Holtz called up

Seems like a bit of a desperation move to me, trying to get the team going. Didn't expect them to make it so early in the season.

He earned the call. He’s been tearing the AHL apart. Plus none of these other gibronis are scoring with any regularity, so I’m good with it.

I felt the two people doing the broadcast were terrible. The chick, and the guy.  They had little emotion and pretty awful flow to the game.

Yeah that was Leah Hextall and Kevin Weekes. Both are better in studio roles for sure.

It's not a reflection on him and what he has been doing at all.

But it wasn't long ago that we were extolling the virtues of finally being able to give young guys a chance to learn the ropes in the AHL and not rushing people.

What I don't want to do is sacrifice Holtz's future to give this bunch of wankers as kick up the arse now.

Holtz will probably only be here for a few games. I doubt he sticks around long. We have injuries which make it evident for him to be up, but I don't think the plan is to have him here until the end of the year. Management and Ruff were pretty adamant on him developing his game in Utica for different reasons. I don't think a few games here will rush him or be bad for him, quite the contrary.

Holtz turns 20 in January, so I wouldn’t exactly call it rushing him. Plenty of guys from that draft outside the obvious ones like Laf and Stutzle are now in the NHL (including Mercer), and playing well. His countryman Raymond has been tearing it up for example.

Plus at this rate (5 G in 4 GP) he looks too good to be down there.

This. And if they feel he's out of place and struggling, they'll just send him down again. Holtz is still young, and players develop to their own pace.

$70 for a one year subscription. Not too bad.

I have streamed for free since 2011 and never had an issue...Not that I don't think 70$ isn't worth it.

Even while you guys were saying you had issues the other night for services you paid for, I had no issues. The only caveat is that you need to run it through your pc to your TV I guess.

I'm not buying the injuries excuse. Unless there is some moving around at center our top 6 wingers are all fit and healthy, they are just playing like sh!t. This is to give the team a boost.

Lafrenier is currently on the rangers 4th line as of practice today and there have been issues with him this season and his all round game. Stutzle is another level. Only 14 players from that draft have seen game time in the NHL and 11 of those have played 10 or less games. So let's not pretend he is behind the curve development wise.

He has had a stop start two years where he missed some considerable time. I think some stability and consistency is what he needs. If it's a one off then fine, but if he is going to be bounced between here and Utica I am not a fan.

I understand the whole “let him develop” argument, but to be honest, we shouldn’t have a player in the AHL who is NHL quality while having players in the NHL that are AHL quality.

Not saying that Holtz is NHL ready, but I’m willing to take a look and see.

I imagine we will be seeing the majority of his minutes coming on the power play. Not expecting him to get much time 5v5 so I don't think we are going to be getting a true look.

Having said that his future probably is on the lower play ripping shots of the hash marks.

This move is probably in response to the fact that the Devil's lead the NHL in xG (as you and Sterio discussed the other day) but are 27th in actual goals. Got to see if someone can finish from somewhere.

Not at all what  I was implying. I just pointed out players from his draft class are starting to hit the NHL. So I don’t really consider it “rushing him” when he’s about to turn 20 soon. Especially when I see what Lucas Raymond (who also came from the SHL) is currently doing for the Wings.

If Holtz comes up and doesn’t look ready then send him back down.

That’s pretty much it right there. If he can’t hack it, he’ll go back. It’s not going to derail his development.

As long as it’s not like they did with Zacha, where he was a full time NHLer when he was not ready to be, and they just let him struggle.

Prove me wrong fitz. I wouldn’t put a kid surrounded by a bunch of losers.
for the record I am wrong with 98% of my assessments.

Unless you Never promote him, odds are he is going to be in the NHL with most of these guys at some point anyway. Are you going to leave him in the AHL until the team is good??

I mean, doesn’t that also apply to Dawson Mercer? Won’t know if Holtz is ready until you actually give him a shot.

Absolutely on board with this.  If he’s not quite ready, we’ll know soon enough.  But given the state of the team at this team, this is worth a try.
