He could be feeling the same emotions as Henrique...I think that first time being traded from the team that drafted them affects some of these guys, as we saw with Hall.  But most get over it.

I was in full WTF?! mode when that deal was made...to me, all I could think was "Why is Lou killing the A-line so quickly?"  They had become a complete nonentity on the road that season, but it still just didn't feel right to me at the time.

Yea, of course. I've watched some other interviews with him at this point, and he seems to always have that tone, though. Could just be his Finnish genes.

I had the same reaction about the Arnott-McKay deal CR. I was PISSED about that one at first. Obviously it worked out in the end lol.

After losing Rico, least we have players coming in with Mojo coming back, and Palms recovering..... Added a Good D man in the deal.

Can sami win some faceoffs offs.. we're 44% in our D zone..5v5..  with 77% D zone starts for santini, that's a possession nightmare..  I don't think Steven is as bad as it sounds..  Greene is just as much to blame..  wonder what the pairs will be going forward

I was a kid. Arnott was my favorite player by far. I had 4 jerseys; all were Arnott. 2 red, 2 white. I had 3 devils posters in my room, all Arnott. I worshiped Arnott.

My dad and I were walking up to CAA before the game after the deadline. As a kid, I had no idea anything happened. Some guy in the parking lot told us about the trade. I thought he was kidding, until he wasn’t.

I threw up in the parking lot and asked my dad to take me home. It’s one of my vivid earlier memories (I was born in 92, so that puts me at about 10), and I’ll never forget it. Didn’t watch the Devils for a whole week after that. Silent protest.

Got a Langenbrunner jersey for Christmas next year.

This isn't a knock on anyone, but I could see Lou doing that more than I would see Shero doing it...I think Shero has a pretty specific vision in mind and I don't think Henrique quite fit.  I think if all goes according to plan, there won't be room for him by the time he goes UFA...don't think I'd ever want to overpay for Henrique anyway, which kind of goes hand-in-hand with UFA signings.

Not to mention if you re-sign MarJo where are you going to put Henrique?  The top six for the forseeable future would be some combination of Hall-Nico-Palm-MarJo-Zacha/Zajac-Bratt or even one of the kids who hasn't come up yet like McLeod.  They weren't going to give big money and years to a 2/3 line tweener when they have other needs.

I believe they played together in the WJC for the States in 2010. The team that won vs Canada in OT when, funny enough, Carlson scores the winner.

Yes, what a game, I did forget about that...however, I was really wondering how well they know each other. Sometimes in youth hockey, when the top players forge quite a disdain for each other while growing up, so I am just curious if it is a positive or a negative in regards to their possible relationship.

I guess when it is all said and done...the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ he is going to get can make that decision easier.

Don't know if MoJo gets re-signed...too early to tell.  But it all goes back to the same thing, as far as Henrique goes...one body that wasn't here for a big chunk of the season in Zajac came back, and two more in MoJo and Palms soon will.  Lots of forwards (and you still have Q down in the AHL) and a need for a defenseman.  You can also argue that Henrique's value might have never have been any higher than it is right now...he had that point surge to make his offensive numbers look more respectable, and he still has one more year after this one under cost control.  Anaheim was also somewhat desperate for a center.

Blender is what he is...I don't think he'll ever stick in the NHL on a contender, though I give him a shot to be a bad-team kind of player...a guy you try to make do with while you're transitioning through lean years.  He's already 23 years old and still hasn't stuck yet...but with Gibby doing what he has and Blender falling behind other guys, he just wasn't going to get another chance here.  It will be interesting to see if he gets one with Anaheim, or if he's eventually flipped again for something else.

Sounds like most of you are enamored with his good looks as opposed to his on ice production...which is an entire different story...

20-30 goal scorers don’t just grow on trees. People act like all he ever did was score 1 big goal against the Rags. He’s scored 20+ 3 times.

Oy getting in late here. In your heart, Henrique is the last player you want to see go. He seemed to love playing for the Devils. He's the player you envision playing out his whole career in NJ, the Canadian who falls in love with NJ and never leaves, and has kids here who grow up native New Jerseyans and he talks about the highways and diners like the average NJer. And NJ falls in love with him too. But he's the first player you trade if you're using your brain. And that's what Shero did. He absolutely has another level to reach and he's not going to get there in NJ with all the depth at forward. Anaheim needs scoring help and he's going to thrive there.

