More Vegas time is not likely to make much difference as to his major league future...as it is, it looks like his future as a Met will be as a reliever, though God knows it won't come as any shock if injuries to the current rotation open up a spot for him. I think the organization is really getting frustrated with Matz at this point. Looks like the guy simply isn't physically able to being able to get through a major-league season. But by all means "braintrusts", keep forcing these innings limits that are making NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER on these young arms. Keep holding them to less than six innings per start in the minors. All the babying in the world hasn't done a thing. There really is no exact science to it. You have out of shape 40+ year olds who have seemingly rubber arms and can pitch forever, you have all the talent in the world kids who would make Chris Chandler look like an ironman. Everybody's anatomy is different. Everybody's pain tolerance is different. You just can't apply the same principles across the board to a staff. What might help one persons career may ruin somebody elses.
NJDevs4978
And apparently Matz is out for a long time, not even throwing for three weeks so at best it's a month plus. Wheeler makes the rotation as the #4, Montero and Lugo to the pen.
'7'
Bet it'll be the ASB by the time we see Matz again. This is following the usual Mets injury debacle storyline
NJDevs4978
As annoying as the Matz situation is I am actually a bit excited over Wheeler finally pitching, I may try to go to that game just cause though April night games can be annoying. I'd actually prefer that Wheeler stay in extended spring warm weather, with Lugo getting that open rotation spot to start the year. In Wheeler's case, I would understand a little more caution. Yeah it's not ideal having him pitch in the cold but the poor guy hasn't pitched in so long I think mentally and emotionally they just want to get him over the hump asap. Plus if he only has x number of innings what's the sense in going through more of them in Florida?

Wheeler games can be a root canal too. Very John Maine-ish as he carries 90-100 pitches into the 4th. Though there is no way they'll let him exert himself that much this year. Any Wheeler game you have to figure you'll see the pen in the 5th or earlier I still remember that game which feels like 30 years ago against Florida where he basically made them look like little leaguers for 9 innings and shut them out 1-0. The movement he had on his pitches you'd think he was scuffing the ball. Total domination

Wheeler in his early career often makes things harder on himself than they need to be. He's usually approaching 100 pitches before the end of the sixth. I'm not sure that he'll ever get that part of his game solved. Losing two years of development was a real killer in that department.
NJDevs4978
Apparently Seth Lugo was a WBC casualty, complaining of arm fatigue and getting a DL stint. Montero makes the big club to start the season as the pen long man. MRI found nothing at least, but Lugo did pitch more innings in the WBC (and much higher leverage ones) than any Met pitcher in the entirety of Spring Training so fatigue doesn't surprise me. Anyway, offseason's finally over so might as well start the actual season thread. Edited April 1, 2017 by NJDevs4978
