I agree that the Devils need puck moving D and have tons of cap space to sign him, but Shattenkirk isn't likely to put up those numbers with the Devils as the teams he was on last season are both appreciably better than the lineup we will ice in 2017-18.  He's a good defenseman, and is just what we need.  However, no matter who he signs with, people are going to expect him to be a #1 D who puts up big numbers based upon the term and value of his contract - and they likely will be disappointed as a result.

Agreed. Shattenkirk hasn't been on a team as mediocre as the Devils. I wouldn't expect him to be repeating his numbers immediately. That being said, it would be cool if we signed something big on July 1st. I can't remember the last time we made a big time signing during summer free agency and obviously I'm not talking about Schneider or Hall since those were trades.

Cammalleri was one of the better forwards available when we signed him. Ilya Kovalchuk was the single most highly touted UFA forward ever when we signed him. Volchenkov was the best defenseman available when we signed him. Rolston was the best forward available when we signed him.
you need a better memory.

Clowe too. He was supposed to be Clarkson's replacement. [emoji37]

Agreed. We've done ok in that respect. I suspect we'll land someone nice this year.

Hopefully it will be an easier sell with the likes of Hall and Hischier on the team now. If Cory can return to form I think they're only a couple pieces away from being competitive.

Seems like a lot of biased hatred of MDZ for no reason, if you ask me, or simply because he was a Rag once.  Video clips of him from 5 years ago when he was 21... let's look up Larsson turnovers while we're at it, or Shea Weber from the playoffs before he was traded for Subban (where he was legit terrible for long stretches).  Every D in the league has atrocious mind farts at times.  MDZ is no Larsson or Weber.  But he can put up points if given the chance, can hit, can skate, etc.  I'm not an advanced stats bible quoter, but I've never heard of him as being a terrible possession player.  I don't really understand the MDZ vitriol but it's all good.  We can all have our opinion.  We'll see what Shero does on July 1 to address the D.  But if Brendan Smith is re-upping in NY, and presumably I'd call us a long shot to land Shattenkirk, MDZ is a lot better option than people like Roman Polak or another miscellaneous pylon.  It's all about contract-to actual value ratio.  Offering a guy like MDZ 5 mill a year is bad value.  Definitely don't do it.  But if he's fallen from grace or out of the top 6 in Phili, offering him a million per for 2 years would be excellent value.  Most players in the NHL can add something to a team of priced correctly.

my dislike for the player is based on living in south jersey and seeing him ass up the ice in many of the flyers games.  He should stick to stalking porn stars on twitter and instagram.  I think it's a huge stretch to use MDZ and hitting in the same sentence.  He's sodt always has been always will be.  We have enough soft players already we don't need another one who is a fringe NHL player.

Is there anything to substantiate Henrique getting traded?  I mean, any rumors or sources beyond people here that just have that "feeling" ?   I don't think it makes much sense either, unless we're blow away by an offer.  I also don't see Thornton coming here.  I don't know that he'd want to, and I just don't think he's a good fit.

I'm thrilled to hear Bennett has become a UFA, and I hope it stays that way.  Let someone else sign him.

As for who else we might go after...I wouldn't mind taking a shot at attempting to sign any of these guys:  Radulov, Kulikov, Stone, Franson, Alzner. and of course Shattenkirk.

I would love to see Kulikov and Stone here, absolutely. I've  always been high on Kulikov. Franson and Alzner, no thank you.

I'd pass on both. Stone has done well with good partners but craters without them. Kulikov is a bit better but what he gives you in shot suppression (not that much) he takes away by killing your offense.

I've always liked Kulikov.  He'd probably be my first choice.  Guy doesn't put up a ton of points, but is a pretty big body and pretty reliable defender.

I feel like Severson, and even an aging Greene, are good enough puck movers and skaters to make up for having a stay at home defenseman back there.   If we were to add Shattenkirk as well, then we're golden.

Lol - I'd never heard this story - but just looked it up.  MDZ seems like a real scumbag IRL.  Doesn't change my opinion that many players on the right contract can add value, but yeah, seems like a d-bag.

Hypothetical question for you guys from reddit..

If you were Shero, would you consider an offer sheet for Draisaitl at 9.8M?  Compensation we'd owe Edmonton would be two 1st round picks, a 2nd and 3rd.

The 9.8M figure stands out because at $9,814,935 compensation jumps to four 1st round picks.

It'll never happen, obviously, but it's a fun thought experiment.  If McDavid gets his rumored 13.25M/8 year deal then the Oilers would be royally fvcked if they were forced to match a 9.8M/7 year deal for Draisaitl.

a: The Oilers would match in 4 seconds

b: I would not trade those picks with how our roster looks on 06/29/2017. If we sign Shattenkirk, maybe. Mayyyybe.

c: I would hate to have the Oilers immediately match and then Shero burns a bridge with one of the more trigger-happy GMs in hockey.

I agree with all of these points.

They are good enough puckmovers to help NJ in the 18-ish minutes they themselves play. The issue is the remaining 30-odd even strength minutes and the guys listed are not the solution to that. Those players will be more of the same.

I know Calvin de Haan is not a UFA but do the Devils have enough to trade for de Haan.  I heard he wants 5 million not sure the Islanders want to pay him that much

Da Haan=5 mil?  I don't think so.

He had 42 points last year. He's not completely and totally useless. I'd love to have him back to play a limited role, sorta like Shanahan in 2009.

Yeah, honestly with the youth movement going on, arguably his veteran presence would be more useful now than it was the last time.
