Ray Shero and Devils Part Ways Effective Immediately

Because any one of us posters here would have picked Nico and Hughes #1 overall because we won a lotto. That didn't take any skill or real knowledge of anything.

I’ll give Shero credit for going Nico over Patrick, but every GM in the league would have picked Hughes over Kakko. Idc what anyone says.

it has to be that the owners wanted to tank and no real GM would do it.

So we're going with a job posting that starts with "Must be willing to tank!"

very comforting, I mean what could go wrong?

only the most experience tankers need apply.

Our two best young players are in the NHL making the core of what will be built around.

Who we lucked into lol.  I am not saying they aren't helping, but like we bash Lou for lucking into Mathews when he was in Toronto I'm not going to pretend Ray landing Nico and Jack are anything but luck.

Looks like Shero sent Fitzgerald down to the bench to diagnose the problems with team and he came back to the owners and told them the problem is Ray Shero.

I can give him credits for doing what any GM would have done if they needed a coach and call the stanley cup winning goal who wants to take on another challenge. You wouldn't have done the same? lol

A GM letting his captain walk right after losing his franchise player is simply not a smart move. He's lucky Lee wanted to stay there in the end.

Then just for fun swap Zacha for Barzal and the Islanders are not that successful. It's all luck to some extent

So Lou took over the Islanders with the worst defense in the league. In one year they were one of the best defensive teams and won a playoff round. This is all luck to an extent.

Ray took over a very old uninspiring team. In 5 years and 42 draft picks and 35 trades, it is still a fairly uninspiring team, though one with an admittedly slightly better farm system. I like Shero, and I defended Shero plenty. But there just wasn't enough improvement from the end of 2017-2018 until now.

Luck or not (Which Nico was not. Lou would’ve drafted Nolan), they were our first round picks those two years. You can’t complain about having a lack of good young players while ignoring the two best ones we have (who btw will be perennial all stars for many years to come). You’re essentially saying, ‘Shero has drafted poorly, look at the passed five years minus two first rounders.’ How is that fair to judge any GM?

Given the owners‘ history with the sixers, they likely wanted to keep selling off players to tank.

I'm with you for most of this, because when you are assessing things you have to include ALL of the young talent no matter where they were drafted, but we have no way of knowing the bolded.

And let's not forget Bratt who was a 6th round pick who stepped right into the NHL. That's impressive.

Also Shero got us Hall which is the reason we made the playoffs.

We just had 2 guys winning gold in juniors. We use to have no players or 1 playing in the world juniors.

Quick someone please gets Fitz some Depends ASAP.  After watching him just talk he's clearly sh!tting his pants.

Going full Trump strategy here, full interms across the board.

just heard the owner talk... based on what they said i'm scared they have the same logic some fans here have... they can only look at results and absolutely ignore context. Which is the worst possible way to look at things

My speculation re Lou but my point was that Nico was no consensus pick. Glad Shero was wise enough to pick him.

Well on their way to the third consecutive playoff birth; playoff series wins in consecutive seasons and took the eventual champion Raptors to 7 games (who needed a buzzer beater to end it)... that’s the way.

I think some very poor recent decision making has cost Ray his Job. I think this comes down to Ray taking too long to right the wrongs of the early season and basically wanting to burn another year and ownership not agreeing.

Not firing Hynes early into this season I think got ownerships back up. The fact that the team has looked much improved in recent weeks had actually cost Ray I think.

His reluctance to deal with Cory in a timely manner hurt the team as well.

The whole Hall situation was a horrible mess, ownership can't have been pleased with losing one of the biggest draws to the team for not much return.

It will all come out in the wash and Ray will 100% find another gig. He is IMO a good GM. But in sport I don't think you get to make that many fvck ups in quick succession without consequences. Ray has paid the price for all of his missteps coming in a 5 month span.

They were historically bad for MANY years to get there though. Hopefully there’s a more efficient and prideful way to get there.

One of my favorite Ray moves for sure, as I was all about Patrick and I was very very wrong

Your logic is also that half a decade isn't a very long time.

I don't catch any Ranger games out here in CA.

How has Kakko looked this season in relation to Hughes?   Curious to hear some insight here...

You can’t be evaluating this season strictly based on points when we are REBUILDING.

That's exactly what the owners just called out though, not winning.   So my question to them is what is it then? They can't have it both ways.

Bad should be in Hartford, invisible and showing no signs of coming on. And I was a Kakko guy.

Which is why the firing was completely ridiculous and unfair. The team has been winning lately.

Thats because i understand context.

5 years is a long time to pick a movie on Netflix but to rebuild a team from the team in 2015 with no assets... its not long tho
