FWIW, there were some quotes yesterday that de Haan didn't even take the "best offer" because he wanted to go to Carolina (does every FA say that? is it a requirement to the signing?).  Anyway, I guess coaching/winning didn't play so much into his decision (j/k, kinda?):

@ArmstrongABC11 Jul 3  de Haan on NC: “Not much winter... taxes are good. 2 hours from mountains, 2 hours from ocean.”

Actually I'm glad to see players preferring to go to destinations like Carolina as opposed to the same old Toronto, LA NY and Chicago BS.

It has to be Sergachev, doesn't it?   Yzerman wouldn't dare flip a newly extended McDonough, would he?

It won’t be Sergachev. It certainly won’t be McDonagh. It’ll be Koekkoek, a prospect, and a 1 (which may as well be a 2). Because it just seems that normal rules don’t pertain to Yzerman. Maybe throw Stralman in there because they need to move his contract if they wanna re-sign Karlsson.

Common sense would say Point would be part of the deal.... but he won’t be. It’ll be a massive underpayment (because Yzerman), and we’ll all be sitting here saying ‘THAT’S IT?!’

If it’s Tampa and Ottawa gets nothing in return, Ottawa deserves to suck forever.

Trading a player like Karlsson within your own dixision is the dumbest thing you can ever do.

Unless, of course, Ottawa thinks Karlsson is a shell of himself.

This is an interesting point.    Ottawa got nothing for Mike Hoffman because they refused to trade within the division and now they're going to turn around and send the best defenseman in the league to Tampa?

...and would you trust Ottawa’s judgement on that? Because I wouldn’t trust Ottawa to judge a dog show.

I would imagine if it's Tampa the package is something like 2020 1st, Cal Foote, Brayden Coburn, and Taylor Raddysh, or something to that effect. I wouldn't be too quick to throw Callahan in that trade, Callahan has a no-move and I can't imagine he would sign off on a trade to Ottawa.

EDIT: Also something to consider, Tampa doesn't have their 2019 1st or 2nd available to barter with in this since those two are tied up in the conditions of the McDonagh trade with the Rangers.

Am I the only one who's totally okay with Karlsson going to Tampa? Let them have a nose slapping contest with Toronto and Boston for a few years while we continue the back-end of our re-build... they'll beat up on Florida enough to get 2 metro wild-card teams.

The other report is that the Blue Jackets are heavily involved in trying to acquire Karlsson, and fuuuuuuck that sh!t.

I’d prefer he go to the west if he isn’t coming to the Devils. And COLUMBUS? Yeah fvck that, if he’s willing to sign there, he damn well better be willing to sign here. I don’t have to go into all the reasons NJ is a better place to live than motherfvcking Columbus, Ohio, so I’m not gonna waste my time. There is NO REASON we should not be involved in these talks.

Pack it up boys, the east belongs to the Atlantic Division.

I don't know what I'd do if I was Shero at this point.

And, again, the tax situation is absolute garbage.  Why impose a salary cap if teams in tax-free states are completely able to undercut it.  fvcks sake.

What exactly are they supposed to about whether or not a given state has state income tax? That's not a new development. Even if there is no salary cap, they'd still be able to take less money in this states and earn the same. Eliminate the salary cap and EVERY star player will want to team up Golden State Warriors style, earn their money, pay no state tax, and win a handful of Cups.

I'm not a CBA lawyer or smart enough to come up with a workable solution, clearly.

But I dunno, something where the hard cap varies from team to team depending on the state's tax rate.  IE if NJ's state tax is 10% (simple math, it isn't) then give NJ a 10% boost to their cap limit.

I mean as it stands Tampa essentially has almost a 30% cap advantage over a state like California, for example.  That's insane.

A millionaire whose great grandkids will never have to worry about money will have a few less million. How terrible. I’m sure he’ll be clipping those coupons lol.

You'd be amazed at how broke athletes wind up, same with people coming into big money... we aint talking a few million..and just because you make lots of money doesnt mean you should have most of it taken away.. 56%, screw that

Sad thing is we could easily beat that deal.  Our first in 2019 is more valuable than Tampa’s first in 2020, Severson is more valuable than Foote, and Bratt is more valuable than Raddysh.

The athletes who wind up broke wind up that way because they’re fvcking stupid, not because they pay higher taxes. Surround yourself with sound financial advisors and don’t blow your money on garbage. If it drives, flies, floats, or fvcks- lease it.

Even if JT loses 56% of his money, he's still walking away with $5M a year for 7 years, I think he'll be fine for basically ever.

There was actually an ESPN 30-for-30 doc on ex-NFL players that go broke after their careers, and I was expecting to feel sorry for a lot of these guys but I felt no remorse for the people they interviewed for this. There was one guy who couldn't pay his child support bills because he spent that money on a new Hummer 3 instead, a lot of the stories in that doc amounted to just pure stupidity.
