafts

To his credit, at least Revis is already accepting the fact that he will have to switch to safety sooner than later:

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/jets-darrelle-revis-starting-to-feel-his-age-1.12283828

Pats had to do the same (obviously MUCH earlier in his career) with Devin McCourty, who after his rookie season was atrocious as a corner.  He's been a good safety since the move (he's still a very shaky corner, which unfortunately he is still asked to be on occasion).  So Revis might still have something left in the tank at a different position.

Revis was still good last season. Sometimes very good. And I didn't notice that big a pronounced drop off late in the season. Though yes he was torched by Watkins the final game. But yesterday was scary bad, and if that was a true sign as to where he is right now then he may be playing safety as soon as next season.

Revis is still a very good tackler with a nose for the ball, so I think he'd be a good safety.

I actually found Idzik's level of incompetence offensive, as a general sports fan.  We've all seen some bad execs (Mike Milbury, Isaiah Thomas, Matt Millen), but Idzik was just such a complete disaster...I still can't believe how terrible he really was.

You know he really didn't have an awful first year here. 8-8 in a rebuilding year.

2nd year...ugh that was bad. His complete failure to find any sort of WR and overall draft busts were ridiculous. Glad they ended that experiment fast

I actually think the first Idzik year was more or less Rex's last stand here and a less obvious tank job than the second season. Idzik really didn't do anything other than bring in Decker and not screw up the Sheldon pick the way he screwed up the rest of his drafting. Idzik the second year was not only historically bad drafting but went the full Rachel Phelps undermining Rex, only it worked too well and the team was so bad (not to mention that infamous mid season presser where everyone knew this guy would never cut mustard in NY) he was gone too.

The 8-8 team really shouldn't have even been 8-8, they pretty much pulled out every close game (the Tampa game was divine intervention) and got blown up by 35 the games they lost.

Agree Has, I thought Rex turned in a terrific season...that team had absolutely no business going 8-8.  He squeezed every last win out of that team.  It was almost like Idzik followed that up with "Fine Rex, now win 8 games with THIS team!"  And that presser...goddamn...he should've been fired before he was even finished.

2000: Jets hire Defensive Coordinator Al Groh, a first time Head Coach with no prior experience. 2001: Jets hire Defensive Coordinator Herman Edwards, a first time Head Coach with no prior experience. 2006: Jets hire Defensive Coordinator Eric Mangini, a first time Head Coach with no prior experience. 2009: Jets hire Defensive Coordinator Rex Ryan, a first time Head Coach with no prior experience. 2015: Jets hire Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles, a first time Head Coach with no prior experience. We're the first team in NFL history to hire 5 consecutive DC's as rookie HC's. --why stop there though? Why not make it 6 in-a-row? Why not hire Kris Richard in 2017 after the Bowles experiment fails? Then we can hire Gregg Williams and make it 7 in-a-row in 2019. Then we can hire Vic Fangio after that to make it 8 in-a-row. And so on, and so on, and so on. Maybe we can start recycling glorified DC's in the 2020's. We can bring back Herman Edwards, and then Al Groh after that. Or maybe we can do it Lamoriello style.. and have Co-Head Coaches Rex Ryan & Eric Mangini AT THE SAME TIME. You never really know with the Jets.

What I do know is this: We out played Cincinnati in every facet top-to-bottom yesterday.. and we still lost. We didn't make any adjustments at halftime.. we didn't put our players in a position to execute against the Bengals weaknesses.. we had an opportunity to go up 14-0, but sh!t our pants. We were the better team...... and lost........ just like we did 3 games (of 6) that we lost LAST season. I must say.. I haven't completely given up on Todd Bowles just yet.. but he was outcoached\outclassed yet again, and I'm really REALLY getting sick and fvcking tired of it.

Meanwhile in New England... no Brady? --no problem. And no Gronk no problem. (while we're at it) No Ninko, no Dion, no Vollmer, no Solder, no Cooper.... on the road.... against a damn good team.... with a rookie QB making his first NFL start....................... No........Problem! Business as usual, with an ever changing cast of characters in Foxboro. Ever changing, except, of course.. their Head Coach... Bill Belichick. (who's now 13-5 since 2008.. with Jimmy Garappolo, Ryan Mallett, and Matt Cassel) And that's what separates them from the Jets, the Bills, and Miami in this Division for the last 10 years. That's what separates the elite teams from everyone most of the time. They may not have the best team(s) in front of them all the time.. but if they're Bill Belichick, or Sean Payton, or Mike McCarthy, or Tom Coughlin, etc.. you can rest easy that they will come up with exceptional gameplans that play to their players strengths. It's the reason why whenever a John Fox or Andy Reid shake free, smart organizations give them whatever they want. But Head Coaches don't make big plays. They don't sell tickets, and they don't sell jerseys.. so Woody doesn't value them. Which is why it's been over 20 years since we actually hired our last HC, who came with a resume. (Tuna)

..so we'll continue to wait and roll the dice on DC's instead. And lose games we should have won.

