Man that guy just doesn't move the needle at all. 6th round pick who's hasn't even played 100 career games yet as a 23 year old. Don't we have enough 3rd line wingers?

He again mentions the Devils when discussing Boeser. That's something I'd love to get done.

When I saw the score this morning this post came to mind. 🤣

Based on last night’s performance, a few brain cells I’m sure 🥴 😉

80’s style game 🤣

I think the Red Wings won one of their season openers 10-7, in the 80s…I remember Sam St. Laurent was the goalie.  Think they might have beat Calgary.

Was that the last time anyone saw Sam St Laurent? Asking for a friend.

The KHL is in trouble with the Ukraine crisis. Lost Jokerit of Finland and now Dynamo Riga. Currently they are pretendin nothing is happening.

Losing those teams won't be the end of the league by any means.

IIHF also meeting about the location of the 2023 world cup and WJC as both were due to be held in Russia. Will also decide if they can play in the rescheduled WJC this summer.

The bad news:  on the surface, Lafreniere of the Rangers appears to be heating up:  5 G in his last 9 GP.

The very good news:  at the moment, not much points to this being remotely sustainable...he's only managed 16 SOG over these 9 GP (2 SOG or less in seven of those games), and is shooting 31.3%.  These are the kinds of numbers that can make grinders (or Andreas Johnsson-types) look good over short samples, but things tend to even out fairly quickly for guys fattening up on high shooting%s.

So even though at quick glance it might seem like Lafreniere is starting to figure things out...talk to me when he's actually racking up SOG.

By contrast, Jack Hughes has 12 G in his last 21 GP...he's shot 14.1% on 85 SOG.  He'll have to make some more adjustments as he becomes more and more of a marked man, but these numbers are PLENTY close to sustainable...he'll go through a slump here and there, but this guy should absolutely continue to be an offensive force most of the time from here on out, as long as he's healthy, and not being asked to carry stiffs with him on the wings.

I do like that he hasn't appeared to take any major strides forward just yet:

Alexis Lafreniere Stats | Hockey-Reference.com

2020-21:  1.19 shots per game

2021-22:  1.31 shots per game

Almost exactly the same amount of ice time per game per season as well.  And only 13 assists in 108 GP to date?

I'm curious to see if he's able to show significant improvement in Year 3 (Age 21 season).

And just for the hell of it, Lafreniere vs. Hughes through 108 GP

Lafreniere:  25 G, 13 A, 38 Pts, 1.25 SPG, 18.5 shooting%

Hughes:  18 G, 35 A, 53 Pts, 2.30 SPG, 7.3 shooting%

Didn't even bother with +/- because one team clearly has MUCH better goaltending than the other.

This isn't an attempt to build up Lafreniere in any way, more just doing some recon on the enemy.  What was great in Jack's case is that even with some struggles in both Year 1 and Year 2 of his career, there were things to build off:  he was setting up opportunities that others weren't finishing, he was already getting a respectable amount of SOG, and his shooting% only figured to improve with time and experience.  There was plenty of reason to hope, even with the obvious rough edges on display, and Hughes clearly went to a team that was drafting #1 overall for a reason (because the Devils were lousy)...he got significant ice team right away and much more of it in his second year (over 19 minutes per game), which hasn't been the case with Lafreniere.  And of course not like the Devils had always done right by Hughes initially (having him play wing, for example).

Like Nicomo noted, Lafreniere is playing on a team with considerable talent already...guess one can make the argument that the Rangers have the luxury of bringing him along more slowly (he ranks 8th in ice time among Ranger forwards and is getting less than 14 minutes per game), but if he stops converting the limited chances he's getting at such a high rate, what semi-respectable numbers he's managed to date will drop off...and make the Ranger faithful plenty restless I would imagine.
