SterioDesign
im happy to read that they are changing the rules for the draft to only 2 lottery winners every draft but also that you can't win more than twice within 5 years.. also not jump more than 10 spots. But the best part is that it's not taken in consideration lottery winners before 2022 so we're good! haha
jagknife
So apparently a ref, Tim Peel, was caught on hot mic saying “I know it wasn’t much, but I wanted to call a penalty against Nashville early....” during the Wings-Preds game. It cut off as the broadcast went to commercial break. You can hear who I assume is Kelly Sutherland’s (I think) side of the exchange, but I’m not turning my volume up to try and listen this early in the morning. People (Preds fans at a minimum) are losing their collective sh!t over it. But, in typical DBA fashion, here’s his response: if it was us, I’d probably be furious, Fan or coach perspective. But since it’s his team, I find it hysterical. I’m also wondering, since it happened in the second period, we’re the Preds playing a chippy game and they wanted to get it back under control, cause in that type of context, it would make sense for him to say something like that. I didn't watch that game but they showed some highlights after the Devils game last night and the game did look a lot more chippy than normal so the refs getting the game under control is most likely what he was talking about but at the same time Tim Peel has been probably the absolute worst ref every season for years now so I wouldn't be surprised either way. They were talking about this on the WFAN this morning...yeah, Peel was talking about how Nashville had gotten away with too much as the first period ended, so he wanted to reign them back in. 2 hours ago, jagknife said: So apparently a ref, Tim Peel, was caught on hot mic saying “I know it wasn’t much, but I wanted to call a penalty against Nashville early....” during the Wings-Preds game. I'm not sure this is fully applicable in this case (knowing what we know now), but one thing that ALWAYS drove me batsh!t about Hynes is that he never once lost his sh!t when his team was getting screwed over by the refs...and let's face it, the Devils dealt with their fair share of bad calls during his time here (especially missed high sticks). Just once I wanted him to lose his sh!t and really let them have it...not that it would've made some major difference, or that I expecting him ever to go full Ftorek, but just to let them know that he had finally had enough. But no, just more and more of that singular (almost passive) DBA facial expression. Edited March 24, 2021 by Colorado Rockies 1976
Devs3cups
So apparently, Tim Peel will no longer officiate games in the NHL because of last night's incident. Which, imo, is a total joke. Pure PR stunt by the league. "Equal" or "Balanced" officiating has been going on for YEARS. The league knows this and most definitely wants it there. It's basically part of the game at this point. So is the NHL going to fire every ref who's done it? Hypocrisy at its finest.
Rock
Everyone knows they do it so why say it out loud miked up? Apparently Peel was retiring next month. I don't know if NHL refs have a retirement package, he may have just lost it. If true it makes him more of a dumb ass!

He's getting fired because he's got a big mouth, not because of what he did. Everyone knows it happens. It's like greasing Palms in Washington... Eveyone knows it happens, but it's totally different when you get caught.

This way they act like they did something but you know. I really dont think its much. Very often refs will have make up calls and try to balance things if they can, this sounds like thats what it was

I mean it doesn't make the "equal" calling right, but for to league to just pretend they don't know what's going on by pulling this just comes off as weird imo. Sacrificial lamb is the perfect way to put it. Edited March 24, 2021 by Devs3cups
jagknife
If Peel is indeed retiring at seasons end, all they did was take him off the ice sooner. It doesn’t say fired, so guess he’ll still get his beni’s

Colorado Rockies 1976
I can't write him off at this point in his career...but man has it gone downhill for Hall after starting the season with 6 points in his first 3 GP. Just 1 G and 10 A in 28 GP since. I'll beat mfitz to the punch...of course, Hughes also started off his season with 6 points in 3 GP, and has since put up 10 in 27 GP. It does help that Hughes at least finds the back of the net on occasion (7 goals)...it's insane that Hall has just two goals this year. I bring this up because in general, I think a lot of us feel like Hughes has played better than his point total...and that it feels like the opportunities that he's creating will (hopefully) eventually lead to better glamour numbers in time...and of course, he has time on his side. Since I don't have the luxury of watching all of Hall's games, I just wonder if he's simply been that insanely unlucky this year...is he also doing a lot of good things that just aren't being rewarded? He's gotta be going through one of the most baffling stretches of his career.
mfitz804
For the record (not that you are saying otherwise), I totally agree that Hughes has played better than his point total, and that was never my point. I’m still encouraged by his growth.

He's just too good for that.

Man there truly is a stat for everything 23% threat swing per ineffectivemath? Those are some fancy ass colors though. Ineffectivemath is what I specialized in all during hs and college. Nicomo in no way is this a shot at you, just pointing out truly how far the analytics have come. Personally I'm just not sure it's a good thing and often times some of this stuff doesn't mean a whole lot. I think like with most numbers inside and outside of hockey if you dig deep enough you can find some way to show them in a way that proves whatever angle you want.
