Anyone who has an issue with this should take a look at Parenteau, P.A. and Stempniak, Lee.

Looking forward to the days of no more "treading water/inexpensive/potential flip-for-picks"-type signings like these that remind us all of the state of the team, but yeah, right now it makes sense.  Shero can get some games out of him and flip him for a mid-to-low round pick at the deadline (or earlier).

How can you not like the signing? We gave up nothing for a "hmm, maybe". If it doesn't pan out, he's gone. If it does pan out, he's traded for a mid-round pick.

Because there's better players available, and Stafford did not have a good season last year and was never that good of a player to begin with and he turns 32 this year - what he did well in his prime is not really something the Devils need more of.  So I don't like the process.  It might turn out okay - playing on PP1 and if he plays with Hall, he might score 15-20 goals by March which would probably get us that 2nd or 3rd round pick back - but this could easily explode and Stafford's last NHL team could be the Devils.

I'm cool with it. Not sure Speers will be ready and we need a rw regardless. As far as him not being able to get a good return- I feel like he's a more sought after than PAP

If the Devils get more a 4th-rounder for him, I'll be surprised...probably a 5th or 6th, based on recent play.  He was pretty good in his first six NHL seasons, but it's been a different story over his last five...not like he's played on awesome teams of course.  Does say a lot that he was available in late August for pennies.

MITB pretty much summed it up...at his salary, if he blows after 20 games or so, you say the hell with it and move on.  If he's decent and contributing, might as well let him stick around for a while at minimal cost, then get your pick or two at the deadline and call it a day.

I mean you aren't going to get much for Stafford;  the Jets got a 6th rounder for him (was potentially a 4th if he played enough games for the Bruins (he did) and they got to the 2nd round (they didn't)...    so 2 wins why of a 4th rounder (in a very competitive, OT laden series against Ottawa)

But I like having Stafford on the team for next year to give us some more time to season...  if we can flip him later; sure... but I'm not thinking it'll be for a 2nd.   If he somehow pots 20; and we aren't in the playoff hunt (which would be feasible if he's netting 20); then maybe we can snag a 3rd from some desperate playoff team with an injured RWer.   But I expect more of the same 4/5/6 rounder.

Stafford is worse than Parenteau or Stempniak, but he should at least get a few goals hanging out in the slot on PP1.  I don't like the signing and I don't think he will bring back much at the deadline unless they play him a lot with Hall.

He's a RW and it's one year for $800,000. There is literally nothing not to like.

I just explained what I don't like about it.

Yes I saw your post- that's fine, you aren't wrong about what you said, and there may be some better options out there (I.E. Jagr). But anyone you sign this time of year is likely a marginal player to begin with, and it fills a need at RW, so I'm good with it.

2017/18 Michael Ryder.

Sure if you ignore that ryder was signed at 2 yrs $7 mill. But I get what your saying, I doubt this move works out- I predict he won't have any takers at the deadline and is a healthy scratch by the end of season.

I agree, but also think it doesn't matter. Worth a shot to see if he can return to form. In his last full-ish season he was 21g-17a-38p. I'd take that from a 3rd-4th liner.