Henrique is an NJ hero forever and nothing is ever going to change that. Unless he signs with the Rangers one day.

we could always re-sign Henrique in 2 years if it's a good fit then
That would be a typical Lou move

This is great.  I wish it was Zajac instead and I'm sure he was offered up first but Henrique is the better player and younger.  Still love the deal.  He was being wasted down on the third line and producing zilch.  Now we can ditch Prout and stop wondering when Joe Joe Blando is coming up to destroy the league.  That's the big loss folks.  Blandisi may be the next great one.  A gamble worth taking though.

The Devils just got even better

I will say this; I'd trade Henrique-Larsson for Hall-Vatanen 150 times out of 100.

Amen.

If Rico wasn't a handsome social media darling with the most important goal in 10 years, everyone would be thrilled with this move. Henrique just hasn't been that good for years. He does not make any line he's on better and the Devils have too many forwards that can play top 6.

this trade makes terrific sense.

This 1000x. This is a great trade. We traded an expendable forward for a real d-man. Shero pulls of some seriously good trades.

Nothing about Blandisi suggests greatness.  He's already 23.  He's a pretty good AHLer (20 G and 42 A in 77 GP), for whatever that's worth, but I think he'll fall somewhere between NHL fringer and NHL bad-team filler.

Yah, he's probably good enough to have a real NHL career.

I also wonder if Quenneville came up in the discussions.  He's quietly performed very well for an age 20-21 player in the AHL.

I think this, as CR1976 said, was the crux of the trade. This trade represented that the Devils are choosing Quenneville over Blandisi. Which should be the choice with Q being younger and showing more promise.

I'm not a huge believer in Blandisi or Q tbh, but yeah, if I have to choose one or the other, it's Q every time for me, for exactly the reasons you stated.  I like that it was Blender who went and not Q.

Can any advanced metrics guys with a little time on their hands say what Sami's possession numbers were like the passed couple years? I know this year has been rough for him due to his partner and state of that team. Wondering how he did last year w possession.

This is what you want from players who get traded to your team. If they leave happily, they probably aren't the most loyal player in the world. There's no reason Vatanen should be in love with NJ yet. A player who likes where he is is a sign of a quality person and leader. Think Scott Stevens leaving the Blues.

One of the nice things about this trade is that you only have to wait 1 day to see the new acquisition.  As opposed to the whole summer.

I think players in Henrique's and Vatanen's position are always in a bit of a tough spot, in that they don't see a deal coming (not many of this magnitude are pulled off this early in the season), and weren't really looking to go elsewhere...but they quickly have to balance whatever negative emotions with sudden "Well this is a new opportunity for me, I'm excited, here we go!" bravado.  It's a unique challenge that a lot of fans don't take into account when these deals are done.

Stevens in a lot of ways was basically screwed...though the Blues did drag their feet when it came to putting together compensation for signing Shanahan (their first offer to the Devils was power play specialist Dan Quinn, which was a total joke), they did finally offer up a compensation package (centered around Brind'Amour and Joseph) that really was pretty fair.  The Blues 100% didn't want to lose Stevens and Stevens clearly very much wanted to be there for many many years...both parties had to be completely stunned at that turn of events.  It wasn't like either party wanted to move on...they were ripped apart from each other.

For sure, this is a more complex look at it all. The only point I'm making is that I think fans often look to see what newly traded for players say re: their excitement about joining the team. Fans want to see that the player is excited to be part of the squad. And often, players know to say the right things and express excitement about a "new opportunity," but none of this really appeals to me. I like to see that a player isn't necessarily comfortable with being "ripped apart" from a team. It says to me that player can become the type of player who would be uncomfortable being "ripped apart" from the Devils.

Of course, in Vatanen's case, if his play continues to decline, then it won't matter either way.

I think they're feeling so many emotions initially it's hard to get much of a true read on anything they say or do...if anything, they probably keep a lot of what they're really feeling pretty well-hidden, though safe and canned quotes.

I responded to the Stevens example mostly because it was so different...Henrique's and Vatanen's teams decided they didn't want their players anymore...not much you can do as a player if your employer makes that decision, and you don't have a NTC.  Obviously wasn't the case with the Blues...I bet they were chuckling to themselves and thinking "Sure Lou, you try to take Scott, that'll happen!"

I think anyone hoping for Rico to come back, he's like the long distance GF, he's going to find someone else. He'll fall for Anaheim, they have better better weather and beaches. He's also probably going to play with a mix of Perry, Getzlaf, and Kesler, so he's gonna put up points, especially once that team gets healthier.
