2022 New York Mets season thread

As furious as I am with that phenomenally gutless performance from Peterson, would’ve been nice if the offense could’ve come up with a lot more clutch hits.  Two runs isn’t often enough against the Yankees.

Kudos to Lugo, terrific outing in a very up-and-down season.

OK boys…Escobar with a lead off double.  Now at third with one out.  GET HIM HOME!!

So the latest "Groups of 10" update (they're closing in on 10 of these, and 100 GP on the season):

First:  7-3

Second:  7-3

Third:  6-4

Fourth:  6-4

Fifth:  7-3

Sixth:  6-4

Seventh:  6-4

Eighth:  5-5

Ninth:  6-4

Tenth:  5-3 so far

As much as I get on them sometimes for some of the uglier "Same Old Mets" moments, that kind of consistency is pretty impressive.  Yeah, would be nice to see them get on one of those real unconscious kind of tears, but at least through July, they've managed to completely avoid the major slumps.

Also fair to point out that the Braves were 3.0 games behind the Mets on June 29...come the start of play on July 29, they're still 3.0 games behind.  Yeah, there's been some fluctuation (the Braves had pulled to within a 1/2 game less than a week ago), but it's not like the Braves haven't been winning; they're 15-9 over their last 24 GP...Mets have gone 14-8 over the same frame.  Hasn't always been pretty and the Mets aren't like the Yankees (who can bully up on horrendous teams with the best of them), but on this off-day it's time to give them some kudos...because for all of the "Same Old Mets" the battered fan in me retorts from time to time, the fact is that this team has weathered a LOT of storms this year, and is not falling apart.  They deserve some love.

And by 8/18, the Mets will have played the Braves 9 times in a 15-game stretch, that begins on 8/4 (one off-day in there, but also a DH at home against the Braves).  If the Mets take 6 or more of those (assuming they don't fall apart against other opponents), hard to imagine that the Braves will be able to take the division.  But gotta take care of business against the Marlins and Nationals...of those six, Mets gotta find a way to win four.

Local Yankee fan popping in to say congrats on a good series. Hoping when it moves to Yankees stadium the pitching matchups will be a little better (it was the Yankees 5th and 6th SP because of the horrible MLB scheduling post-ASG against the Mets current 1 and 2) and I'm hoping Stanton plays. Not the only reason the Mets won, but I'd like to think if the Yankees had Cole/Taillon/Cortes out there for at least one of the games, and Stanton in the lineup instead of Joey fvckin Gallo we would've muscled out a split.

These are pretty clearly 2 of the 4 best teams in baseball. If the playoffs go chalk and it's Yankees/Astros and Mets/Dodgers, it might be the most electric Championship Series week of all time. Not sure that's hyperbole, either.

Thanks man.  Mets are solidly good but not great...they do enough to win a lot of nights and have been very steady...they're at their best when their small-ballin'.  If deGrom comes back and stays healthy AND manages to make all of his rotation turns down the stretch, the Mets become more "very good".  FWIW at the moment, the Mets' starters appear to have gotten through some earlier season doldrums...Carrasco (1.21 ERA over his last 4 starts, though he's been a bit lucky) and Bassitt (2.43 ERA over his last 6 starts) have picked it up lately.  And of course Scherzer is back and has been lights-out.  I keep waiting for Walker to crash back to Earth, but it hasn't happened yet.  deGrom is basically taking Peterson's spot (Pete did as much as possibly could have been asked of him as a starter).

Don't forget teams like San Diego, Atlanta, or a hot Toronto team...teams like that may not have the gaudiest winning%s or run differentials, but those kinds of teams can really surprise their fair share of teams, especially if everything starts clicking for them at just the right time.

I don't watch enough NL ball to comment on San Diego or Atlanta, but unless Toronto has a sensational trade deadline I can't see them making a legitimate run. They've got a hell of an offense but their pitching staff is horrendous, starters and relievers alike.

Atlanta got off to a slow start but then went on an insane tear (36-14 over their last 50 GP) to get back into things...they've leveled off some as of late, but are on pace for about 96 wins.  San Diego has been tough on the Mets this year...they're 4-2 against the Mets, and have looked quite solid against them.  But the Dodgers have had their way with the Padres...some teams just match up better against certain teams.  I'd be nervous about the Mets facing either one of them.

Mets acquire OF Tyler Naquin and LHRP Philip Diehl from the Reds for a pair of low minor leaguers.  Naquin’s a decent lefty bat who’s platoon material…Diehl‘s a lefty pitcher who’s done little at the major league level.  It’s OK (Naquin’s obviously the “get” here)…like Vogelbach, not much to all that get excited about.

Another of those games where you think at least this team isn't going to choke whatever comes in October...down 3-0 in the nominal letdown game against the pesky Marlins but Bassitt straightens out and Marte/Nimmo provide the punch to get game #1.

This is just ridiculous...Diaz is well on his way to the best season by any Met reliever ever.  The FA negotiation this offseason is gonna be pretty tricky lol

Yeah Diaz has found a level I don’t think even he imagined he could find.  He basically needs around 10 pitches to get through most innings, usually striking out at least 2.  Beastly isn’t a strong enough word.

Last 9 appearances:  9.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 21 K.  Pure insanity.

Mets now 63-37, and just went 7-3 over this last group of 10.  7-3 or 6-4 for 9 out of 10 groups…they went 5-5 in the other.

The big series against the Braves is right around the corner.  Hope that team is starting to get a little frustrated with not being able to pull ahead yet.

Carrasco's another guy I was kinda worried would run out of gas in the second half...he still might but man so far so good at the moment.

For all the talk about how we need bullpen help - and god knows we do - if everyone is actually healthy in October at least one very good pitcher is gonna get moved to the pen in the playoffs between Carrasco, Walker and Bassitt.

Carrasco gave up all of three ER for the whole month of July (five starts, and no runs allowed in his last three).  Brought down his ERA from 4.85 to 3.79.  Feels like this came out of nowhere, but no complaints here.

Game isn’t over yet of course and crazy sh!t can happen, but love the way the Mets jumped on these guys early, doin’ it with some great smallball.  Only minor downer is that Walker’s throwing a lot of pitches…means the ‘pen will get a little more work than intended.  But no one’s going to bitch about a sweep.

We’re Mets fans, so of course we tend to get ornery quickly whenever they’re looking a bit iffy…but once again, after 100 games, time to remind ourselves that this team has won 63 games without a single pitch thrown by deGrom and with Scherzer having missed a good chunk of the season…and with Tylor Megill, David Peterson, and Trevor Williams having to make a lot of starts.  If we were told deGrom wouldn’t make his first start until August 2, would any of us think the Mets would’ve been 63-37 as July came to a close?  That was supposed to have been an Armageddon scenario, even with the starting pitching depth (and damn did they need every bit of that!).  But they overcame it…and pretty much every other obstacle along the way.

Teams really don’t like to make much of an effort against the Braves.  D’Backs lose in the ninth.

So for July, Braves went 18-8.  Mets about to go 17-8, barring the unthinkable.  At least the Mets didn’t give so much as an inch this month.

Nats up next.  They’re 5-5 in their last 10 games, and that includes a win against the Braves, a pair of victories against the Dodgers in LA, and a win against the Cardinals.  Just a reminder that sh!t can happen sometimes…can’t take anyone too lightly.

Yeah all the Mets can really do against the Braves is beat them since they’re gnats that won’t go away. At least they’re doing their part on the field, we’ll see how well they do their part off the field with the trade deadline beyond papering the edges with Vogelbach and Naquin
