Ha, remember the days when Tim Murray was getting credit for doing such a good job tearing the Sabres down, collecting assets and tanking for McDavid/Eichel?   That sh!t is the easy part.  What an absolute sh!t show in Buffalo.

What I dont understand in this case is that Eichel want that specific surgery, that would requirer a shorter recovery time. The main reason the team is not up for it is that it's apparently a semi-experimental with not much testing to back it up. So at this point im obviously not a doctor and don't have an opinion on what he should do.

But them slowing things down i don't get it.

So are they just... actually caring about his well being and truly want the safest surgery for HIM no matter what?

Do they worry that teams wouldn't give them as much if he goes through with that surgery?

Is there actually teams willing to trade for him but won't if he gets that surgery?

I mean if they will trade him and that this is the surgery he wants. At some point it's not their problem. They gave their opinion on it and it should be his decision at the end of the day.

My question is this: what the fvck are they going to do? Obviously you don’t want to trade him for peanuts, but also the team that would be trading for him has to know that he most likely isn’t going to play because he wants to have a risky neck surgery.

does it get to a point where the NHL has to step in with their own specialist to weight on the case?

Or is Eichel just hell bent on getting THAT surgery and goes around seeing other doctors and just bring up the ones who said what he wanted to hear? who fvcking knows

I don’t know where I fall on this one. Part of me thinks he should be allowed to make his own medical decisions, and part of me knows the team has a vested interest in his health.

I think Jack's concern about his health trumps the Sabres. He will be the one who has to live his life with his spine and neck issues.

Yeah it's hard to really have an opinion when you're not aware of the data.

Like if we have some sort of bigger picture like...

a) that surgery would take 2 months to recover. But there's only a 70% chance that it fixes the problem long term and if it doesn't work well the problem will surely come back, based on 400 cases.

b) the other surgery would take 10 months to heal completely but recovery rates are like 95% based on 7500 cases.

Then you can kiiiind of have a more educated opinion about the case. Not that what i think about it is any important though.

Yeah, but then it might be a case of a player who just want to get back out there ASAP and not thinking long term. We all know (myself included) stubborn people who played through injuries that could have bad long term effects if things went bad...

Funny story. About 10 years ago i cracked 3 ribs playing soccer. a few hours before the next game that was a few days later i went to the hospital hoping to get some sort of pain killer so that i could play. It took so long that i went through triage but my game was starting soon and then i was playing midfield, i was captain, i was coaching and everything so i had to be there so i told the nurse i had to go but that i'd be back. She wouldnt let me leave and i was trying to be nice making excuses why i had to leave until she got so bitchy i straight up told her that i had to go play a game. She just wouldnt let me, saying i could rupture a lung or something if it was bad and i was just like "Well wtv you guys just had to see me sooner ive been here for hours" and left. Went to the pharmacy store and grabbed some pain relief pills and went to the game. And OF COURSE, i got nailed HARD right in the chest again lolol Had to go back to the hospital and man... the smile on her face when she saw me in pain. I just had to laugh and give it to her.

I get that. But also, they’re paying him millions of dollars and they probably don’t want him to risk his health. I’m not saying they should get to despise and fvck what a Jack thinks, by any means, but still.

Maybe this will spark something in the next CBA-- or they add something to new contracts about wanting experimental surgeries that are not approved by team doctors or some neutral 3rd party with the appropriate medical expertise.

I’m not sure that a team paying a guy millions of dollars should have to agree to him having surgery not approved by the FDA. But then again, the guy should get to make his own medical decisions.

It’s right on the line, in my opinion.

I'm not saying that he should be barred from the surgery. It's his body and he should do what he thinks is best.

Because the team isn't on board with the surgery and it is experimental, I think they should have some recourse contractually should the outcome be unfavorable...especially if their medical resources are saying it is a bad idea. When they signed him to the contract it is unlikely any of them anticipated he would elect to have a part of his spine replaced with a piece of titanium, especially if there is a "better" option. I am not sure how one could forsee/reduce the risk of a player doing something seen as "risky" like that to their body after you make such a hefty financial investment in their future as an athlete.

I think there is a reasonable assumption that the player acts in their own best interest to keep them playing at a high level-- which is beneficial for both parties. What if, for the sake of absurd argument, there was an elective experimental eye surgery that Eichel wanted because Drs told him he'd be able to see the puck better or something, but Buffalo was like "WTF you can't be serious, Jack. This is stupid as hell". Should buffalo be strapped for 7 years with a half blind Eichel because he got a surgery that everyone who worked for the team told him was a stupid idea?

*I put better and risky in quotes because I'm not trying to imply I think I know what the best option is. I have no idea.

So whats the deal with signing bernier? How does this impact Blackwood. Why 2 years.

I like the move, im hoping Blackwood responds to the competition and we can sell off for a first rounder at the deadline. Essentially buying a 1st rounder. If blackie chokes, were hedged for two year to revisit the position

We need to have a suitable backup, especially because Blackwood does have a tendency to get injured where he misses a few games. I am happy that we aren’t just surrendering those games by having Bernier.

It’s more of a 1A-1B situation, than a 1-2.  Wedge is the insurance policy (and is being paid like one).  Mac obviously has the inside track on getting more starts, but if he falters/slumps/gets hurt, Bernier is plenty capable of picking up the slack…as Crawford was supposed to have been, before calling it quits.

Barring injuries, I can see them finishing within 10 starts of each other very easily.

I think that makes sense. The days of a guy starting 90% of games are mostly over. And obviously Blackwood isn’t durable enough to do that.

I would be in favor of a 60-40 split in favor of Blackwood, maybe 55-45.

Re bolded: the FDA hasn’t approved a lot of things going on right now, just saying

Yeah... I definitely risked it there

All I'm getting at is the FDA isn't the make-or-break, regardless of what side you stand on, if you even pick sides.

I'm with Jack on this one, mainly cause its the Sabres. The surgery worked for whatever MMA fighter to return to the octagon. I'd argue the punishment they endure in one match/training is comparable.
