2018 UFA Thread

Recommended Posts

I honestly wonder what he means regarding the interview period.  I feel like it served its purpose almost.. exactly.
Maybe he's just annoyed he didn't get another week to try and convince JT to stick around.

It sounds like he’s pissed he lost another high profile UFA to me.

I'm so fvcking livid about this FA period. LeBron signed in LA? Really? Wtf, is Ray doing anything? If I find out Ray didn't even call his agent to inquire about coming to NJ I'm going to be pissed.

I like to tell people I’m an architect, Art Vandeley.

Others have already hit on this note, but no. Hallsy is younger, healthier, and is coming off his 1st career Hart trophy, certainly wouldn't trade him for Karlsson. The list of players I'd trade Hall

Kucherov signs 8 year extension with Tampa. 8 x 9.5AAV.

Wonder if this was the holdup on the Karlsson trade.  Easier to plan Karlsson's extension with Kucherov's number known.

Serious Golden State Warriors thing going on in Tampa right now.

Or their plan B in the wake of accepting a failed trade negotiation with OTT.

They'll still get him I think.

They know now exactly how much they can afford to give Karlsson - or rather, how much they need to move.

Every time a transaction takes place, we all sit here and say ‘DOMINOES!!!!’ It probably means nothing, other than Kucherov signed an extension.

Good signing by them...locked up long term, and at a pretty reasonable price, considering what he's done the last couple years.

Also, my oldest step-son works at that restaurant :)

It is a hard cap. States have different income tax laws- sadly, those are the breaks. If you want an example of a fake cap, look no further than the NBA.

Tampa's effective salary cap compared to a team in California is 30% higher.  That's an absolutely ridiculous advantage.

It’s always been this way- just how it is. Nothing can be done about it. The Panthers have the same advantage. They’ve sucked for eternity.

"hard cap"

This is literally the first offseason people are complaining about this, compared to other sports the NHL has the best system. Lower taxes are just those team's lure, just like the Original 6 has that lure, LA has the big market lure, different teams have different appeals and that's just one that the non-traditional markets have. Different guys want different things in free agency, not every guy is chasing pure money so the attraction of less taxes has less weight on certain multi-millionaires.

I disagree, but no biggie. I've always thought state tax laws were always somewhat involved in decisions.  Can be extra millions of dollars.

Rumor has it Tyler Seguin is on the block.

Kucherov's deal seems lower than it ought to be. I'm thinking that was done intentionally so they can bring in Karlsson and win several Cups.

Also, see the tax conversation above.

I will not because it’s ridiculous. He signed there because they are a juggernaut. Like others have pointed out, Panthers have the same tax advantage (which is not new, even though it’s the thing to complain about this year), and yet they still ice a steaming pile of turds every year.

Uh... I was just saying that he signed for $9.5 because it’s the equivalent of making 11 somewhere else. It all evens out. That was my point. I agree with you that complaining about it is ridiculous. I’m the one who referenced the Panthers too.

That's fine, I'm glad we agree. ;)

9.5M AAV equates to 12M AAV in New York.

He got his money, and Tampa gets a superstar on a very cheap deal.
