William Nylander: Should the Devil's be interested? Do we have the assets?

Pretty straight forward, Should Ray be making enquiries? If so, what do we need to be offering?

Of course I have seen the Rangers be mentioned as an interested party, but is this the sort of move they want to be making at the beginning of a full rebuild.

The leafs are going to be looking for a very decent return, what would you be willing to offer?

We don’t have enough to offer. They want D and we can’t afford to part with the few promising defenseman we have.

I could see them asking for Bratt and Ty Smith (maybe something else too).  I'm open to moving Bratt in the right deal, but I think the Devils gotta hang onto Smith no matter what.  I know he's currently in a league that he's just way too good for at the moment, which makes it hard to put his numbers in perspective, but I gotta think he's making the Devils next season.

But yeah, as much as I'd love the Devils to grab him (who wouldn't want a youngster who's already shown that he can produce?), I agree with others, not sure the attractive (but expendable) assets are there right now to get a deal done.  Wish that wasn't the case.

Outside of the top line Ty Smith might be the one guy I’d consider untouchable right now.

Depending on his contract ask - maybe.  If this kid is looking for 8M / 8 years then I'll take a hard pass.

But if his ask is reasonable, I just don't know what we can offer Toronto that would beat out other offers.  Our 1st is off the table (given how absolutely sh!tty we've looked as of late), Smith has to be off the table unless we're getting an absolute elite talent back.. I just don't think McLeod / Santini / Zacha gets us anything interesting anymore.

Remember when we all were strongly against trading at least 2 of those 3 cause they were the future?

Ray has to make the call to find out what it’d take, then feel like sh!t thanks to the wonderful farm system Lou left him with.

Let me throw another name out there and see what the consensus is - if Toronto asks for Butcher as the major piece in a trade do you do it?

I think I would.  I like Butcher a lot, but I think his game has some serious limitations that might not go away.. I'm going to guess the majority here would not want to trade him.

I probably would.  Not sure if Toronto would be up for it.

Rather him than Bratt.

The fact that Smith is waiting in the wings probably helps.  I don't think Butcher as the major piece would be enough though.

Also, is Butcher an UFA or RFA after this season?  Not sure with the whole college thing and that could also lower his trade value if he is an UFA.

I know we're sitting on a ton of cap space and eventually want to use it somewhere but I don't think Nylander is worth even 75% of the contract he's reportedly asking for.

The Devils can afford to give out at least one giant contract for someone who currently isn't in the organization and there aren't any awards given out for most efficient use of cap space and it certainly doesn't amount to more wins.  So the issue if the Devils decide to go after Nylander should not be how much you have to pay him, but what you have to give up for him so far as assets.

I still cannot understand this line of thought about Bratt.  I just don't think he is anywhere close to untouchable or even valuable/essential.

Definitely not untouchable. Like I said up thread, only the first line and Ty Smith should be right now. He’s definitely valuable though. Kid scored 13 goals as a 19 year old rookie.

I just value Bratt’s skill as a top 6 forward over a 3rd pairing PP specialist who’s pretty bad defensively.

I don't disagree about your assessment of Butcher, but I don't see Bratt as a top 6 forward either.

Yes we should be interested. No we don’t have the assets.

This is unfortunately probably the answer.

There's no way on earth Butcher is a "major piece" in a trade for the type of player we need. Butcher, Bratt and a 2020 first? Maybe. I wouldn't do it.
