Yeah I could see it ending ugly with him.  And this is exactly the kind of deal that the Mets seem to have no luck in making.  Of course if he went to the Yankees he'd have a career year.

ha. True. I have to give some credit to the Yankees their analytics and advanced scouting found a ton of diamonds in the rough last year. They were killed by injuries and didn't miss a beat. Urshela, Voit, Tauchman etc they just found one after the other that they plugged in and produced

After last offseason I'm actually just glad Brodie didn't do something stupid to get Marte.  They have enough outfielders as it is if the boar hunter actually can get to camp in one piece.

I'm even surprised they already spent as much as they have this offseason although obviously a lot of it was explained by the Cespedes savings.

Doesn't seem like the Mets were really all THAT in on Marte...like we've discussed, general lack of prospect depth and having to spend more money without appearing to have an easy way to dump any existing payroll probably killed this one before it had much of a chance to gain any real steam.

That being said, I agree Has, in that would've been a typical Mets "Lets just bring in another body and worry about how he really fits in later" kind of move.

As far as Ces goes...as much as I'm not a fan of the DH coming to the NL, too bad it couldn't be this year.  Ces might have a decent second career as a DH...for a guy who wants to earn a lot of money but not really play, he'd get to sit in the dugout plenty.

OH BOY....I was wondering what Evan was referring to on the radio.  I should have guessed, typical.  Probably the Wilpons threw in too many codicils (like the silly five-year window) they weren't backing off on.

Apparently the rumor first got initiated by Barstool, Paul LoDuca works for them so who knows...but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't expecting this on some level.

There’s some indication that it’s Cohen who is coyly leaking this stuff while at the same time bringing up the confidentiality agreement.

Why wouldn't he when the Wilpons were the ones that (predictably) tried to change the deal at the last minute again the way they did with Einhorn?

Quote

Multiple sources close to the situation are confirming that the billionaire hedge fund manager is ending negotiations with the Wilpons on his purchase of an 80 percent stake in the franchise. According to those sources, Cohen is deeply unhappy with the Wilpons changing the terms of the deal at a very late stage and has decided to walk away.

When rumors broke that the Cohen deal was dead on Tuesday, the Mets offered a strangely worded non-denial: “The parties are subject to confidentiality obligations, including a mutual non-disclosure agreement, and therefore cannot comment.”

Sources close to Cohen tell The Post that the 63-year-old, $13 billion man is holding his tongue for the time being.

...

But sources familiar with the talks said the Wilpons pushed late to maintain some control of the franchise beyond the five-year window. There also appears to have been some disagreement over the long-term status of SNY. Details are murky on the SNY front, but initial reports might have overstated the simplicity of the Wilpons retaining ownership of the network as a separate entity.

What sounds to good to be true usually is.

Maybe it's some sort of negotiating tactic going on but come on now...Manfred step in and get this done

YOU wanted Beltran fired and we fired him

Now you get us our owners

And also fvck the reporters too for being spineless and carrying water for the franchise, whether it’s Heyman or Martino intimating that ‘Cohen will now have trouble buying a franchise anywhere’ as if he wouldn’t have tried already if he wanted just any team.

Don’t get me wrong Cohen is probably pretty shady too but you know the Ponzis are also shady and weren’t exactly being realistic with that whole five year transition nonsense.

https://nypost.com/2020/02/06/jeff-wilpons-power-play-derailed-mets-sale-to-steve-cohen/

“This guy has never done anything in his life other than play a week of minor league baseball and work for his dad,” said the former Mets staffer. “The Mets are his life. He can’t do anything else.”

By all accounts, Jeff’s current leadership of the organization is extremely hands-on. Every facet of the team, from baseball operations to marketing, is known to be under his purview.

“He is the owner and the de facto general manager,” said one source close to the team. “He does not want to give that up, even if everyone around him does.”

That about sums you up Jeffy, doesn't it?  I can't even call you a piece of sh!t anymore...that's too much of an insult to pieces of sh!t.  You'd have to climb up about halfway up Mt. Everest just to reach POS levels.

Just remember, you will never EVER be remembered as anything more than a spoiled brat and an incompetent buffoon who forever ruins EVERYTHING he touches.  fvck you.

Kinda glad this little "experiment" is over with...this whole move just reeked of BVW trying to prove how outside-the-box intelligent he is, really.  I don't really think she brought much of anything to the table:

Yeah I feel like this is kind of a forced (but quiet) parting of the ways after her comments re: the sign-stealing scandal.  I seriously doubt she was ever that big a factor anyway.

And yeah it's laughable that Fred and Jeff keep trying to leverage this sale to get Jeff job security for life.  It doesn't work that way boys.  This isn't the movie Casino where you have to keep the useless dipsh!t nephew of the county commissioner who can't work a slot machine for the sake of greasing palms.

Well guess Cohen was the last chance for Jeffy boy to maintain some control after all, hopefully this is true and gets done sooner rather than later

No preconditions regarding control of the team will be attached to the upcoming sale, meaning whoever buys the Mets will likely assume control immediately from the Wilpon family, according to a person familiar with the matter. By showing a willingness to cede the control issue at the outset, the Wilpons may actually reap more than the Major League Baseball-record $2.6 billion that Cohen had agreed to pay, according to sports consultant Marc Ganis.

...

The Wilpons are wasting little time trying to find another buyer for the franchise they assumed control of in 2002 at a valuation of $391 million.

Allen & Co., the investment bank retained by the Mets, will begin its post-Cohen sales process Monday, according to the person. As was the case with the Cohen deal, no part of the team’s profitable regional sports network, SNY, will be included in the sale.

Whoever buys the team will assume annual losses of at least $50 million, according to a person familiar with the team’s finances.

If that part is true it shows just how incompetent the Wilpons are, it's likely funny accounting in part due to the Madoff-induced debts but still shows the Wilpons are probably being quietly nudged out.  Of course it makes little sense they'd be willing to give up control now when it was apparently a sticking point with Cohen, guess they thought they had more leverage with him than they did cause of him being a Mets fan and really wanting the team.

Those quotes are absolute nightmare fuel. This is what we all suspected, we all feared, but probably didn't really actually think was truly true. But it seems like every word of it might be. And the think with Jeff is that he's not some young kid, the guy is pushing SIXTY and is some petulant man-child.

There's stories about him going back to when Fred first bought the Mets...apparently he had the "born on third base and thinks he hit a triple" mentality down even as a young man.  But yeah, easy for us to speculate about what kind of guy he is, as fans...but like you said, it sounds like our rants about him couldn't have hit the nail harder...and for all we know, his dad may not even like him as a person all that much.  Doesn't sound like ANYONE does.
