Yanks deal for Scott Effross:

Scott Effross Stats | Baseball-Reference.com

He has pretty solid numbers...nice pickup.

If anything, the fact that the Yankees didn't get Robertson has me thinking that a Robertson/Contreras package to the Mets remains in play.  Somehow the Mets having a combined OPS+ in the low 50s hasn't hurt them too much, but Sweet Jesus it's time for an upgrade!

And the Braves become the third team in 2022 to realize that de-'roided Robinson Cano has nothing at all left...

Fully expected this...as far as Ohtani went, this was strictly "Right, I'll believe it when I see it."  This was never something that had to happen right now or be rushed.

Yankees did get Montas though lol...strangely I'm okay with this cause the Mets didn't so much need him (knock on wood) as much as some fvcking bullpen arms and another righty bat at DH/bench, at least Montas didn't go to an NL team though it wouldn't shock me if the Padres managed to make a splash move - even besides the strange Hader deal.

They could use Contreras too but it sounds like the Cubs are just waiting for us to trip over our own dicks again a la the PCA for Baez deal last year, never mind that was completely different management.

Yeah with Scherzer and now deGrom back, and Bassitt and Carrasco pitching much better as of late (and of course Walker keeps on keepin’ on, even though it’s easy to picture the clock striking midnight on him), can’t make much of a case for the Mets shopping for a starting pitcher.  Guess May could almost be seen as a deadline acquisition (not that I love the idea, but I can see the Mets spinning it that way).

I get the feeling that the Mets might be done, but we’ll see.

BTW Contreras just had a brutal July…put up a OPS under .500.  So there’s that.

67 Mets HBP and yet they always refuse to do anything about it.  The one thing about this team that can be so infuriating.

Mentioned this before but damn did Corbin’s ability just completely disappear.  At least the Mets are doing what they’re supposed to against a guy like that…score runs off him.  Gotta be tough to be him though…to know that most nights, you’re going to get rocked.  He’s given up an insane amount of hits.

Max didn’t have his best stuff tonight, but still managed to go 6.2 IP.  Dude does battle.

re:  Hader, he'd actually been struggling some lately...and Devin Williams has been quite good (and will replace Hader).  Hader is also headed towards his final arbitration year and the Brewers didn't want to pay him a fortune.

Yeah curious to see how much the Mets pay up for Contreras or Contreras/Robertson.  If it turns out the Cubs were asking for the moon, I'll understand if the Mets decide to pass.

Some of these deals have been curious so far - the Braves dealt Will Smith to the Astros for Jake Odorizzi…rare that you see two contenders deal major leaguers with each other, albeit in different leagues but they did meet in the World Series last year

Didn't realize how solid Odorizzi's been, but he's a guy that you're never sure can stay healthy...he missed a chunk of May and all of June this year.

The Mets of course have won seven in a row, which can easily put fans into "Well we're winning, what's the problem?" mode, but that's the problem...the abundance of bad teams gives upper-echelon teams plenty of opportunity to recover and get back on a roll (see the Yankees).  In between all of those "sh!tty opponents" series, you don't have that many real measuring stick games.  As much as we'll bitch about crap teams seemingly lying down against the Braves...not like the Mets haven't significantly fattened up on those teams as well...and they've really cleaned up in the East.  They've gone 28-9 against the Phillies, Marlins, and Nationals.  4-3 against the Braves so far, with the big 5-game series looming.

But how many really "tough" teams have the Mets faced?  Houston ate them for lunch, and the Padres took four out of six.  They did sweep the Yankees.  Held their own against the Dodgers.  And they are 27-21 against teams over .500 (a good chunk of that coming against the Phillies).

Speaking of the Phils, gotta admit, Wheeler's been damned good for the Phillies...basically put it all together from the moment that he got there...and in a bandbox-type of ballpark to boot.  His contract has actually represented good value.  But he was up and down just enough with the Mets (including being just up and down enough in his final season in NY) and enough of an injury history that I could understand the Mets (especially the Wilpon Mets) not wanting to pony up for him at the time.  But he's proven the doubters wrong.

Guessing the Padres will ante up to keep Soto in time.  Easy for some to say "Well why couldn't the Mets do this?", but it's not like they were ever really seriously linked to Soto.  I was never expecting them to go get him.

Hosmer could actually kill this thing (or make it more complicated)...he has a no-trade clause and the Nats are apparently not a team that he wants to go to.

Nats did get a pretty serious gaggle of prospects at least...sucks if you're a Nats fan to see a guy like Soto get away from you while still so young.  Kinda surprised the Nats weren't unable to unload Corbin in that deal, but guess they wanted to make sure the prospect haul was top-notch.

Oh and AFAIC, the Mets are now on the clock.  As long as the Nats don't get stupid, the price for Contreras (or of course Contreras + Robertson) shouldn't be too too crazy.  Make this happen!

There’s no way Rizzo was trading Soto in the division imo, so I was bracing for this. Just sorta puts more emphasis on winning the division since as it stands Dodgers-Padres-Braves are one side of the bracket and Mets-Cards-Phillies would be the other side of it

The only way would be if the Mets were rich with prospects and willing to give up some top ones, but they definitely don't have a ton of them.  And considering that this is not a young team, they do have to be a little careful with giving them away.

So Hosmer did indeed say no to the Nats and wound up being traded to Boston (no announcement on the return just yet).  Apparently this won't hold up the Soto deal...curious to see who the Nats get in his stead.

Luke Voit apparently lol...dude probably wants to wring Hosmer's neck for invoking his NTC

And the Mets finally make a deal...JDDavis and a couple of prospects for ancient Darin Ruf lol.  Guess he's the RH complement to Vogelbach in the DH platoon.

Fine, now address the damn bullpen and make one more play for Contreras

Is Sandy handling things behind the scenes?  Because all of three of these acquisitions are about as Sandy-like as it gets...right down to the low BAs across the board.

For some reason Billy's trying to moneyball the DH position with a platoon.  I'm fine with platoons at any actual position but a platoon at DH is very eh...fine for the regular season I suppose but that becomes a negative when teams start merry-go-rounding with bullpens in playoff games.  Not like you can pinch-hit for DH's easily.

Yeah seems like the Mets are stacking up on quantity right now, more than anything else.  We'll get the "Well deGrom and May are like deadline acquisitions, and we didn't have to give up anything for them!" line.

Get Contreras, and I'll say this deadline was a success...that's a position that clearly needs upgrading.  Robertson would've been a solid grab.

At least JD Davis is gone.  That guy was borderline worthless this year.  It wasn't like he struck out in every key AB...but man it sure felt that way.
