Good example of what I was talking about above. Who would you rather pick in 1979, #1 Rob Ramage, #4 Mike Gartner, or #8 Ray Bourque?

Anyone gonna argue that using the #1 on Gartner or Bourque would have been a horrible decision and the biggest mistake in franchise history?

I wonder if Ramage was the undisputed consensus #1 pick that season, or if that was Colorado botching the pick?  I do know from what I've seen that he was expected to go high in that draft...just not sure if it was #1 overall high.

You and I were 2-3 years old at the time. I don't know about you but I wasn't following the draft rankings until at least 4 or 5.

Heh heh, good one.

Actually (and quite sadly) I was nine...born 6/24/1970, will be 47 as of tomorrow...or as I see it, 50 - 3.  Dammit.

Well Happy Birthday! I guess I assumed from your screen name. I didn't consider you might just have been a huge fan of the Bicentennial.

I don't think it's a mistake to select Makar if that's who we think is best...  but I think it's a mistake wasting the pick value if we could trade down to 3-5 and get additional assets + Makar.      I believe that's the argument most people agree with.    Debating the merit of the pick is a different story.

He could theoretically win the Norris trophy some day, in the same way that Jish McDaniels (someone who knows a thing or two about football) thought he could turn Tim Tebow into a real NFL quarterback even though virtually everyone said he was only worth selecting in the fourth round as a project pick.

Everything about Makar's biography screams that selecting him at number 1 is an enormous gamble with less upside than people think.  And unless we get a gross overpayment for the pick to move down so we can take him, he's still a gamble that is not worth taking.

I do like this "gross overpayment" philosophy...

I assume some kid named Gretzky was the consensus #1 pick...  but of course, we got screwed there too (like the 84 draft where the Pens tanked and we missed him by 3 points).

Rob Rammage was the #2 prospect according to the Hockey News from 1979 for those born in 1959--- so I don't think it was a reach:

Well this is interesting:

http://www.crossingbroad.com/2017/06/the-flyers-might-be-concerned-about-nolan-patrick.html

Quote

A little birdie tells me that the Flyers are “extremely concerned” about Patrick’s injury history and really want Nico to fall to them at number two. No one knows what the Devils are going to do, but recent reports have them taking Nico. That possibility might have led to the loosely-sourced report that the Flyers could trade back and send the number two pick to Vegas in exchange for what could perhaps be a slew of draft picks Vegas obtains through expansion draft agreements to avoid certain unprotected players. There also seems to be some late conjecture that the Devils could trade back and take a defenseman, or just take one outright, leaving the Flyers to choose between Nolan or Nico (I think they’d take Nico).

Anyway, if the Devils stay put and take Nico, the Flyers should take Patrick, and they probably will, even if they do have concerns about his injuries. Anything else would be overthinking it. DON’T DO THAT, RON.

In case you’re wondering, the little birdie is the same person who told me the Flyers were hiring Dave Hakstol two days before anyone in Philly had ever even heard his name.

Theory: Shero’s plan is to subtly let it be believed that the Devils are choosing Nico, who the Flyers are known to be targeting. Flyers will want to move up to take Nico, so Shero will make a trade of 1st overall +++ for 2nd overall and Provorov. Devils then select Nolan, and have a reunion of the Brandon team that won the WHL championship in 2016 (Provorov, Patrick, Quenneville).

Likelihood: ~0%

It's not entirely unrealistic, but it wouldn't be Provorov.  Sanheim and #2 for #1 would be pretty reasonable if Philly really wants Nico over Nolan and Shero doesn't have a clear preference.

If he went to the Rockies they may never move here.

NJ's most legendary hockey team would remain the Bulldogs (#1stripe)

But what if they knew we would think they were doing that, so they reversed the reverse psychology?!? TAKE MAKAR!!!

Or just make up a prospect nobody has heard of and make him a dark horse.

Devils are a lock to take Oliver Klozeroff from Belarus.

He's got a great toolbox and a lot of upside.  And he absolutely destroyed the Belarussan junior B league as a 16 and half year old.
