If he actually has to retire, I think his recapture pentalty would be the only I’d feel bad about. The dude plays balls out day in and day out, hasn’t tried to cheat the system, and neither has Montreal.

if that makes sense at all

I bet they end up waiving the recapture penalty in this case.   The rule was made after the fact and the Flyers were the ones who wrote the contract.  The intent was never to bury a team like Nashville with a 20 some million cap hit for literally just keeping their own superstar.   They did nothing wrong here.

Edit: I just read the article and I guess the recapture penalty has come down now that he's played more years.  I still don't think they saddle Nashville with this.

Well, aside from his complete backstab to Nashville for signing that rediculous Philly offer sheet. But I don't care about Nashville anyway, fuq them.

Problem is though it burns Montreal and not the Preds (I think)

EDIT: I was wrong (shocking!). It burns the Preds for almost $5m. Save your body Shea!

No it’s not. Don’t trade a 30 year old who’s signed for ELEVEN more fvcking years without understanding what would happen if he retired early.

Reaping what you sow when you hand out a fourteen year contract seems perfectly fair to me.

Meh. I think it’s ridiculous. Also that was an offer sheet they matched nine years ago, so they can thank Philly for that.

They've been good for a bit. However, take a look at that list: Maybe with the exception of Boston and Caps, all those those other places are either close to or major night life hubs. Russians love their partying

But that’s what I don’t get.  Since when is New Jersey not close to major hubs, night life, etc?   I don’t mean this as a critique of you Carp, this is a common theme, but why?  NJ has the Shore, A.C., is near the Poconos, and is spitting distance from NY or Philly, depending on what end you’re at.  One of the things I have always loved about being from Trenton is that I can get to almost anything I want within an hour or so but my home prices are fairly reasonable and traffic is hardly an issue except for maybe 20 minutes a day.  Living in  N. Jersey you’d get a version of this as well in regard to NYC.  So I don’t get it.  Unless you’re living above a damn night club or need a casino injected directly into your bloodstream why the hell is NYC or BOS any more desirable?

Maybe I’m just too much of a Jerseyan to see?

It's probably not just location but also trajectory. These players didn't grow up hearing about Jersey as much as they did these other teams.

Dude, sports media barely even mentioned us when we were winning cups.

Patrik Elias' blind centering pass to Jason Arnott for the cup winning goal in 2 OT of game 6 was a thing of beauty, but the NHL prefers to show clips of Mark Messier bobbing his big dumb head when he is given the cup and Ray Bourque hoisting the cup as major historical moments.

These guys who are in the league now who are free agents were growing up when we owned everyone and everything. It would be impossible to follow hockey in those days and not know who the Devils were, whether you loved them or hated them. That’s a fact.

And how was NJ portrayed in the sports media? Boring team, trap, trap trap, clutch and grab era. We also didn't have any big time flashy players. Starting in 05-06 any other players were completely overshadowed by Crosby and Ovechkin. In addition, NJ always had a reputation of expecting defense first from all their players. It may not have been a desirable destination for someone who is known for being a point producer. In the past 8 years or so the only player I heard of that wanted to come here was Marek Zidlicky and that was because of the Devils' defensive reputation.

People want to play for a winner. If the Devils start winning, people will wanna come here. Bottom line.
