Yeah, reasonably sure the security guards know absolutely nothing about the team, let alone management decisions like jersey designs.

So I lied, it wasn't a security guard at the Rock. The only thing I actually know is that they have hired a new employee who is a branding expert. The rest is just chatter/speculation I'm hearing about why he would leave from his old team. No reason to leave unless being in charge of complete rebrand which logic would say would come with the new jerseys in 17/18.

Employees of the old team, what comes from the branding expert and what is made up by them, I'm not sure, but that's what I've been hearing.

If true, I doubt the team will change their current jerseys.  I think it's more of a third jersey change.

Apparently from what I've been hearing from very reliable source is that for next year, the teams will be wearing the same Edge jerseys but with the Adidas logo instead of the Reebok logo.  The following year the teams will change to a new style uniform that is "in the spirit of Edge" but not Edge.  Think of it as same basic shape but different materials.  The WCH jerseys are actually a bit of a preview of them.  He also said that from what he hears it's doubtful that the Adidas stripes make it to the NHL jerseys.

Our jerseys are perfect. No need to change them.

If they want a third jersey it should be the retro - but I have no problem introducing a non-retro third.

But our jerseys to me - are inconic with our glory days.

Yeah... If they touch the jerseys, I'm gonna be pissed... Our jerseys are timeless, and we won three Stanley Cups in them. THERE IS NO NEED TO ALTER THE JERSEYS IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER. And I'm sick of the NHL constantly changing stuff- just when we're finally used to the Edge jerseys, now they have to have Adidas get involved... Just leave the damn jerseys alone, THEY'RE FINE.

Of course... Sadly, it's all that matters anymore.

Michael Kay today was absolutely clueless as to how the ads will start to effect branding and Jersey layouts, basically saying "I dont get what the big deal is its just a 2x2 square" and his PD made the argument that it will only get worse, and as big a soccer fan as he is he will never buy a soccer Jersey. I would never pay money for a Jersey with an ad on it, no matter how big, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

You aren't. I won't buy one either. I've said it a hundred times- you have literally placed ads on every piece of reasonably available space in the arena and on the ice. When is enough enough?! The jerseys are sacred. LEAVE THEM THE fvck ALONE.

That falls into the category of "I'd buy one only if I have to". I wouldn't go out of my way, but if the Devils get a player I want and that's what they are wearing at the time, AND non-ad versions are not available ( I strongly believe they will be), then I'd have no choice.

I wouldn't even do that, and I made that decision when Reebok came out with the Edge crap.  All of my Devils jerseys are pre-Edge, and if there's a player they've picked up since then and I want his jersey, I get one of a different team he played for (college, junior, international, etc.)

Well I can't go that hardcore. But I definitely prefer pre-Edge 1000 times over.

My guess is there are two factors in jersey changes. First, obviously is $$$. The second is how it looks on television. Black is a big visual impact.

What annoys me is all the other teams wearing red/black.Can't the league control this?

If they could, wouldn't they give it to the Blackhawks before the Devils?

I'd be up for them limiting the insane number of teams, but yeah Chicago definitely deserves first crack.

Gotta imagine any Vegas team will strive for black and red for the casino theme

I don't agree with limiting the colors, there's too many teams and a lot of them have traditionally had some overlap. i don't think there are any jerseys that are substantially similar in design despite the use of the same colors.

CC, also trust me that there was not much attachment to the red and greens at the time.  I was 22 when the switch was made and lived about 20 mins away from the arena, so I was going to games on a whim constantly (and had been since 1988).  I don't claim to know everyone of course, but I didn't meet one fan who thought the new jerseys were a bad move and who felt the green must be kept part of the color scheme, no matter what.  I think you're tying way too much importance to that.

I do like the retro nights though...it's just enough, and even though I don't ever want to see the old jerseys replace the current ones, I'll always have a soft spot for them.  They're a big part of this team's history.  I just think, outside of being dusted off for retro nights, they should stay there.

Oh I don't doubt it whatsoever. I'm making the argument from my perspective, someone who never saw the team in green. I just think it's more meaningful than the black, but I don't doubt people didn't like it at the time, or that a vast majority of people wouldn't like it now.

Adidas stripes would certainly shake the foundation of my adoration for NHL hockey. It's one of the reasons I just can't take MLS as seriously as I would like to. I know the edge jerseys are all just the same template with team brands colored in, but adding something like Adidas stripes to every jersey would take that to the extreme.

How is red and black a casino theme? I imagine black and gold.

Probably because on court there aren't many ads. On ice, all around the boards are ads and sponsors. They should leave the jerseys alone. No need for color changing. And the NHL should not puts ads on jerseys.
