I think your window may be wrong. Maybe ownership wasn't looking at what's happened since 2015, and they are instead unhappy with what has happened since 2018. Which is understandable. The build seemed to stall a bit and maybe they were expecting a better team since that playoff run.

But I still think ownership wanted Laviolette, Shero said no, so they said goodbye

yeah maybe but to be fair this season was the first season where we could maybe consider being competitive. And even then it was a stretch cause most playoffs team stayed the same or got better outside of colombus.. and many teams not in the playoffs also got better.

Being a GM has so much luck involved.

I mean look at Lou now... he took the job in NY... failed to sign their franchise player (not really his fault to be fair but if you look at results... that's what it is).... then let his captain make it to free agency risking to lose him for nothing... that's not a "good decision". Turns out he re-signed cause he wanted to stay there but still a reckless approach. Then the Stanley Cup winning coach decided to take on another challenge... only a few teams needed a coach and he went there.

Now the team is better without tavares somehow. It's really not because of something incredible he did

To be fair, when Trotz was asked "why the Islanders" in an interview, he said "when Lou calls, you answer the phone." It wasn't like he just lucked into him.

Yeah, i still dont think the timing makes sense, which is why I'm guessing there has to be something else.

That 14/15 roster put up 78 points.

this 19/20 roster is on pace for about 72 points.

over half that roster is retired now.

Having a young core learning and trending up > having the oldest core in the league, not making the playoffs and trending down.

It's an easy decision

I would love Laviolette, but he isn’t gonna come here without a full-time GM in place.

It may have just been a final straw. Again this is just speculation by me. Theres no rumors I've read. It just seems strange an hour before a game that there wasn't some sort of catalyst that lead to this happening now and not tomorrow morning.

Trending up!?!?!  We've gotten worse!  And we have been "trending up" since 17/18 but the results don't reflect that.

Well that's just saying the "right thing" in interviews. Trotz could have stayed with his team. He decided to move on, he wasn't fired. And the islanders needed a coach. That's pretty lucky.

As I’ve said multiple times I did like Shero, and I wasn’t even close to being ready to replace him, but I do understand why this happened. I’m at the point it didn’t really piss me off. Which is telling.

I think if you’re being objective you can admit if you take Nico and Hughes out of the picture our future would be looking very grim. Shero did some good things, it just wasn’t quite enough.

But you can’t take Nico and Hughes out of the equation because then Shero would likely build his roster and core differently

You can't make a strong case for Shero based on the results but I don't like it. He inherited an abyss of a franchise I felt like he at least had the right strategy in going about the rebuild. Made some excellent trades, some didn't work out. His drafting seems mediocre but I'm concerned about what's next

Three key kids in the NHL progressing should be more than enough, but you can also look at the kids down in Bingo.

Yup the last (or nearly last) place Bing players make me excited.

exactly zero players in Bing are difference makers.

The progression of our young players that we are rebuilding around?

Which young players are progressing well right now? Nico and....

not too long ago we were talking about literally everyone on the team except Coleman regressing.

It's hard to believe that you have no hate towards Lou when you can't bring yourself to give him even a shred of credit when it comes to turning the Islanders around.

The fact is that a lot of us liked what Shero was doing but clearly ownership didn't. The cupboard was bare and now it's slightly less bare, which is great. Regardless, something must have occurred to go from beating the best team in the east 5-1 and then firing your GM 45 minutes before a game.

It's gotta be more than just what he's done since 2015 for him to be out tonight and not out tomorrow morning or afternoon.

I don’t even know what ‘difference maker’ means but I’m realizing now that your argument is centering around having the next Nikita kucherov and Connor mcdavid in Bingo, so this is another overly-emotive reaction to unrealistic expectations.

Decision was made and right now I don't care if it's fair to Shero... If he deserve or it's a shame (I think it's a shame but again... I don't care for now)

I'm really scared for what come next? I so not see Marty being good as this job....

Please no Marty!

I don’t understand why people are so against this. If he sucks he sucks. It’s not going to hurt having to replace him as much as it did seeing him play in another jersey.

He could become our Sakic though...

Marty’s been around a winning culture almost his whole career.
