My uneducated guess is they let Holtby walk and they ride Samsonov and Copley into the future. i wouldn’t mind a few years of Holtby here to help take any pressure of Blackwood, but Lehner might be significantly cheaper, should he hit the market as well. Careful with Holtby...he's been pretty ordinary now over the last three seasons, including this one (.907 save% overall, .899 this year). Curious to see how much he gets as a UFA...especially term. He may very well take a one-year "bet on himself" kind of contract, if he doesn't get hot and can't pull his numbers up. 1 hour ago, NJDfan1711 said: A few years ago I would've loved to take a stab at Backstrom, but he's 32, and I feel like he could start to decline in the near future. I wouldn't necessarily turn Holtby down, but I also don't have a problem with riding Blackwood and Domingue in tandem - I know many were not impressed with Domingue early on, but he's certainly looked more competent recently, and Blackwood should be getting the lion's share of the starts from here on out, so really anyone we put back there just needs to be decent (and not expensive), so I'm not sure Holtby would be a great fit for that role. Agree that I very much want to see what the Devils have in Blackwood (we just don't have a large enough sample size yet to really know, but overall I do like his upside). I think Domingue on an iffy team (like this one) will be about a .900ish guy...up and down. Just not a guy who you can really count on from start-to-start. For all we know, this past weekend might have been the highlight of his Devils career.
Devilsfan118 3,051
Caps re-up Backstrom for some serious dough. Must mean Holtby is gone this off-season. Thoughts on the Devils going after him? Proven winner, though I'm sure he's benefitted from playing on great teams but I don't think he's as average as Crawford. Devilsfan118 3,051
In other news, Panarin is now 3rd in the NHL in points. Big yikes for us. Rags danced right around us in the rebuild game, didn't they?

They are currently a 7th-place team...Panarin was obviously a killer grab, but doesn't mean that greener pastures are right around the corner just yet. One advantage that they'll always have is their brand...they can suck for 10 straight years and there will STILL be star players happy to sign for top dollar for play for an Original 6 team in NYC. It is what it is...and as we've seen, that doesn't always pay off. Devils will probably never have that kind of sex appeal to many players (and there's other teams in that boat with us), but as we well know, that doesn't mean that the Devils can't ever win. Just gotta nail those draft picks.

Colorado Rockies 1976 6,897
Cory Schneider talks about joining the team on the road after his call-up from Binghamton. “It’s great. Obviously, a lot has changed since I’ve been here. You can feel the energy, the guys are playing well. I’m excited to be back in the NHL and start with a clean slate.” https://twitter.com/NJDevils Well no offense Cory, but that makes one of us... 1

At least Zajac is still playing well... Will be stunned if Cory's not bought out at season's end. Devils will have nearly $4 million in dead money next year (the final season of Cam's last dead money + Kovy's recapture + Cory's dead money)...then $2,250,000 the next three years (Kovy + Cory). Can't see this being an issue, as it's really hard to imagine the Devils being up against the cap anytime soon. MrBreeze 80
Nico Hischier has replaced Kyle Palmieri as the New Jersey Devils’ representative for the 2020 NHL All-Star Game. (Palmieri suffered an injury blocking a shot during the Devils’ upset win over the Lightning on Sunday.)
