'7'
Could the Browns be an early contender for 0-16? Bills week 15. I dont see them having much of a chance beating anybody else.

Plug 'em in and wind 'em up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk That was outrageous...never expected that result. The gameplan was perfect...it's pretty clear from the now roughly 1.5 games we've seen of Brissett that his arm is barely NFL-ready...and BB, McDaniels & Co decided they would make sure that they would never have to rely on it to try to win the game, and smartly minimized the throwing part of Brissett's game. Special teams had so much to do with this win...Pats probably don't crack 20 points without their contributions...Allen had one hell of a punting game as well. The D played one of its best games in quite some time (and some offensive gaffes on Houston's part also helped). And McDaniels was just creative and tricky enough on offense to put some points on the board, on the occasions where special teams didn't set up the offense with killer field position (which led to 14 points). Credit to various offensive players (especially receivers) who knew that their personal numbers were going to take a hit in a game like that, but all seemed just as committed as they would've been if Brady had been out there leading his team to 35+ points and throwing for 350+ yards. I would've taken 2-2 through 4 weeks before the season started. I honestly don't care what happens against Buffalo...of course a win would be awesome, but 3-1 under these circumstances...not one single complaint, even with the D occasionally looking way too porous in Weeks 1 and 2. nmigliore
Pats are truly remarkable with their game preparation. Josh McDaniels will get another shot at being a head coach in this league very, very soon.
'7'
Say what you will about the Texans kickoff fumbles and such but...they scored 0 points. The Patriots did sort of hide, limit, and play to Brissetts strengths but that's what good teams do. Where was Watt and the supposed strong Houston D? Nowhere. Totally taken out of the game. It's weird how this Texans team totally inherited the legacy of the old Houston Oilers. Talented but persistent big spot underachievers. Playoff failures, wimps on the road. Patriots did everything right in this game and their game plans are better without Brady than with. Are they a better TEAM long term without him. Of course not. But I've seen a lot of sloppy efforts where N.E. gives up 35 points and Belichick is going for 4th and 6s on his side of the field but Brady pulls them out of the fire with a win in the last second. That kind of weird stuff isn't happening now, they are airtight.

Oh no, I agree completely with the bolded...it was a total team effort, from the coaching staff to every last player on all sides of the ball...everyone needed to contribute to hide the rookie QB's very raw arm (and overall lack of knowledge and familiarity I'm sure with many aspects of the offense). Houston didn't help their cause one bit with a couple of very bad drops, and just some general miscues...but the Pats had just about everything to do with this win. I never realized the Oilers-Texans link, but man did you nail that one. I absolutely see that now. Yeah, I do think there's definitely been times where Brady constantly leading his team to 500+ points meant the team became sometimes just a little bit lax in other areas...my issue with some of the recent Pats teams has been the fact that Brady is always being asked to carry the load, but whenever the D is asked to do it on the rare occasions that Brady and the O aren't getting it done, they usually don't. The Pats have had some awful defenses in several of the more recent seasons, and more than once those units have been exposed come playoff time (even in their own building)...and they've given up some big drives at the end of games where they're getting carved up with complete ease. I agree, I think Brady being out has led to the ENTIRE staff to work harder than they have in years (and they already work pretty damned hard), and you really saw the results of that last night...just a ton of creativity on offense (and in general), and all of it designed to avoid that one scenario that everyone suspected would hurt the Pats: Brissett being asked to throw the ball 30+ times. He only attempted 19 passes, and none were that dangerous (he did almost get picked off once). BB & Co couldn't have drawn up a better gameplan for what they had to work with. NJDevs4978
Please let's see Julian Edelman at QB next week. They'll beat the bickering Bills anyway, but it would still be hilarious as hell. Garropolo is probably back next week though.
