I was at my best friend's house for that game (he's one of the only cool Ranger fans on this Earth)...me and four others.  I could barely breathe that whole game.  When they were down 1-0 early I was thinking "C'mon, don't blow this, for the love of GOD pleeeeeeeease don't blow this!"  Of course that period ends 1-0, so I'm sitting there on my friend's couch, trying to relax...then Langs scores twice within 2:00 and I'm starting to feel good again...my friends start laughing at me because I'm actually starting to talk again...then it's 2-2 early in the third, and I'm back to silent white knuckles.  That was as tense as I've ever been for a game...even when Friesen scored, I still felt like there was so much time left, even with a little over 2 minutes left at that point.  It took a while to unwind from that game, even several minutes after it had ended.

Dude, you just completely typed out the exact same way I felt that entire game- I'm sure it's how we all felt. I was at bar in Morristown called Cutters (it has since closed)- they had a dining room in the back, and there was some kind of dinner/party going on in there. Meanwhile at the bar, there's me, my best friend and his girlfriend (who was a big Devs fan), some of her friends (all big Devs fans), and my best friend's brother, who- you guessed it- big Devs fan. Plus there were a bunch of other Devs fans there as well to watch. It was insanity. You could hear a pin drop in our area of the bar after Arvidsson put Ottawa up early. I had a sense of dread. Then Langs gets two big ones- BOOM. Bar is full of life now, but still tense. Bonk ties it- back to silence and dread and nervousness. And when Friesen scored... ERUPTION. It was nuts. High fives, hugs, jumping up and down- then we saw the clock. I'm yelling '2:14, 2:14, EVERYONE CALM DOWN NOW, WE GOTTA FINISH IT'. And when the Devils finished it, it was absolute pandemonium. One of the best nights I've ever had as a fan of this franchise. Absolutely insane win.

Heh heh, one of those games where a part of you is almost waiting for the refs to wave the players back onto the ice...like somehow it's not real and just too damned good to be true.  For some reason I was a lot less nervous about the SCF Game 7 that year...for some reason that felt much more like "They got this."  I definitely didn't feel that way in 2001 about Game 7 (especially after the Game 6 from hell).

For sure- I was nervous for game 7 against Anaheim, but I was confident. I was TERRIFIED before and during game 7 against Ottawa. I thought we were absolutely fvcked when we lost game 6 and blew the 3-1 series lead. Plus, we had to go to Ottawa, which was a madhouse. The other thing was I DID NOT wanna be the only other team in Conference Finals history to blow a 3-1 series lead, after we were the only to team to COME BACK from the same deficit three years earlier. That was a big point of pride with me. I damn near had to be committed after game 6, I wanted to run Colin White over with a semi lol.

Every time we play Ottawa I think back to 1998 and what BS that was. Damian Rhodes morphing into Hasek. Alfredsson and how stupid he looked in the Jofa bucket. Also 1996. They come in a garbage team. 17 wins. We're up 2-1 after 2 and lose? Suddenly Tom Chorske can hit the net?

I remember watching that game (1996), it was soul crushing. And I lived in a house with two roommates and all of our friends were over hanging out, about half were rags fans. We had to listen to so much sh*t that night. I do remember being called a fluke team who’d never win again, which is funny in hindsight.

NO NO THE LIGHT HAS NOT COME ON!

LGD, excited for this game tonight.

Keeping an eye on Hoffman, I have a feeling for some reason we'll be in on this guy at the deadline.

The 5-2 loss to the Sens on the last day of the 1995-96 season was the fvcking WORST.  I couldn't make it to that game, but a friend of mine did...she told me that she was actually crying after the game, because the Devils fans in attendance that were near her were basically all kind of turning on each other, mostly out of shock and frustration that the season was ending on such a sh!tty note.  I was up in Colgate that day, visiting my then-girlfriend...I was in her room, trying to get the WFAN on to hear what the final score was...it was very hard to get the station in, but I knew that the Devils were winning 2-1...then I heard 2-2...then tons and tons of static, but I had to know how it ended...finally I heard 5-2 final, and initially thought "OK, they went nuts at the end...thank god"...only to hear just enough to realize that they had just LOST 5-2.  I wasn't much fun to be around for the rest of that visit...I was pissed, stunned, upset, flustered, you name it.  And that season started with so much promise...they come off the SC sweep (after winning the final two games of the previous series against the Flyers), then win all of their preseason games, then start off 4-0-0 before they finally lose a game...then immediately beat Detroit AGAIN and beat the Sens to start off 6-1-0, having scored 4 goals in each of their wins...it really did feel like they were becoming invincible at that point.  Then seemingly out of nowhere, they go 9-18-4 and the rest of the season becomes this dogfight to right the ship...Lou tinkers with the roster a number of times to try to get them going...then eventually they go 13-3-7 and you really feel like they're going to find a way to cement a playoff berth, but screw up just enough down the stretch to blow it.  That season was such a firm boot to the balls...dammit all.

Richers lack of offense (perhaps mental health issues related) really hurt them that year. So did zilch from Broten. The team just lacked that pure playmaker to get guys the puck. Still they were also very unlucky and definitely playoff caliber. Some inferior teams out west made it.

Exactly, that trumps all. Winning it on the road in Ottawa the 1 seed, we were 2 for the right to play a cinderella team in the finals
