Bondra was one of the most underrated pure goal scorers ever. Dead puck era no less.

That 1998 Capitals team was thin on secondary scoring throughout the season but that stepped up in the postseason. And Kolzig became a brick wall. That's all it took.

Bondra was a 8th round pick too (156th overall)...man was that a steal.

re:  Ovechkin...they were ripping him pretty good on the NHL network...and based on the clips that they played of Ovechkin cruising on both of goals that the Caps allowed, I can see why.  The guy should finish his career with at least 700 goals (of the top 100 goal-scorers of all time, the only three guys ahead of him in goals-per-game average are Mike Bossy (0.762), Mario Lemieux (0.754) and Pavel Bure (0.623)...Ovechkin is at currently at 0.609...Gretzky finished at 0.601, for reference)...and Ovechkin is doing this in Dead Puck.  But it really feels like his rep took its biggest hit yet with last night's loss...there's going to be a lot of "yeah, buts" now unless both he and his team find a way to get to a SCF.

Ovi will go down as the best player in NHL history to never win the cup.  Dionne must have a sh!t-eating grin today knowing that the end of him being known as that guy will soon end.

Some teams just find a way to lose, year after year.  Washington and St. Louis are right at the top of that list.  At least the Caps made it interesting in their annual second round elimination by forcing a game 7, but to get shut out at home after coming back from 3-1 down to force the decisive game is embarrassing.

And everything that Slava ranted about seems dead on to me.  Ovi is all about Ovi, and the Caps owner and management have let it be that way, and even have encouraged it, from the beginning.  There is no accountability there, and that team suffers because of it.  It is basically the exact opposite of everything the Devils were under Lou.

Bingo and it seems like JVB wanted something similar to what the Caps had when he rammed Kovy down Lou's throat in 2010.  This is why even though I don't care for that Russian merc, at least he saved us from suffering the same fate.

I will gladly take 9 years of sucking followed by 1 Cup season over 10 years of making the playoffs while winning President Trophies but never getting past the second round.

Thing about that is I can't think of a team that was terrible for an extended period of time and then all of the sudden won the Cup, maybe Carolina?   While President Trophy winners have had a rough go of it for a while, you win the Presidents Trophy by being a really really good team.  If there was a formula for turning that into teams that more consistently win the Cup, I think it would have been discovered and universally applied by now.

Look, I have no idea whether the whispers about Ovechkin now are true or, if true, they're significant in any way.    But he's still an outstanding player that does the most important thing in the game very well, which is score goals.  So if I'm another team, and the Caps want to sell low on him, I'd be all over it.

The thing is, this isn't by any means the norm. There has only been 1 team in the NHL since the invention of the Presidents Trophy to have 3 Presidents Trophies and 0 Stanley Cups. The Ovechkins.

Canucks have come the closest with 2 Presidents' Trophies (back to back) without a cup.  However, at least they made it to the finals one year.  Ovechkin and company can't even escape from the second round.

Yeah I've gotta say I'm really not that hyped for these two series.

I think the Penguins will steam roll the Senators, unless they get supremely lucky again.

Out West, the games are on too late for me now with my damn work schedule, but I hope the Preds advance.  But I could see the Ducks just cruising through.

I find it hard to buy that either of those things (but I've already mentioned Ottawa). Anaheim hasn't been able to do much in the postseason since their cup 10 years ago, despite regularly dominating the regular season. They just broke a stretch of losing 5 consecutive game 7s at home. I'm glad they got by Edmonton, but honestly very surprised. If anyone runs away with that series, I'd imagine it'll be Nashville.

Let's fvcking go Nashville! Love Like the team [went a little overboard on the original post there], love the way they play, great goalie, great players, but no true "superstar" unless you count Subban or to a lesser degree Forsberg, reminds me of us in the 00's.

Plus the city is a freaking blast. Every bar the Mrs and I went to we felt welcomed, talked hockey at mostly all of them, even got some pointers on my own brewing from an owner of one of the breweries there on a personal tour.

I was just going to say the same thing.  Don't understand the "Peter fvcking Bondra" quote at all.  Dude was fvcking awesome, and probably a little underrated like you said, though definitely not be me.  I always liked his game.  He was pretty fast, and had a really hard shot too.

For real... People get on the Devils about attendance but I think we looked better than that most playoffs. Then again its been a long time and its hard to remember.

There were a few empty seats scattered against Florida and Philly as my memory serves, but nothing like this. And this is the conference finals.

Not like people work for a living or anything.  Could you imagine a NY/NJ or D.C. Metro area game starting at 6pm?  There'd be 100 people in the building.  I'd be furious if I was a season ticket holder in Anaheim with the early start.  Tone deaf NHL.. but anything to bend over for the tv network.
