Do we really want to blow a ton of assets after all we gave up this calendar year for one year of Karlsson? Coming off a down year? A knee injury no one is sure how severe? While K is better than C, no argument here, one is “free”, one is not.

Carlson. I don't like the idea of totally changing the complexion and direction of the team by adding a superstar. Last time we did that, we had a cup contender that fvcked out of the playoffs in 5 games. Different scenario, of course, but I don't like an up and coming team totally changing their dynamic to accommodate something like that.

Let the Rangers sign him and we can watch another career die there.

This is a bad argument considering they made a Cup run the following year.

I totally understand wanting Tavares more, he’s a legit superstar, but to those that don’t want anything to do with Carlson how do you see Shero improving the blue line in the near future? I don’t think a package of Zacha and McLeod + picks is bringing back a top 2 d.

It might have to be Bratt as the center piece to such a deal.

Would you rather have Taylor Hall or Adam Larsson?

Never said I don’t want Tavares (who wouldn’t?). I just don’t think we have nearly as good a shot at landing him compared to Carlson. Would love to be wrong.

Only interested in Karlsson if he comes with Ryan and the Devils don't give up all that much.  The Devils are still behind - there doesn't appear to be a ton outside the NHL that will help them right now (it's easiest to say this in April when we're close to the next draft).  McLeod's a question mark, Anderson's probably an okay NHLer, I like what Boqvist did, and there's some interesting guys on defense, but there isn't that big prospect sitting out there crushing it in the Devils' system anywhere.

Can the Devils afford two monster contracts in two years? If they give JT 12 mil a yr will they be able to pay Hall? If yes by all means do it in a heartbeat, but I don’t even want to entertain the idea of not re-signing Hall.

Can they afford 3?  We need an additional  scorer AND a top Dman

I haven’t looked at it with a fine toothed comb, but you can assume the Devils could bring in one guy who will have a monster contract that’s currently not in the organization and still re-sign the guys in the organization we want to.

My guess is that Shero will try and make a big move for Tavares, and maybe see if Carlson wants to come here on a home town discount of sorts like Shattenkirk.  Notice that Shero specifically said he wasn’t going to overpay for Shattenkirk last year, so I don’t see why he does it for Carlson.  And now we have Butcher who looks like he can grow in to be a similar player at a fraction of the cost.

The problem with Carlson is that he has overpriced himself by having a career year this year and is not going to be near worth what he will cost.  I mean he had a 68 point season where his career high was previously 55 points and his second best was 39 points. I wouldn't say he's a definite disaster contract, but it probably won't be good.

On the other hand, you definitely go for Tavares, he's 28 at the start of next season, and a superstar like him could be good elite for another 6-8 years. That said, I'd rather he stay with the Isles and continue to suck with them than sign with another, better team in our division.

It was two years later after Kovalchuk changed everything about his game. And think about how much different that 2012 team was. Different coach, different captain, a load of new contributors (that 4th line, Clarkson, zidlicky). They had to do exactly what I don't want to see this team do; completely change the dynamic. That 2010 team hit a wall, and they re-tooled for one run. Is that the kind of project you want to put together? We're still recovering from that era.

We're building the right way. Don't fvck with the identity to make a splash. Big time free agents don't work the same way in hockey as they do in baseball or basketball.

Well now that’s just silly :P

Btw Megan Fox has serious hygiene issues so that’s kind of gross.

How do you know? lol

I just think Carlson is probably the best UFA defenseman since Suter and D being the team’s biggest need you have to go for it.

This is between a legit superstar and a borderline top pairing D man. This poll probably won't even be close. The problem I have with Karlsson is that he is going to hit FA(theoretically) so why spend the assets when you can make a pass at him for nothing? Carlson is going to get superpaid like Shattenkirk, but I think he is at least a safer bet than Shattenkirk was as far as his consistency of play is concerned.

Tavares would be amazing but it is such a long shot. On the topic of long shots, imagine Shero landing Carlson and Karlsson though...holy crap.

Something like:?

Karlsson - Mueller

Carlson - Vatenen

Butcher - Severson/Lovejoy/Santini???

I would really like Shero to work his magic to bring in Tavares, although I think that there will be a lot of teams vying for his services.  I just don't know if Tavares will want to sign here and for the price.

Shero has a lot of work to do this summer.  Yes, we made the playoffs, but the team needs to be re-freshed, especially on the back line.

I know I'm dreaming, but what is the chance that Shero can take advantage of Chicago's abysmal year and try to pry away Patrick Kane or Brandon Saad from the Blackhawks?  Is Galchenyuk back in the conversation from Montreal?

D-wise I would like to see no one short of Drew Doughty on the Devils.  Maybe a pretty-boy like Severson, and some young guns like Bratt/McLeod and a 1st can land Doughty?

Isn't the reason JT is supposedly considering quitting NYI because he wants a chance at a Cup? If so I guess it'll depend on which team he thinks will give him the best chance of it. Let's face it, he's going to get a truck load of money wherever he goes. I would love Shero & Hynes to whisper sweet nothings in his ear like they did with Hall & Butcher though.

The guy who was a healthy scratch is now a 1D and Vatanen is a 2D??? I don’t think so.

The true answer to the poll question is “Yes please!”, but if I have to choose one, it’s Tavares.  I can’t even imagine how deadly Tavares and Hall could be together.

I feel like the poll should have been who do you think the Devils have a better chance at landing?  Obviously Tavares is going to run away with a poll of who people want.

Agreed. My answer to that would have been Carlson. We need a stud defenseman. Not that we don’t need Tavares, I just see him being harder to land with Toronto (hometown) and the Rangers being interested.

I get the Rangers weren’t a playoff team this year, but if they add Tavares and Kovalchuk, and add back in a healthy Shattenkirk, they could have a very different season.
