RFA Qualifying Offers Due by 5 PM

QOs are due by 5 - if a player doesn't get one, he's a UFA on July 1.  There should be some interesting non-tendered players around the league.

For the Devils, their RFAs are:

Palmieri, Kalinin, Bennett, Josefson, Smith-Pelly, Boucher, Merrill, Hrabarenka, Scarlett

It wouldn't surprise me if Kalinin and Hrabarenka are non-tendered.

Devils do not extend QOs to RFAs: Beau Bennett, Raman Hrabarenka, Jon Merrill, Devante Smith-Pelley

Devils extend qualifying offers to RFAs: QO Reid Boucher, Jacob Josefson, Sergey Kalinin, Kyle Palmieri and Reece Scarlett

Can someone please explain the non-QOs, especially for Bennett, and how that possibly makes sense?  I also don't know why none extended to Merill or DSP?

EDIT:

Re: Non-QO'd RFAs (namely Bennett, Merrill, Smith-Pelley): Devs still have rights until July 1. Team hopeful/confident all can be signed.

Geez Shero's taking a huge gamble that these guys don't just wait three days and decide to go FA.

I just hope there are deals more or less worked out already.  You almost think there has to be.  Otherwise, I really don't see this making any sense at all.

EDIT:

Just to clarify with non-QO'd Devils RFAs, team reported to me "positive talks" with all. Devils believe deals will be done by July 1.

The reason teams do this is usually to avoid either mandatory raises or the possibility of arbitration.   I think it would be pretty stupid for any of these guys to go elsewhere -Hrabarenka excepted because I think he's gone - but that's how the Devils ended up with John Moore last year, so who knows.  Merrill's injured, Bennett has his AHL coach and the GM who drafted him here, and Smith-Pelly just got out of purgatory in Montreal.  I think we'll see all 3 back here.

I don't care of they're in "positive talks" - this is a ridiculously stupid move. Why give the player the option to go the UFA route?

Absolutely do not understand this.

Well this is quite ironic and i think we will all agree on this.

If this situation would happen and that Lou was still GM here. I'd be bashing it right now and you'd likely be jumping on me trying to justify Lou's actions.

But... here we are. I'm all calm and you're the one bashing the move lol

but hey, in the end i'm glad you finally agree with me that it's stupid to give the option to players to go the UFA route. haha

If they risk losing those guys, I'm not sure it's a "huge gamble". None of those guys are of any importance. It's not like they didn't extend an offer to Palmeri.

They're not exactly in the position where they can afford to shed three players good enough to be regulars in an NHL lineup, well two plus the guy they just gave up a third rounder for.  Especially if they do very little in FA, which is what I expect.

Nobody should have to bother to explain this to SD because he's become a troll...but there's a difference between the player exercising an option to become a UFA that he was due and GIVING the player the option to become a UFA when he didn't have that leverage.  And yes they'll all probably be signed but it wouldn't shock me if one or two of them weren't.

Pretty much have the same thoughts as everyone else here... surprised that those 3 weren't tendered offers, but at the same time I feel like the team knows what they're doing and wouldn't take the risk if they thought there was any chance any of them would test the market.

They're not going to shed 3 players.  The whole reason that you can do this is because these guys don't have a better place to go.

Shero probably reading the online forums saying merrill should be dropped for a bag of pucks.

Clearly shero isn't dumb enough (I hope) to let bennett and DSP walk when we traded assets for them. You'd have to think he was at least 90% positive a deal would get done.

This may have to do with the expansion draft next year and the limited amount of protection of players. If any of the RFAs walk, Shero may be looking into the future at the compensation picks from the teams involved. Picks and the rookies are protected next year, just a speculative thought with this ongoing rebuild and the expansion monkey wrench.

That makes sense, but unless I'm just misunderstanding... since they weren't qualified they're actually UFAs and if they chose to leave we're owed essentially nothing.

Reading some blogs/articles....DSP is as good as gone if the Devils don't sign him today.  A young big, tough forward who showed a little scoring touch in a limited role last year - teams will not hesitate to spend a little for a player like this.

Bennett/Merrill - probably not as attractive as DSP, but someone looking for a 5-6 D with experience might bite on Merrill.

With all the joy of the Hall trade yesterday, these non-tenders could bite Shero in the butt.  Teams aren't built on one star player.
