I have been to all the retirement ceremonies in-person with the exception of Stevens.

The organization's retirement night for Niedermayer was a complete joke.  From the sparse/short ceremony to the "in memoriam" black number patches for the night, it was completely done in the cheap.  It was an obvious cash-grab by a broke JVB who was looking to fill seats in a mid-week game in December during the holiday season.  If the team one day decides to do Nieds right by re-doing that ceremony I would 100% be for it.

The teams does the right thing by moving us to other comparable or better seats whenever there is an issue.  In the past, it was like once or twice per season (nothing so far this year).  They definitely take care of us when this happens, so it's not something I make a big deal out of since all we do is go to guest services and get moved for that game.

I like our seats and the people we are sitting near.  We have a crazy schedule and can only get to 1/2 the games (at most).  The tickets are cheap and relatively easy to re-sell, so I haven't really looked to move.  My point simply was that the arena apparently sustained roof damage during Sandy and here we are, 9 years later, and it still hasn't been fixed.  I know for a fact that there were other roof leaks effecting other sections of the arena that were not fixed as of the 2019-20 season.  That's just 1 example of poor maintenance practices for a major facility such as this.

I understood you point, I just figured if I were sitting directly under a drip for 9 years I might try to move over a section lol. I'm not a STH, what do I know (aside from that I like my head to be dry).

I'm not sure that a ceremony to replace one seen as an obvious cash grab would not itself be seen as an obvious cash grab.

All the Devils would have to do is have fans watch video of the original ceremony to feel enough pity to not feel as though it is a cash grab.

I was there, honestly don't remember it feeling cheap at the time...I'd have to see it again.  The retirement banner with the completely screwed-up font...I have no idea what the hell THAT was about.  At least it was corrected later.

Lou had apparently always wanted to retire his jersey after Scott's career had ended, so I think it definitely a planned event (even if it was indeed done on the cheap, compared to Marty's and Elias' nights).  But yeah, like we've often discussed, VBK was most definitely one of us.  He loved the Devils and he couldn't afford to own them.

IIRC, I heard that they did use the same company as the Stevens and Daneyko banner, but they dropped the ball and used the wrong font.  It took them a few years to correct it too.

That was the only retirement ceremony where I sat in the bottom bowl.  I got the cheapest tickets I could find on SH (I think they were about $40ish) and back then they had this thing where you could "rent" an iPad for like $10 to use during the game.  Since the iPads ran on wifi only, they replaced your tickets to the one section near the router they used for them which was in sec 21.  They got rid of it after 1 or 2 seasons because people were only renting them for the same reasons as me plus they were kinda useless.  The only time I actually looked at one pretty closely was the one I rented and one of the employees left notes from their marketing meeting that week on the Notes app.

Anyways that ceremony did feel rushed and cheap.  It was just sparse on everything and felt barely anything more than one of those Doc or Chico appreciation nights they put on before.

They do frown upon little person porn being watched in the arena...

The Ken Daneyko Night was the one I remember being a complete disaster...not his actual retirement night...this was well before that.  His mic cut out for much of his speech...the Devils gave him a big projection TV (this was before the days of HDTV...that beast was probably obsolete within 3 years, easily), and a framed "half and half jersey" (one half was old red and green, the other was red and black).  Devils played Tampa that night and scored the first goal pretty early, but then lost 4-1.

It was this game:  Tampa Bay Lightning at New Jersey Devils Box Score — January 9, 2004 | Hockey-Reference.com

I could be wrong, but I remember hearing that Dano kinda-sorta thought that this was supposed to have been a jersey retirement of sorts...and was a bit surprised when it wasn't.

Admittedly this is the first time I've seen someone mention porn and yet find a way to be PC at the same time...

I am pretty sure I was at that night.  That was the one they gave out bobbleheads of him that looked nothing like him?

Would've been par for the course, heh heh (I have a Dano bobblehead that was a giveaway; it's pretty big...I gotta think that's the one that they gave away that night).  Everything about that night came off as cheap and amateur...if Dano's mic hadn't cut out, that probably would've made a considerable difference, but it still didn't feel right.  Stevens' and Dano's jersey retirements felt like they were light-years ahead by comparison.

I'd say under Lou, he wanted the first three retirement ceremonies to be as nice as possible, but had budgets in mind and probably wasn't willing to go over...with ownership's blessing.  With Marty and Elias, I think it was much closer to "Spare no expense".  I don't really have much issue with ANY of the ceremonies, for what each one was...but the ante was upped considerably (and very noticeably) for Marty and Patrik.

Honestly, Dano looks like (and has always looked like) a cartoon character, seems like a bobblehead of him should be easy.

Not that bobbleheads look anything like the people they are supposed to.

That said, the guys who made those arm waving inflatable tube guys got Bryce Salvador exactly right.

I forgot who said it (I think it may have been either Doc or Chico), but apparently the NHL sent a memo out to teams who were planning retirement nights after the Rangers Mark Messier night to not go overboard and keep time in mind.  The visiting team that night was apparently pissed that Messier night kept going on forever and they had to wait around until it was over to play.

I think that probably had a little bit to do with how things turned out as well with Stevens and Dano nights.

Heh heh yeah Messier's night was quite expectedly "over the top"...but it was impossible to think that it WOULDN'T be.

And 2024 isn't so far away...gotta think the Rangers are already planning a 30th Anniversary celebration of the 1994 team...because why wouldn't they?  And I'm sure not only will the Cup be there, but that whoever makes it from the 94 team will skate around with it, like they just won it.

I looked and it was an hour and 15 minutes long and they played the Oilers.  If I was a player for the Oilers that night I would have been pissed about standing/sitting around for that to end.

As for anniversary nights, I 100% expect the Devils to do a 20th anniversary night of the 2003 team next season.

I could live with the bolded because the Devils haven't ever shamelessly celebrated any of their Cup wins over and over again (or looked for any excuse to do so).  There's dopey Ranger fans who STILL insist that 1994 must bother Devils fans to this very day, and that by not winning the Cup in 2012 after knocking off the Rangers in the ECF, that somehow that 1994 "demon" has still not been exorcised.  A big chunk of that fanbase thinks that one Cup is somehow so much important than any Cup wins before and after...it will always be the dumbest fanbase in the NHL, AFAIC.

I missed Elias' ceremony in person...had already booked a Disney cruise.  That's the only one I missed.  The ceremonies got better and better as they went...Brodeur's and Elias' ceremonies were first-class events, all the way.

EDIT:  Duh, I missed Stevens' as well.  A source fell through, and I simply couldn't afford it at the time.  Went to Dano's, Nieds', and Marty's.

i made the last 3. Elias was my only lower bowl one but I’d agree they definitely got better as they went. I don’t remember Neids much other than that the banner was raised right in front of the section I was in so that was cool. Marty’s felt like they really went all out with good reason and then they kept it going for Patty.

I really hope the next one is in about 20 or so years because this group does something special enough for a retired jersey

The 200s look like they are gonna be a ghost town tomorrow, ridiculous they are charging $50+ plus fees for some of the highest seats in the place.

Thank you YankeeNets for introducing variable pricing to try and snag more money out of the public for higher demand games, dicks

I had missed this email cause it was labeled about NJ train passes but here's an fyi for any season ticket holders who want this. Personally I wouldn't bother with worrying about remembering to bring any cards and I'd just wear a mask through security anyway...