You know I thought Woody had every intention of bringing him back the next season...8-8 was an unexpectedly positive result. 4-12 the next season was a disaster but you'd figure he'd get one mulligan. The way he handled himself there and the subsequent media lynching sealed his fate(Francesa had an epic rant too). The press conference was nothing more than a sort of midseason state of the Jets. I doubt he'd even give one if they were already thinking of firing him. But just the way he was flustered...stammered, just showed that the spotlight was too bright.

fwiw Idzik is still in pro football. Cap consultant for the Jags...which is probably all he's good for.

Good point regarding the first time coaches. I never really thought about that. I guess some of our lingering clock management issues and preparedness issues stem from that. But you look at the vet coaches hired during that time period...Shanahan, Jeff Fisher, Norv Turner, Lovie Smith, have not exactly worked out.

fwiw Bowles was technically not a first time coach. Coached 3 games for the Dolphins :P

Overall I believe the results have been positive with Bowles. He's not incompetent, doesn't look overwhelmed...the players play hard for him and never quit. He runs a tight, disciplined no BS ship. There will be growing pains but overall I thing the combination of Maccagnan and Bowles are about as good as we've ever had it. Maccagnan is showing he's an above average talent evaluator.

I guess if we put the Cinci loss in perspective, they are a perpetual Playoff/Super Bowl pick, that is a team that's loaded with talent. The game was an absolute tossup. It happens. I don't think it's really an indictment on the Bowles era just yet. But things may change if they lay an egg in Buffalo.

The funny part is all our first-time coaches look great to start with and then later on is when the warts came out.  Bowles is following the same pattern though he didn't make the playoffs his first year a la Rex, Mangini and Herm he did go 10-6.

The last time we hired a pure offensive coach was I guess Joe Walton and that didn't work out great either though.  I guess Kotite too though he wasn't a first-timer amazingly enough :P

The odd thing about Kotite is that he was the last Jets offensive coordinator that the fans really didn't complain about. (back in the 80's)

I still have no idea how Kotite was hired. I think the word was out about him around the league how he had pretty much been promoted to his level of incompetence and just wouldn't put the time and effort in to be a good coach.

If the Jets lose this game they should be shot at dawn.  This secondary should already all be DFA'ed baseball style :P

And Sheldon Richardson should be suspended another game just for being Sheldon Richardson...how on EARTH do you get a taunting penalty on a play where you give up an 85-yard TD?!

If they lost this game it would be a tragedy.

This game was the football version of two fighters throwing haymakers at each other all night. It was big play after big play back and forth up and down the field, massive chunks of yardage at a time. Every time the Jets had them on the ropes the Bills would get an enormous break and crawl back into it. And to their credit they hit some big plays down the field as well (after Goodwin hauled in that TD burning Revis I flat out wanted him to retire on the spot)

It was so nice to see Fitzpatrick poised and aggressive. Made amazing throws all night. Found his man coverages and put the ball in perfect places for his receivers to make plays on it. Ripping off 20-30-40 yard chunks at a time. It was magnificent to see. This is the best I've ever seen him and it's so good to finally have real receiver depth. Enunwa is good. Jalin Marshall is good (and nice job Bowles sticking with him after that fumble)

This was not an easy environment. Home opener Bills game at night with a lot of very loud drunkards. The Bills may not be that good but that stadium was a hornets nest last night.

And to see an offense do that to a Rex defense is almost unheard of. If there is one thing Rex always hangs his hat on it's stopping the run. Even when he's getting beat, you flat out can't run on him. Well they ran on him last night. And they threw on him last night. And if it wasn't for a few drops Fitzpatrick would have 400 yards passing and the Jets would've had 500 yards of total offense on a Rex defense. That's impressive. That's all out offensive domination.

Our secondary on the other hand....*pukes*

I saw that...honestly it was benign and a bit of a reputation call. But he redeemed himself with the big 4th and 1 stop.

Still Sheldon has to be more like big Mo and less like Willie Colon.

A defining win, albeit Week 2 for the New York Jets.

