Devils 2019-20 Lineup/Notes Thread

I have no idea what anyone on last night’s fourth line brings to the table. I’m so tired of Miles Wood. Jack clearly had his legs and looked decent defensively next to Coleman. Any other coach would’ve ridden the hot hand and played him more.

You wanna bet Hynes doesn't make any roster changes for tonight's game?

I'm hoping at least Zacha is dressed.  Boqvist too if possible.

But in other news - Simmonds looks bad, guys.  Really, really slow.

Was it @MB3 that predicted he'd be a healthy scratch by December?  Yikes, seems to be trending that way.

Simmonds doesn’t look that bad to me so far. The player who looks very slow is Gusev. When I see him skate I find myself wondering how he dominated the big rink KHL with his lack of speed. Hopefully he’s not as slow as he looks and he’s just finding his legs and game on the small rink.

I don't think he's been very slow, but I think what you're seeing is that when he plays with our fastest players, his lack of speed is emphasized. He's got the skills he just doesn't have the explosiveness on his blades. We knew that coming in - the question was, "How will it translate?" So far, the results have not been great.

What i noticed with Gusev is that he's attempting the toedrag deke 48 times every game.

Yeah, this. He looks ok to me. Effort is there.

So some things to take away tonight in the midst of everyone burning the house down:

Hughes continues to improve in huge strides game by game. Tonight he continued to create offense, avoided big hits, played a lot better without the puck, and was confident enough to play a little more aggressive in all situations. He really attacked the puck tonight, and it was good to see. Hynes was completely right in his presser when he said Jack looks like he's just a step away from really starting to pile up some points.

Nikita Gusev is best used, for now, as we was tonight: in limited minutes and in favorable situations, namely as a powerplay specialist. He's worth having on the ice for his offensive prowess, I just hope his defense can improve over time. He was used intelligently tonight and though I barely noticed him on the ice, I also didn't notice him fvck up either. That was new.

I thought Wayne Simmonds had his best game as a Devil yet. He was an imposing force in the offensive zone. 12-4. That was the Devils [5v5] CF-CA for the game with him on the ice.

I thought Carrick played a solid game out there tonight. I thought he showed some creativity with the puck.

I'd like Rooney to sit for Boqvist Saturday. Whether Boston is a big, tough team or not, Rooney isn't doing enough to make himself a must-have in the lineup. Of course, it means Zacha would have to go back to center. So, here are my suggested lines:

Hall-Hischier-Palms

Wood-Zajac-Bratt

Coleman-Hughes-Simmonds

Boqvist-Zacha-Gusev

Good observations, particularly about Carrick, he played very well.

And I thought Hughes looked good skating with Zacha.

I agree it was better than expected. But if Boqvist comes in, Zacha has to go back to 4th line center.

At this point, I think Hughes has played well enough to maybe trade one of his linemates out for someone more skilled - at least for some shifts. Which means that Boqvist should be able to slot into the lineup now next to guys like Simmonds or Zacha in place of Hughes. Hynes recognized that Jack was ready to be let out a little yesterday - the problem is, his answer was to put him back with Gusev. I mean, oy, that just doesn't work. Palmieri or Coleman. Honestly, even Wood is a better choice for Hughes than Gusev.

Oh and Rooney should be banned from Prudential Center. Nice guy though.

I was thinking the same thing. Keep Zacha with Hughes because he’s good defensively and give them Palmieri on the right. Make it the second line. Hughes needs someone who can finish and besides having Gusev on his line, which proved to be too much of a liability defensively, he hasn’t played with much skill. I propose these line changes:

Hall-Hischier-Gusev

Zacha-Hughes-Palmieri

Bratt-Zajac-Boqvist

Wood-Coleman-Simmonds

Or just throw the Hail Mary and rotate Hughes and Hischier out on the 1st and 2nd lines.

Also, for what it's worth:

GP   /   G   /   A   /   P   /   +/-

15   /   0   /   5   /   5   /     -5

That's the combined statline for our three first overall picks so far.  Time to start playing like first overall picks.

Yet people keep saying how great Nico has played. Ok, sure. Nobody on the offensive side has looked great.

Nico has been the best of the bad then. And there’s more to the game (especially for a center) than putting the puck in the net. He’s been fine.

If you mean “fine” in that he hasn’t been a liability when nearly everyone else has, then I agree.

Image result for kind of gif

1C needs to generate offense.

We don't need Nico to become another Zajac.

He does need to. So does Hall, Subban, Hughes...

Our defense also needs to not be straight trash, our goalies need to let in less that 3-4 goals once in a while, etc.

Not sure if the place to say it, I get he’s 18, I get he needs time, I get he needs to develop, but I would really, really like to see Hughes get his first point, please.

Stop letting Zacha do all the heavy lifting himself!

On a more somber note, Chicago won. The Devils are officially the only team without a win.
