GDT: NHL Draft Lottery Thread DEVILS. #. ONE. OVER. ALL!

Down Goes Brown Lottery Preview ended with a ranking of who would win the lottery:

2. Edmonton Oilers – Their unprecedented success in ending up with the No. 1 pick is well-documented. What the 1980s Oilers were to the Stanley Cup, the 2010s Oilers have been to picking first overall. It’s almost as if they came into possession of some sort of magic monkey paw in 2010, a talisman that manipulated the laws of random chance, an unbeatable advantage that guaranteed lottery success before the draw was even held …

1. New Jersey Devils – … that they then traded to the Devils. Congratulations on yet another win, Taylor Hall.

Not trying to sound too sensationalist here - but the outcome of the lottery may have major ramifications way beyond who we end up drafting.

Taylor Hall when considering re-signing if we have Hughes/Kakko on the roster vs. a kid two or three years out?  Huge difference.

I admit, I haven't spent much time looking at the potential Top-6 picks...would all of the other names be down-the-line guys, or is there anyone else that has a real shot to make the team out of the 2019-20 preseason?

Even if the Devils don't wind up with Hughes or Kakko, doesn't mean that Shero can't make other moves to sell Hall on staying.

Hey we could always trade that kid who is three years out for some immediate star.

Does anyone actually know how much guys like Hall, or any player for that matter, actually know about the upcoming prospects and draft picks?  I mean, we all have the time, if we're so inclined, to talk about the team and do some research on the guys, watch highlights, etc, so I just wonder if someone like Hall, who's busy playing a full 82 game schedule, practicing, and working out, actually has the time to look at a player like Hughes or Kaako and have that potentially weigh on their decision of whether or not to stay or go somewhere.  Sure he can read the same headlines and all that, and maybe there's a chance he might know him on a personal level, or at the very least know someone that knows him, but they're not exactly in the same age bracket or stage of their careers, so I'm just curious.

I'm just not sure I can envision Hall sitting down with current Devils players, or even his family members, shooting the sh!t and being like "Dude, if we get Hughes, I'm definitely re-signing here - he's gonna make us awesome!"

Hall played like 30 games this season. He had nothing but time...

My (limited) understanding is that the Russian kid is an intriguing #3 but there are concerns whether he'd even consider coming over for another two years.  The rest of the guys in the top-6 all seem to be talented but not necessarily NHL-ready.

To your second point - absolutely, you're right.  But winning the draft lottery would be a pretty sick tool for Shero to utilize.

I mean Hall went first overall, I think he knows how valuable and talented that type of player typically is.

While he's almost certainly not an expert on Hughes and Kakko, I think he'll be able to appreciate the impact of adding such a highly-touted player.  He (Hall) specifically called out the lack of talent at certain positions.. well, adding one of the two guys above is a free way to solve that.

I didn't realize the lottery drawing was so soon, but I'm glad it is.  The suspense was gonna eat at me.  This also gives me something hockey-related to watch early this week too, before the playoffs start.

This is the first year it’s been this early. I remember the Nico lottery being in May or June, of course I don’t remember which though

True - I suppose the fact that the went first overall is a pretty good point, I guess that makes him more able to relate to the upcoming potential #1/#2 picks than another star player who might've been a second or even third rounder.

I still just am not convinced that plays a huge role in his decision.  The biggest things I think most people agree on that players will look for are price/term, followed closely by location and/or region.  Money talks, so that's always going to be number one, and after that, most players either have established families, or are starting to put that in their future plans, so where they want to set up shop is probably the next biggest factor.  I think the possibility of upcoming players maybe being drafted, or even players potentially being targeted through free agency for that matter, is third.  Maybe not a distant third, but I think it's more of an afterthought than anything else.

I mean, I can't imagine a guy like Hall who's 28 or so has the cell phone numbers of these guys and is in touch with them in any way.  To my point earlier, he's at a different stage of his career and it's not like he would have played with, or against, any of these guys, so how much does he really know about them and how much would they influence his decision?  Maybe some, but I dunno if it's a ton.

I thought it seemed ridiculously early this year, glad I'm not going crazy.  Not complaining though, I definitely prefer knowing now, so it gives us something to talk about for the next few months, instead of just speculating on where we might be picking from.

It was in April, just towards the end of the month.

Or the pick itself.  We're all kind of assuming Shero will automatically use it to take a player (and that's probably what will happen).  Who knows, instead of packaging a second or third or fourth rounder, maybe he considers moving that first and one of his seconds for something pretty big.

EDIT:  Assuming it's not the #1 or #2 overall pick of course.

I have read that Cozens and Dach could both be guys that play right away due to their size and skating ability. If we all expect Ty Smith to make it next year then no reason to think Byram couldn't too given their similar productions in the same league.