With 0-2 staring them in the face (and possibly 0-4, if they lost last night) the Jets gave one of the more gutsier performances I've seen in a WHILE! They showed poise, they showed character. They showed they're a team to be taken seriously. Every year I say: "the Jets should be ____ right now" (based off a game they lost that should've won) and this season is no different. We should 2-0 right now.. and even with a thrilling win last night against Rex, that Cincy game still hurts. Hopefully it won't come back to haunt us at the end of the season, the way that Eagles game did in Week 3 last year. We'll see what happens. It's going to be very difficult to try and steal a win in KC next week, but at least the staff has an extra 3 days to prepare schemes. -----Some other observations:

  • Ryan Fitzpatrick: Simply put.. last night was the greatest game of his career. He put on a Brady performance, and yes.. I just said that. 70% completion percentage, with 3 drops (the Marshall one killer) no interceptions, no turnovers, a 116.5 QB rating, 375 yrds with the arm, 25 more with the legs. Is Fitzpatrick an "elite" quarterback? -no. But last night was the type of game elite quarterbacks play. The trick with Fitz, is to get him to play like he did last night on a more consistent basis. If he can, then the Jets.. with this defense.. can be very VERY scary. Dare I say, Ryan Fitzpatrick may've single-handedly won the game for the Jets last night.
  • Quincy Enunwa: 150 yrds these last 2 weeks.. making the catches WHEN THEY COUNT THE MOST, on 3rd downs. I know it's only 2 games, but he looks like the most improved Jet this year, from last season to this season. Gailey finds new ways to create mismatches for Q each and every week. And the more opposing teams start to double him, the more that's going to leave Decker\Marshall open in coverage. Absolutely LOVE what I see thus far.
  • The O-Line: On an offensive line without Breno Giacomini or James Carpenter.. it's no wonder why we began hearing Willie Colon rumors @ halftime. But the performance that Wesley Johnson displayed last night.. and Brian Winters over the last 2 games, is enough to put you at ease. The quick 3 second passes \ 3 step drop gameplan(s) have helped, without question. But Fitz has thrown the ball a mindboggling 70 times these past 2 weeks, and they haven't all been quick outs. He has time in the pocket, and that's a testament to Winters & Johnson.
  • Revis: It pains me to say this.. but Revis isn't Revis anymore. There's no shame in admitting it, he's going to be 32.. and as great as he is, Father Time is undefeated. I don't think it's time to move him to Safety just yet. But Bowles needs to have effective plans in place to help him throughout the remainder of the year.
  • Front 7: They did a great job again last night, despite Buffalo getting away with A TON of holding.
  • Matt Forte: If he keeps up his pace, and stays healthy.. he'll find himself in his 3rd Probowl. 200 yrds, 3 TD's over the last 2 weeks.. with solid blocking on passing plays. He has fit in well thus-far with Gailey's system.
  • The White Out: This is yet another thing I find myself saying every season.. DO AWAY WITH THE GREEN PANTS\JERSEY! I'm too lazy to look it up, but the Jets seem to always play great with the white-on-white getups. I didn't think the white gloves\socks\shoes\facemask would make a difference going into the game but I was wrong. They looked great out there.

There might not be anyone on the planet that's as big a RR supporter as me. I love Rex.... but he's done. He's won 26 games over his last 70 now, going all the way back to 2011. If it's not for those first 2 seasons in 2009 & 2010.. I honestly don't know if he'd even be in the league as a HC anymore. He brings in his nWo cronies to Buffalo with him.. Ed Reed, who has no coaching experience.. and his brother Rob, who's on his 4th different team as a DC since 2011.. and the results have been putrid. The Bills have allowed over 800 yrds over the last 2 games, with quality players looking completely lost out there on the field.

Last year Rex Ryan help end our season. Last night, the Jets may've helped end Rex Ryan's career.

The guy who's really screwed is Rob Ryan.  Rex will probably get another shot as a D-coordinator after he gets fired this season.  Rob has overseen some beyond awful defenses for years now...I can't see him ever getting another shot...the only reason he even got this one was because of his brother.

Rob Ryan has been mostly terrible for a very long time. 31st rank defense consecutive years with N.O. in terms of yards allowed. He was awful with the Browns. I have no idea how he keeps getting hired. Granted he never really presided over defenses with even average talent on the field but...he needs to at least show that he can get a squad to overperform even a little bit. Show that the sum is greater than the parts. Other than having Buddy's name Rob Ryan has shown pretty much zilch at the NFL level

Rex can still be redeemed but it wont be for a little while. He has to do some soul searching. He has to take his lumps and change.