Colorado Rockies 1976
Damn. Looks like the Pats will have to sign SOMEONE to have around for Week 4. A shoulder-gimpy, could-leave-the-game-on-any-play Garoppolo and Edelman aren't going to be enough. It will be VERY damning on the Ryans if they can't find a way to shut down that offense...there's a very good chance that someone off the street will be playing the majority of the game behind center...of course, the Bills offense is so iffy at this point that who knows if they'll be able to score enough points to win. FWIW, ESPN's Ian Rapoport reporting that Brissett's injury is not considered to be serious. NJDevs4978
I was going to say Ryan Mallett would be a possibility since he knows the system but what he pulled in Houston last year probably got him blackballed given his limited production when he did play. I didn't either, lol (I had to look it up)...looks like Mallett has pretty much relegated himself to permanent backup status as an NFLer though...he probably never gets another shot to start somewhere unless a lot of teams see their #1 QBs go down. Hard to believe he's already 28. He definitely never looked good in any of his preseason action as a Patriot...he wasn't worth much by the time they moved him (drafted him in the 3rd round and later dealt him for a 6th). '7'
We goof about it...but you know N.E. will beat Buffalo next week. When it's 28-6 Patriots late in the 3rd, it would not shock me to see Belichick rub salt into the wound by having Edelman run the offense. (granted Rex has pulled out some weird wins over Belichick, remember when Geno was our starter and that Nick Folk kick after the "pushing into the pile" penalty gave the Jets a 40 yard FG instead of a 55 yard one to win it) but it ain't happening this week. Buffalo doesn't have the talent and while teams always play hard for Rex, they're not as well coached, smart, or talented as New England. It's already over for the Ryans. I'm sure internally they're already reaching out to prospective candidates clandestinely. I think back to the Marrone boondoggle. He had them going in the right direction at 9-7 then chickened out. I don't know exactly what went on behind the scenes there but if they smoothed things over with Marrone the Bills would be in a much better place right now. Colorado Rockies 1976
Oh well...gotta be happy with 3-1 and first place in the AFC East. Would've been nice for NE's D to come up with an effort like last week's, but that unit will only do so much, and they would've needed to force a bunch of turnovers for NE to have a legit chance to win. And Brissett just isn't ready yet...clearly very raw and who knows how his thumb is affecting him. And now Puppet's D not making key tackles. Just not their day. '7'
NFL Blames 'Confluence of Events' for Ratings DeclinesRead more: http://www.nasdaq.com/article/nfl-blames-confluence-of-events-for-ratings-declines-20161007-00275#ixzz4MQuypAKv Quote The National Football League has sent a memo to team owners seeking to ease concerns about the ratings decline that has hit football this fall. Through the first four weeks of the season, NFL viewership has declined 11%, and among the crucial adults 18-49 demographic that advertisers covet, ratings are down 12%. "While our partners, like us, would have liked to see higher ratings, they remain confident in the NFL and unconcerned about a long-term issue," the letter from NFL senior executives Brian Rolapp and Howard Katz said, adding that over the last 15 years, ratings viewership has grown 27% and that football "continues to be far and away the most powerful programming on television and the best place for brands and advertisers." Read more: http://www.nasdaq.com/article/nfl-blames-confluence-of-events-for-ratings-declines-20161007-00275#ixzz4MQv3btT9 Ultimately they'll be fine...but a few things they have to nip in the bud. The Kapernick thing needs to go away yesterday but it's festered for too long. I have no clue how to make it go away as you have smattering of players on several franchises doing it now. The league can mandate all that are able to stand...stand. But they would also take incredible heat for being authoritarian. Another potential solution is to have the players take the field after the National Anthem. Once again the league is unbalanced in terms of offense vs. defense and too flag happy especially with PI. I also think that the fanbases are sick of the constant gimmicks and promotions and Thursday Night Football Color Rush stupidity that just reeks of amateurish stunts. In the offseason I can see them loosening up CB's and letting them be slightly more grabby and physical, but that's it. Still won't be allowed to hit a QB or receiver down the middle. You're hearing TV ratings are down as much as 20%.. and I really don't want to listen to the apologists blame it all on the Election either. There was no debate this past Monday, and the ratings were in the toilet. And it isn't just TV ratings that are down for the NFL.. merchandise and attendance have also been down the past 3 years. The NFL has taken a giant hit in the public eye with the whole CTE thing, and the Concussion movie. But I think what's really hurt the league is the lack of parody. Parody is what made the NFL take off during the early 2000's. Now week-in week-out, fans can set their watch to which teams are going to lose, and which teams are going to win. Baseball went through this exact same thing a little over ten years ago during the Yankees\Cardinals\RedSox dominance, and you can see the same is happening to the NFL. If you look at the landscape of the Superbowl over the last 10 years or so.. 2004 & 2005 Patriots.. 2006: Pittsburgh vs Seattle.. 2008: Giants vs Patriots.. 2009: Pittsburgh wins again.. 2011: Pittsburgh's in the Superbowl again.. 2012; Giants vs Patriots.. 2014: Seattle\Denver.. 2015: Patriots\Seattle.. 2016: Denver again. It's been really great if you're a fan of the Steelers, Broncos, Seahawks, Giants or Patriots the last 10 years.. but the problem is, there are 27 other franchises. If you look at the previous 10 years of the NFL from 1994-2004, you'll see Superbowl appearances by San Diego, Buffalo, Dallas, SF, Green Bay, Atlanta, NE, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Denver, St. Louis, Oakland, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, NY, Philadelphia, Carolina, etc. That type of parody's gone. You take this season for example.. the Patriots don't have either Brady or Gronk for 4 games, and they're still 4-1. Meanwhile the rest of the AFC East is garbage, just like it's been for the last 10 years. It's like.. why even watch anymore if you're a Jets fan? Same in Detroit, or Chicago, or Miami, or Cleveland, etc. These are huge markets. Why even watch anymore? Colorado Rockies 1976
Beez, it's spelled "parity". A "parody" is a humorous take on an original idea...think Weird Al Yankovic's song parodies. But yeah, people will only tune in to root against the teams they're sick of seeing in the big games so many times. Dynasties are great for the fans of the teams enjoying one, and lousy for everyone else...especially if any given successful team is playing a style that isn't universally appealing (read: heavy on defense/dirty work). That being said, some of these teams can't get out of the gutter because they're forever badly run. Perennial incompetence from the top on down is very difficult to overcome, and some franchises can't ever seem to figure things out or learn from their mistakes.
