All-time Devils Roster Construction Challenge

Recommended Posts

I'll note first that I stole this idea from HF Boards, so it's not something I came up with.  Still, I thought it was a fun idea that can help tide the board over for the summer.

The challenge is to construct the best all-time Devils roster (4 forward lines, 3 defense pairings, 2 goalies) you can, subject to the following rules:

(1) You only get one player that wore a particular number on your roster.  So, for example, if you choose Zach Parise, you cannot have Kirk Muller.  Theoretically, you could choose Gomez in 2014-15 when he wore 21 if you really wanted Bruce Driver on your defense, but you're getting 2014-15 Gomez and not 2005-06 Gomez.  (See below for further explanation).

(2)  You only get to choose one player from a particular season, and for purposes of your roster the player for that season is who you are getting without regard to past or future career accomplishments.  So, for example, you can choose Patrik Elias for the 2000-01 season, but that means you cannot choose Jason Arnott for that year, although you could choose Arnott for 1999-2000.  But, it essentially means that you cannot have Alexander Mogilny on your roster at all, since 2000-01 was his only full year with the team.  If you wanted to get Elias on your roster without having to sacrifice other good players from his prime years, you could theoretically choose Elias from the 2015-16 season, but that's the version of Elias you're getting.

I haven't done mine yet, but, believe me, it's more challenging than you probably think.

To be fair, I didn't try to make actual lines (was not concerned about forward position). That, indeed, would make it harder. Although I could put Zajac's 09-10 in there and use rafalski's 02-03 season and dump jagr or lemieux.

Dayum. Really blows your mind thinking about some of the all-time greats who have worn this jersey. We were so spoiled for so long, we sometimes tend to forget how truly special some of these teams were.

i just said that recently when andreychuk got into the hall. its easy to get devil-centric with some of the lifers like marty stevens neids etc  but when u step back, theres been some of the best that stoped in the swamps. even if it was only for a cup of coffee

Especially when CommonDreads didn't even have 2000-01 Mogilny on his team.

Devils did have their share of some nice names, though some of them were obviously past their primes...I remember when Gilmour was acquired one season after Andreychuk, and getting all excited about what they might do once reunited...but I don't even think they played together all that much.  They only combined for 27 goals in their only full season together on the Devils roster.

Fetisov never gets enough love imo. Nor does Stastny. Some of our younger fans also forget Guerin. I saw a guy get flamed pretty bad @ allaboutthejersey for not even knowing he started his career in NJ. Killer\Housley & Niewendyk were two of the bigger trades I remember getting very excited for. (and obviously, Vanbiesbrouck)

I tell ya a guy that gets forgotten.. Carol Vadnais in ‘82, at the twilight of his career. Vadnais was one of the greatest defensemen of the 70’s, who got robbed a couple Norris trophies, during an era when no one other than Orr won them. He was a 6x All-Star, won a World Championship, 2 Stanley Cups. Great player. Rest in Peace.

Wanted to put 2001 Mogilny but, you gotta have the A-Line, right? ;) But yeah, it's a pretty impressive list of players that have come through here over the past 34 years, even guys I didn't have listed like Shanahan, Guerin, Andreychuk, Sundstrom, Stastny, Broten, Nieuwendyk, we've been pretty lucky to see these guys all things considered.
