i know there’s the funky contract language that makes Meier a risky acquisition but my god the idea of throwing him on Nico’s line for the next 8+ years does something to my pants

What language are you talking about?

I make myself chuckle.

Ok, anyway — Meier’s agent was shifty. A typical contract that’s for $6m per year for 4 years will have some fluctuation in base salary and signing bonus over the duration of the contract. Maybe year 1 is $2m salary $4m signing bonus, year 2 is $4m salary, $4m signing bonus, year 3 is $4m salary, $2m signing bonus, year 4 is $2m salary and $2m signing bonus. Something like that.

Meier’s agent negotiated it so that the final deal is $0 in signing bonuses, and $10m in salary. Why is that important?

Because in order to “qualify” an RFA, you essentially say “if we don’t agree to a contract, you can still play for us for 1 year at a given salary.” That given salary is always the previous year’s BASE SALARY. Aka, to qualify Meier, it’s a 1y10m deal.

It often doesn’t matter. But, if Meier isn’t getting the contract he likes, he can just say “ok sounds good”, sign the qualifying offer, and become an unrestricted free agent at 27 years old at the conclusion of next year. He’d be betting on himself, but another strong season and he’ll all of a sudden have quite a few teams willing to pay him a ton of money. It’s risky, because the contract was clearly set up in a way to guarantee Timo either “you will get PAID after your final year” or “you will be an unrestricted free agent after a 1y10m deal”.

Absolutely can’t wait until he’s up here. Shame it’ll probably be 2023 but no need to rush him

Arguably the need is there, but it’s just a bad idea. I think we have a sizeable hole on defense right now between PK departing and Smith playing like he does. Luke would slot right in.

But I definitely agree that another year of seasoning will help his development.

Still haven’t seen anything about the Michigan coach returning or not. If he doesn’t, I wonder if Luke would have second thoughts about going back? I definitely don’t want to rush him, but I would feel a little better about him joining the big club now that Nas is gone. And I think he’s probably too good to spend an entire season in the AHL.

I’m fine with Luke staying at Michigan for one more year. It really helped Quinn, and I think it’ll help Luke too. I’d prefer he stay, honestly.

I heard speculation he was not returning. I tend to think he would be better off in the AHL than in college, personally.

I could obviously be very wrong about this but it feels like it's either Michigan or the NHL for Luke.  The only way I think that he smells the AHL is if he has a tough time in the NHL (as opposed to Utica being a stepping stone) and gets sent down for more seasoning...but even Smith didn't wind up playing in Utica this season, and that's a guy who really seemed to need it.

Not gonna lie...I really like that nASS isn't here to potentially ruin any more defensemen.  But hopefully whoever comes in to replace him has the slightest clue.  Gonna completely lose my sh!t if some nASS Part Deux is the next guy up.

Slaf and Nemec were very great against Canada. Nemec looked very solid. Both offensively and defensively. Slaf is a big version of Jack Hughes. I would prefer to trade down if mtl will decide to pick Slaf. Realy great draft and how awesome to have top 5 pick this year.

Severson score, and I would say score against. Typical Damon.

I would prefer 1 year in AHL or even in Ncaa for Luke  but if he can handle it - he can handle it. I'm just not a fan of rushing players, especially defenemen. I would say we have QB's, and I would prefer to give a chance to Nikita or Kevin, and find stayathome RD to partner them. We should trade Smith out from the beginning

Mercer looked good too. Hope Fitz will find right goalie. Team is full of talent.

What a play by Luke.

And then Galchenyuk scored on the move Jack keeps trying to no avail.

Everything I could say when I'm watching WC is that Slaf, Nemec and Jiricek over Cooley. Easily. But you should watch games ofcourse. It would be a great draft day for the Devils. We can't lose. They are great.
