I'm thrilled there are no more 7:30pm games on Friday nights. Also only 1 set of back to back home games thankfully cause that was the worst last year. Not a single afternoon home game either which is strange cause I thought they were well attended last year. That seems to be the biggest change from last year home game wise. I may try to get out to Vegas for the game as well.

Damn, we only come to Tampa once this year.  Needless to say, I'll definitely be going to that one.  We also always seem to play on my birthday, which I love.  Here's hoping we get a win on it this year.  It's on the road against Carolina, and on a Friday... who knows, maybe I'll even take the drive up there for that one.  Would be pretty cool road trip.

I found it interesting that the Devils have zero Friday night home games in the 2018 portion of the schedule.

I probably will try to make it to one of the home games on that weekend in late October (vs Ottawa, vs Arizona, more likely the former), possibly the Flyers game in Philadelphia in mid-January, and possibly the Carolina road game in early March (have been wanting to take the road trip to Raleigh for a game, but I may try to visit the parents that weekend instead), in addition to the two games in DC against the Capitals (one of which is the season finale and both of which are on a weekend).

Just out of curiosity, why is the 1/2 hour difference a big deal?

It is odd they do not have any afternoon games.  You would think a team drawing mainly from suburbs would want as many weekend afternoon games as they can get.  But, it could be a new strategy.  Don't target the families and little kids, target the 20-33ish crowd?

It's just not good for rivalries, for building that hatred and passion - to only play the Rangers 4 times a year. There really needs to be more rivalry games. At least 6 if not 8.

Agreed.  My favorite schedule matrix was the first 3 years after the 05 lockout.  8 games against your division teams and only 10 against the Western Conference.  When they went to 6 I thought it was still ok.  I was all for 4 divisions and divisional play-offs, but hate they only play division teams 4 times and 5 times against 2.

My suggestion is to skip the Isles game.  Montreal is a great place to visit.  6-6 1/2 hour drive from Newark, not sure on train.  Head-up to Montreal on March 30th, spend a few days there, head back to Newark on 4/2 or early 4/3.  On the Canadiens board on HF, they have a great thread about information on the city.  I have been there a few times, great place.  If you don't mind the driving, you can even take a trip out to Quebec City, about 2 hours each way from Montreal.  Vieux Quebec is really cool and the Remparts have a great atmosphere if they are still playing.

Edit: I'd also skip the Toronto game, and head down to DC.  Cool stuff to see if you have any interest in history.  Could also make a trip to Colonial Williamsburgh.

I would rather just get home earlier, it's a bigger deal for people who take the trains because that 30 min difference means they could have a long wait for some of the trains. I assume that some of the season ticket holder base that takes the trains complained because there were season ticket holders around me who would leave a bit early so they didn't have to wait forever for the next trains.

I hate afternoon games as well but I thought they sold very well last year so that surprises me as well that there isn't any.

As much as I'd hate to admit it, M32 is totally right.  Spend the extra time in Montreal, it's an incredible city.  My friends and I try to get up there every year for hockey games, tournaments, festivals, concerts, whatever.  Threw a few bachelor parties up there too, so let me know if you're not going with a wife or girlfriend and I can point you in the right direction..

I would agree with this 100%.  You are already going to a ton of games over a very short period of time.  Skip 1 and enjoy Montreal.  It's a great city and awesome hockey atmosphere.  That is 1 stop I would definitely do whatever I could to make on this epic trip you are planning.  Tickets won't be cheap, but it's worth it.

I have no problem with them ditching the 7:30 Friday games, although that never bothered me personally.  I don't like the fact that there are no afternoon weekend games.  I always liked them, and thought they were better attended (usually with a larger % of kids) than the night games.

Makes sense.  I originally hated when the Rangers switched from mostly 7:30 starts to 7's.  Same reason, train.   I lived on LI, took the LIRR.  For a 7:30 game, I would drive to Freeport, because after the game I could catch the 10:28 express to Freeport.  To go from Merrick or Bellmore had to wait til the 10:39 and it was a local.  After 7pm starts, they didn't have any express trains around 10ish.  The trip in was even worse.  For 7:30 games, would take a ~6pm in.  Gave me plenty of time to grab some food before heading in.  However, they didn't have any 5:30's heading in.  They would make the drop offs, and run them back to Penn without passengers.  So, for a 7pm start, if I took a train at 6, didn't have time to eat and was rushing to my seats.  If I took the 5, felt I had TOO much time to kill beforehand.  Now that I drive in and wake up at 5:30 for work, I like the earlier.

The lack of afternoon games, to me whose game companion is a 10 year old, is annoying. But, the older she gets, its not really an issue.

I greatly prefer the 7:00 game start because when watching from home, I always DVR the game to skip the commercials and intermissions. 7:00 game is over before 10:00, thus avoiding potential DVR conflict, because there's always a lot of shows recording at that time.

Plus, I like to go straight from work, pick up my daughter at home, and go straight there. 7:00 works perfectly for that. If I did that for a 7:30 start, I would arrive way too early, and being early anywhere with a 10 year old is exhausting, because they hate waiting for anything!

I'll third this- Montreal is a great city. Saw a Devs-Habs game up there back in 2008, the atmosphere is off the charts. You have to put a game in Montreal on your bucket list if you haven't seen one already.

Thanks everyone for the comments.
I have friends moving to Montreal in 3 weeks (Aussie married a Canadian) so accommodation is taken care of. They also have friends who have season tickets so might be able to score tickets that way too.

If it's only 6-6 1/2 hours drive compared to the longer train, I'd probably do that for the few days, and come back for the big Rangers game.

I have plenty of time to work out what I'm doing :D
