eldon
I'm psyched about tonite. Just the fact that the experts are split on Nico/Nolan tells us there is no clear cut bad choice. I want the more skilled shooter. If that's Nico, then I want him. Other skill sets seem pretty even. Either way NJD is in the spotlight. Colorado Rockies 1976
Did anyone here know that Nolan Patrick was James Patrick's nephew? I didn't, until just now. I remember James very well from his NY Ranger days (he played 1280 regular season games as a defenseman in the NHL...no small feat)...just never made the link...I knew Nolan's dad had played too (with James as a teammate for a couple of years, with the Rangers, after some time with the Sabres), but I never realized that they were all related (well, Steve and James, yeah, but not to Nolan). Over 1500 NHL regular season games played for Dad and Uncle...good deal. Fairly high picks too, both of them...Steve went 20th overall in 1980, and James went 9th overall in 1981. I also didn't see any of that mentioned here previously (could've just missed it). I like reading about prospects, but I can only do so much of it prior to them actually becoming part of the organization.
Derlique
I'm out to lunch with co-workers and one of them has a son named Cale. I can't describe the amount I hate that kid due to Makar

On top of his father and uncle playing in the NHL, his grandfather played in the CFL and his mother was a top volleyball player who played on the Canadian National Team. But when the entire hockey world thinks it's either Nico or Nolan, taking someone who isn't Nico/Nolan without trading down is stupid. Even if Makar turns out fantastic and they bust -- there needs to be a trade down if you truly believe that Makar is going to be a better player than Nico and Nolan. Well it should be duh, but my post was a pre-cursor to all of the psychos on this board who are going to threaten to burn down the Prudential Center because Shero made the single worst decision in the history of hockey, without even knowing whether Nolan or Nico will ever pan out in the NHL. Agreed that if he's taking Makar, the idea would be to trade down to get him. But even if that doesn't happen, Nolan plays 40 games a year due to injuries, Nico never has another good season, and Makar wins the Calder trophy and three Stanley Cups as a Devil, I would forgive Shero for not trading down two picks.

It'd be a gutsy move and when you make a gutsy move you don't have the benefit of the doubt when it doesn't work out. GMs love teh benefit of the doubt as it gives them job security. But I am guessing there's plenty of examples where the guy expected to be picked 3rd- 5th winds up being a better player than #1-2. Just saying that to characterize not picking one of those two guys as the worst possible thing that could happen may not be entirely true. That said, my draft strategy is now and has always been, pick the best guy available, and hope that means he'll succeed. dmann422
Does anyone have an estimated time that the pick will actually be made? I figure there'll be some fluff to start before the actual pick, anyone recall how delayed it's been in past years??

Anyone gonna argue that using the #1 on Gartner or Bourque would have been a horrible decision and the biggest mistake in franchise history? In all likelihood, Makar is not playing in the NHL for at least two years from October, and probably closer to 3 years. Add to the fact that he's a defenseman who's not that big and has holes in his game, you're looking at a long time before he provides an impact at the NHL level if he ever does. Even Victor Hedman, who Makar truly is not, took time to become effective. It's funny, we just saw Anthony Deangelo get traded for the second time in a short career, and his value keeps declining and declining where he's a borderline reclamation project at this point. Yeah, De'Angelo has legitimate character issues, but he essentially has the same toolbox as Makar and put up almost the same offensive numbers but played in a much much better league. Or we could remember Ryan Murphy. People keep making the same mistake of seeing a defensive prospect with a lot of flaws and making the comparison to Erik Karlsson. Hopefully the Devils don't overthink this.

I don't think it's a mistake to select Makar if that's who we think is best... but I think it's a mistake wasting the pick value if we could trade down to 3-5 and get additional assets + Makar. I believe that's the argument most people agree with. Debating the merit of the pick is a different story.
