2019 New York Mets Season Thread

Thing about these lefties though, they go through rocky parts of their careers and if they can figure it out....make some adjustment, learn how to pitch when their velocity naturally decreases with age (maybe adopt a new pitch or experiment with a new arm angle) they can last forever. Either as 6 inning max soft tossing starters or specialists that come out of the bullpen.

He may fade quickly and be gone, but because he throws left handed he will be given so many more chances to prove it and reinvent himself than any other pitcher. I say if he doesn't just fade away and gets that 2nd wind...that means he'll still be starting somewhere at 43 😜

Vargas looked absolutely hopeless finished no chance at all DONE. And yet he continues to putter along somewhat effectively. Hey if you're a lefty with an era under 5.00. You will be starting somewhere.

This is all fair...geez, look how long Ollie Perez has stuck around...and not like he’s been the only lefty to have 9 lives or more.  And even if Gio isn’t all that good anymore, he’s still a passable fifth starter-type for now.

I’d have to look up his peripherals, but I’m not sure if he’s a guy who tough on lefties. Not all lefties are cut out to be lefty specialists.

Already sick of looking at Stroman. Huge game and he lets up a first batter HR

Like a light switch with him. Mets jersey comes on, his ability to pitch evaporates.

And lazy nonsense fielding on top of it

Smyly is a guy they should be destroying. Stroman with another gutless hittable outing. Being demolished by a lineup without Harper

Want nothing to do with Stroman anymore. He can't pitch in New York.

Yeah I’m done with Stroman too.  All he’s done since coming here is prove how ordinary and hittable he is.

And Kay makes his major league debut, and it’s a good one...2 ER and 8 K in 5.2 IP. Kay said that the reason he turned it around in AAA with the Jays was that in Syracuse, the Mets were poking and prodding with his MO, while the Jays just told him to do his thing.

Way to go Brodie.  Way to go Mets.

Football can't get here fast enough.  At least until the Jets' first agida moment.

Yeah Stroman's another clown in the clown car...although half of me thinks he'll somehow pick it up when he goes to the Yankees on a bargain deal after next year.

I’m up here in Foxborough...going to the Pats’ opener tonight.

As much I enjoy football (often in spite of himself), hockey is my #1...that really can’t some soon enough.  For me, it’s hockey #1, football #1A, and baseball #1B.  I get heavily into ALL of them of course, but there’s just that little extra something about hockey that sings to me.

So apparently Noah is bitching and moaning yet again about having to throw to Wilson Ramos.

For a guy who likes to play up the whole "Thor" caricature, man can Noah seem extremely soft, sensitive, and not very tough at all.  Almost seems like he goes into any start where Ramos is catching him with a bad attitude right off the bat.

That being said, there is a fair body of work that does seem to show that Noah sure does perform a lot better when he's throwing to Nido or Rivera.  So maybe it's simply time to stop plugging round pegs with square holes, and just have Noah throw to Nido?  Nido can't hit worth sh!t and we all know it, but Ramos could always hit off the bench after Noah comes out of the game.  Just seems like forcing these two to continue to work together isn't ever going to pay off.

Never thought the Mets would ever see a 50 home run guy. Especially in the Shea days. That stadium was fair dimension wise but with the big open end when it got windy in there...it knocked more balls down than over the wall. I always saw it as a pitchers park but not an extreme one. Citi was an extreme hitters park when it opened, but with the adjustments, the fact it is closed, and the mega juiced ball...it looks like it may finally happen somehow

And deGrom brilliant once again gets the W. The Mets probably should officially be buried right about now but are still kind of playing meaningful baseball somehow. But there aren't many sands left at the top of the hour glass and 4 out is pretty steep this lead. if they can get it to...2 out with 12 to play that would be something. We'll see

They’re on life support for now, but they just need too much help, and have too many teams ahead of them...and they just came up way too small in losing 10 of their last 16 games.  Fact is they don’t deserve the second WC berth...unless they go on another extended rampage...as in, 17-2 or 16-3 to close out the season.  Won’t happen.

Anything to say now?

I mean, kind of?

In good faith banter, though. You guys are alright for Mets fans.

The results speak for themselves...Philly won the season series 12-7.  Mets had their moments against the Phils, but nowhere near enough of them.

Phillies did get the best of the Mets this season. I think the teams are about equal, with Philly slightly better. Neither of us are worthy of a playoff bid

Mets have major work to do this offseason on the bullpen. The staff they can leave as it is if they want but of course...Wheeler, Matz, Syndergaard, I would entertain trading each and every one of them as long as we're getting at a ready made starter in return to fill that spot. I don't think all 3 are getting traded but I could see Syndergaard going. His comments of late about Ramos pissed me off. Is he kidding...with the way Ramos was absolutely RAKING for a month. An endless hitting streak. The guy was locked in and crushing the ball and he wants his own personal catcher.

You're not Greg Maddux. Pitch to Ramos and figure it out. And how about being grateful for Ramos bat?

Yeah I touched on this earlier, but Noah comes off as a prima donna (whose performance doesn't justify his attitude) far too often.  Ramos is definitely not a good defensive catcher and leaves a lot to be desired as far as that goes...but the guy is about as clutch as it gets at the plate, when he's rolling.  The guy can hit plenty.  Like I've seen others say...hey Noah, how about PITCHING BETTER?

There is no way Ramos is responsible for ALL of Syndergaards failures as a pitcher when he's throwing to them. A lot of that is on Noah, and in his head, and his failure to make adjustments. If you're giving up 2 runs in 6 1/3 with Nido then ok...maybe give up 3 or 4 in 6 or 7 with Rivera. But if you're giving up 6 or 7 runs...that's probably mostly on you Noah

LOL keep talking Mickey...a 'competitive advantage'?  To have Todd Frazier get two extra AB's over JD Davis?  I'm sure the Angels will start bringing Trout off the bench ASAP cause it's a competitive advantage to pinch-hit him in the fifth inning too.

If Thor was getting deGrom's run support he'd be whining to get Ramos's bat in the lineup lol

Yeah he's got a little Odell Beckham in him only without the off-field hijinxs (yet).

We have a very cute and sweet cat at home...who's about as dumb as they come.  Every time we start to think "Maybe she's smarter than we give her credit for..." she does something that immediately to remind you "Yep, she's an idiot."

Just like Mickey.

The bats weren't there tonight. Only 5 hits total but Wheeler was surprisingly brilliant in a big spot. And who knew...when you stay away from the cursed poison that is Diaz & Familia good things can happen. Flores was so clutch with us I kind of expected him to come through there in the 9th...but the guy on the mound wasn't gutless for a change

But here's the thing...they have to sweep. Not many games left. Little 2 out of 3's...not enough. They need to reel off 8 of 9, 10 of 12...something like that

Well it only took Mickey about 140 games to eschew Diaz for Justin Wilson when the 'book' says you can't pitch a lefty to Wilmer lol

Lol so given a five-run lead, Matz walks two hitters to lead off the second.  That’s so HIM.

Even better, now walks the bases LOADED.  God he’s such a loser.

Somehow he gets out of it, but Jesus H. 49 pitches through 2 innings.

Guess Matz remembered he was pitching at home.  Somehow got through six innings unscathed.  Second inning really blew up his pitch count.  Feels like Familia and Diaz will get in the game tonight...oh sweet Jesus...
