Hughes vs Crosby

Recommended Posts

This prob belongs in the Hughes or Kakko thread but with all the potential Hughes has and all these discussions I’m pretty sure most on this board wants Hughes, but what if Ray F’s up and goes with Kakko?  Does anyone have any insider information or is related to Ray? Lol. Please tell him to go with Hughes :)

Def made the right choice selecting Nico over Nolan in ‘17.  Sure as hell hopes he makes the right decision again this time around.

It is interesting, given the choice last time he went with the European. I don’t see that happening this time, but you never know!!

He passed on the guy with injury concerns last time, wonder if Kakko was truly neck and neck with Hughes if his health issues would be enough to sway Shero towards Hughes? I honestly have no idea how many NHL players deal with diabetes, but I assume it’s pretty manageable? The cileac disease I know is not a big deal, as my mom has it.

I don’t think Hughes and Dahlin are the same level of prospect value. Dahlin got the “generational” defenseman label; those don’t get tossed around frequently.

The word "generational talent" is tossed around every single draft lately (save for 2017). McDavid, Matthews, Dahlin, Hughes. Yea, not always for defensemen, obviously, but the term "generational" is  pretty much meaningless now because of its gross overuse by media and fans.

Yup. You aren’t “generational” when there’s multiple guys from the same generation that are also “generational”. That’s just not how it works.

I haven’t heard the term “generational” used by actual hockey writers to describe anyone that wasn’t Crosby, McDavid or Dahlin.

In fact I distinctly remember people saying Auston Matthews is a franchise forward but he is NOT a generational talent.

You’re a generational poster, IMHO.

You’re a generational memer. Imagine how strong NJDEVS.com will be having us as a 1-2 punch down the middle?

now we really need some defense. I nominate SD, he’s always overly defensive.

:)

Which one of the two has a borderline committable addiction to Taylor Hall? I’ll be that one.

I dont think he passed on Nolan for injury concerns. Hischier was simply on the rise going from a late round pick to a first round pick within a few months and shero probably figured that his ceiling was higher than Nolan if his projection was right.

This is incredibly important. At that age, kids can develop and improve incredibly within a year and some take longer than others for various reasons. Sometimes they even bloom way later once in the NHL, thats why you got guys like Kucherov or Gaudreau at times considered the best players in the league and they were not even first round picks... same with Dmen... they always say it takes longer for dmen to develop... and sure enough... many of the top dmen in the league were not even first round picks... some were like doughty but some were like 2nd,3rd round picks... it's all about when they are hitting their full potential.

Thats kind of why i don't put that much into the "this player has been rated #1 for 1-2 years"... it's really not impossible that other players suddenly explose and leap over them. And also why i was at least willing to give Kakko some credits and consider him if scouts thought he could have been on the rise and a late bloomer

You son of a...

Edit: well perfect timing to bring up that Subban was voted BY NHL PLAYERS the most overrated player in the league. And by quiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite a wide margin (he was 23% while the 2nd place was 9%). So there's that. https://www.tsn.ca/player-poll-subban-laine-most-overrated-1.1265431

So find me a better D partner than that will ya.

How could Hughes come in here and break up Nico and Hall's budding romance??

There's plenty. I can't do this all day. Saw articles debating the generational tag for Larkin and Svechnikov. You're gonna say it's not thrown around often? It's become synonymous with "really good".

It’s the most over and mis-used word on the planet and I wish people would just stop saying it.

I’d like to see anything in writing where it was argued that someone who wasn’t on central scouting’s top ten North American skaters (Larkin)  being “generational.”

To my knowledge, the first time it got used in any sport was with McDavid.  I don’t even remember the term being used for Lebron.  It seems to have caught on in other sports since then.

I remember it being used for Crosby. Wayne Gretzky said he thought Sid could break some of his records.

It wasn't when he was a prospect, it was written by some Detroit area paper since he's been in the league.

My point is that it's horribly overused. If you hear it more than once in a generation, it's not being used properly.

To some extent, i get it. Players are better than ever, and scouts are seeing guys with tools that you almost never saw ten or fifteen years ago almost every draft. Ii'm sure the knee jerk reaction to long time scouts seeing these guys is that they're generational, which they all would've been in the year 2000.

Now kind of unrelated, I wonder how jack's scouting would've gone back then. Does anyone have the balls to draft someone of his size first overall 20 years ago? I doubt it.

i cannot overstate how i really think that we should get Elias to spend some time with Hughes for a bit during the summer.

That kid is a sponge and Elias is like..... Liquid Nutella.

I would say "water" might have been a netter reference, but I am sure its your second favorite thing to be absorbed by a sponge which is why it got ignored.
