Over the past 4 seasons I believe he averaged 3 fights per season.  Not saying his game is know soft, but I don't think his game is feared by anyone at this point.  At that rate we may need to reacquire Gabriel, Farnham and/or LeBlond

He doesn't need to fight to add toughness. Just hitting someone would be more helpful than a lot of what the team did. And making contact with the opponent and not crashing into the boards like Wood would also be cool

If we’re lucky it’s the boards. Usually it’s the opposing goalie.

A down year for him was 17 goals. I’m good with this signing. Needed a RW anyway. And it will hopefully help what is already shaping up to be a good PP unit(s).

Exactly. Think of the RW we are replacing him with.

Then let me know what that guy’s name was, because I’m not sure we had any right wings last year other than Palmieri.

Not entirely crazy about this deal but this made me feel slightly better - from MM / nhl.com :

Simmonds had surgery May 1, 2018 to repair a pelvis tear on his right side and a torn abdominal muscle on his left side. He also missed the Predators final three playoff games after being hit in the knee with a shot during Game 2 of the Western Conference First Round against the Dallas Stars.

"When you have (pelvis and groin) surgery like that they tell you to take 9-12 months to recover," Simmonds said. "It's safe to say it kind of hurt me a little bit last year but at the same time I'm going to continue to play hockey to help my team. Last year, from those surgeries I didn't get a lot of time to train in the summer and the summer was spent primarily rehabbing so there were a lot of ups and downs last year. I've already been in the gym for six weeks this year so it's going to be a big change and I'm just looking forward to proving everybody wrong to be honest with you."

Let me preface this by saying that I have no particular experience with or knowledge of pelvis injuries.  Nor do I wish to delve deeply into Simmonds’s pelvis to learn more.

That’s said, I can easily imagine recovering from torn muscles in the abdomen and pelvis being especially crippling to a hockey player.  Just keeping your feet moving and your legs pumping while your muscles are still healing has to slow you down and the NHL, especially nowadays, does not forgive players slowing down.

For that reason I feel good about this signing—I think we will get him back on an up year.  If it turns out he has recovered well and we want to keep him then we can resign him.  If not, no harm done, like a bunch of people have already said.  Anyway you cut it, Hughes (hell, the whole team) could use some muscle.

I agree completely.  Today’s NHL isn’t about using fighting as a deterrence like much of the golden ages (well, IMHO the golden age: ‘70s to ‘90s.... maybe up to 2003 😋).  Today it is about using the body to wear people down, knock them off the puck, etc., and when necessary lay down a hit (preferably legal) that will make people hesitate when they are on the ice.

As an aside, it is one of the things I love about the Subban trade.  He is a good hitter, maybe even the best we’ve had since Stevens retired.  At the moment I can’t think of anyone better since then....

For sure. I said the same thing when the PK trade first happened. I had high hopes for Anton Volchenkov, and he threw some nice hits as a Devil, but he never quite lived up to my hopes in that regard.

And speaking of Wayne Simmonds...

Wayne got the best of that one lol

Simmer sounds determined to prove the Devils right, same with PK and Jack. Reminds me of 2018 when we had a bunch of scrappy guys trying to prove themselves, love having a bunch of guys with chips on their shoulders coming into camp. Can't wait for October, LGD.

Remember how pissed Ty Smith was about not making last year’s team on that all access show? He’s another one.

According to Pierre McGuire the Devils were one of today’s winners with this signing.

Wow.

Yikes are we saying all of the sudden his opinion means something?  If he's right here and I hope he is it's purely by accident.

So was Gabriel, that was the highlight of show. They could not of blown more smoke up that kids ass if they tried on his way out the door. Yet he played a whole bunch of games that's how bad things were.

I have definitely warmed up to this signing.. didn't realize Simmonds was coming off of an injury last season. I think he will be able to thrive here and the type of player he is definitely fills a void since so many of our guys are on the smaller side. We haven't really had a good enforcer in a while.

And he’s more of an “enforcer plus”. I’m not saying it’s the best signing we could’ve made, but it’s a good signing.
