I do like that he hasn't appeared to take any major strides forward just yet:

Alexis Lafreniere Stats | Hockey-Reference.com

2020-21:  1.19 shots per game

2021-22:  1.31 shots per game

Almost exactly the same amount of ice time per game per season as well.  And only 13 assists in 108 GP to date?

I'm curious to see if he's able to show significant improvement in Year 3 (Age 21 season).

And just for the hell of it, Lafreniere vs. Hughes through 108 GP

Lafreniere:  25 G, 13 A, 38 Pts, 1.25 SPG, 18.5 shooting%

Hughes:  18 G, 35 A, 53 Pts, 2.30 SPG, 7.3 shooting%

Didn't even bother with +/- because one team clearly has MUCH better goaltending than the other.

This isn't an attempt to build up Lafreniere in any way, more just doing some recon on the enemy.  What was great in Jack's case is that even with some struggles in both Year 1 and Year 2 of his career, there were things to build off:  he was setting up opportunities that others weren't finishing, he was already getting a respectable amount of SOG, and his shooting% only figured to improve with time and experience.  There was plenty of reason to hope, even with the obvious rough edges on display, and Hughes clearly went to a team that was drafting #1 overall for a reason (because the Devils were lousy)...he got significant ice team right away and much more of it in his second year (over 19 minutes per game), which hasn't been the case with Lafreniere.  And of course not like the Devils had always done right by Hughes initially (having him play wing, for example).

Like Nicomo noted, Lafreniere is playing on a team with considerable talent already...guess one can make the argument that the Rangers have the luxury of bringing him along more slowly (he ranks 8th in ice time among Ranger forwards and is getting less than 14 minutes per game), but if he stops converting the limited chances he's getting at such a high rate, what semi-respectable numbers he's managed to date will drop off...and make the Ranger faithful plenty restless I would imagine.

I briefly compared Hughes and Lafreniere 2nd season. Cause i felt we should compare them at the same stage of their career and Jack still had a higher PPG average. So thats good

That's fine, but it's fair to point out that Hughes got a lot more ice time that season, than Lafreniere is currently getting (over 19 MPG for Jack and under 14 MPG for Lafreniere).

What I do like is Jack did show overall improvement in Year 2.  Based on the raw numbers, doesn't look the same can really be said for Lafreniere so far.  I like that.

Yeah Lafreniere is a strange one.

When he played for team canada junior, he was a MONSTER. He truly lead that team big time and was the best player in the tournament.

But when i went to see him play in Moncton. If it wasn't that i knew who he was and was looking for him, i wouldnt have noticed him more than any other player on the ice. He was very meh. Of course it was just one game but you'd think a first overall player would be visibly better than the rest. I remember seeing Mercer, Elhers, Meir, etc etc pop up above the rest a lot more

Speaking of Mercer...not that it matters much this early on, but gotta admit, taking some joy in the fact that in their age 20 seasons (with Mercer being a rookie no less), Mercer is having the better season than second-year Lafreniere...at times looking quite dynamic, and appears to have found his second wind to boot.  How awesome would it be if Mercer turned out to be the better player over the long haul?  heh heh

Imagine saying what that guy just said?   What a low life

It's funny, his panties got tied in a knot because of a post i had responding to you about 1 over all picks. Somehow he was insulted because he can't read.

Totally. I use to say Mercer could be our Coleman. But from what im seeing from his rookie season and assuming he'll only get better. He'll be better than Coleman

Sir, this is no place for a hockey discussion.

Also yeah Mercer seems like an absolute steal at 18th overall so far.

Yeah no kidding. He kind of fell from the calder race. But there's truly no shame in falling behind guys like Raymond, Zegras, Seider, etc etc

I do hate when there's way older guys like 26 years old Bunting or 24 years old Jeannot in the mix.

He has an incredible stick and is very smart. He may be the steal of that draft even though he was a first. Love watching that kid play

No complaints, re:  Mercer...the guy was picked 18th and the year after he was picked, both made the big club and has proven that he deserves to stay...yeah, no issue with him falling behind some former Top-10 picks for now.

BTW, Mercer's not too far behind Zegras in terms of production, in this very early going for their careers to date:  20 G and 29 A per 82 GP for Mercer, 19 G and 41 A for Zegras per 82 GP.  And Mercer's trending up...I can see him finishing with 50+ points if he plays in all 82 games (he'll need 18+ over his final 28 GP to do it).  Hell of a start for a 20-year-old who wasn't even a lock to make the team out of preseason.

Dude let me talk about Mercer and other potential calder nominees in peace

Are we including Mercer in that conversation? I thought the weeks he disappeared sealed his fate on that. Handful of guys way ahead of him now.
