The Defense Thread

As October 13th nears, there is quite a logjam on D. Locks:

Greene-Severson

x-Lovejoy

x-x

There are 4 spots (1 reserve) for Merrill, Moore, Quincey, Santini, Auvitu and Gormley

Merrill is capable of playing the right side, but all of those players, sans Santini are lefties. Will be really interesting to see how this shakes out over the next week or so.

I'm thinking Merrill gets the spot on the right side, I think he has had a pretty good camp so far. If Auvitu continues how he is playing I don't see him anywhere but on the big team. The final leftie spot probably goes to Moore with Quincey being the extra man. I think Santini goes to the AHL and gets called up when someone goes down with an injury. I really haven't seen anything from Gormley so I don't have an opinion of him. Also, bold prediction, Auvitu and Merrill find good chemistry together and force Lovejoy to anchor the third pairing.

It's so hard to say right now - Auvitu is playing very well but his waiver clock starts with game 1.  I don't think he's the kind of guy who'll get claimed if they send him down but you want to be sure.  Also, you forgot Helgeson who is still in the mix somewhere.

Auvitu was apparently was extremely sought after by many teams back in May. It's hard to imagine him first not making the team and then clearing wavers

I think I was unclear - Auvitu would be ineligible to be claimed on waivers if he were sent down right now.  That ends once he plays one game in the NHL.

I do think that if he is sent down at some point after playing that first game, even teams who were interested in him might pass on him for various reasons (he carries an above-minimum cap hit, they didn't get to put him in an NHL training camp, they don't have room on their roster without waiving someone, etc)

Ok, makes sense - seems like he's making the strongest push compared to others to make the team with his play (5 assists, PP potential)

Part of me will listen to everything logical,  about his contract, his adaptation to NHL level and rink etc.. Etc..

But most part of me doesn't care a little bit about all that : I want Auvitu in the Big Team!

And yes. I'm biased. Sue me : )
