If anything, you wonder if Petry was worth grabbing over just keeping Marino.  Petry is 34 and the Pens signed up for his Age 34/35 - Age 36/37 seasons.  Marino is obviously only 25 and on a lower hit.  I get that Petry can provide more offense, but maybe his best years are already behind him?

That is a better question, and somewhat more ponderous. Granted, I don't pay a lot of attention to other teams and had no idea who John Marino was when we traded for him, but if he played like this for them, one has to wonder why they would prefer a much older and more expensive Petry.

Petry currently has two more goals and two fewer assists than Marino, with both sitting at 7 points.

Same, didn't know much about Marino but if you're gonna effectively trade one guy for a guy several years older (who entering decline-years territory) who's also more expensive, that guy better be a considerable upgrade, and a lock to make your team better immediately.  Don't really see that being the case with Petry.

Yeah, they did get Ty and a 3rd-rounder as "maybe later" assets, but AFAIC Marino can be both a right now AND later asset.  It feels like a risk the Pens didn't really have to take.

And Marino was actually drafted by Edmonton, but apparently didn’t want to sign there. They traded him to Pittsburgh for a 6th round pick. There’s probably a couple teams/fanbases pretty annoyed seeing him play so well right now.

And Petry was traded to Montreal from Edmonton for a 2nd round pick in 2015...that pick was later traded to the Rangers, and then to Washington...who then used that pick to select...Jonas Siegenthaler.

Soooooooo I guess [as I inhale a great big bong hit] we can thank Petry for an being an NHLer and for helping the Devils to land both Siegs AND Marino?!  No waaaaaaaaaay...or do we thank Edmonton?!

I’ll just go with my usual “fvck everyone who isn’t us” so I don’t have to follow this logic or thank anyone.

I was not worried at all about Haula prior to last game - I think he's really in his own head at the moment.  He had a really bad first period and wasn't much better the rest of the game against the Yotes.

Just hope he gets that first one soon, because I love everything else that he brings.  Just needs to get the monkey off his back.

The good thing with Haula is that he'll be fine. He's shooting the puck a lot and getting chances. Just can't convert on one. He's doing all the right things. Read an All about the jersey blog that went over how he's been incredibly unlucky.

It was a Will Butcher situation. Marino finished college at Harvard for his fourth year of school. Didn't want to be in Edmonton.

This was NOT me, but does anyone know what it was? Sounds like it was up my alley.

She ended up tweeting "Vitek Vanecek taking the bulk of the reps at #NJDevils practice today, which is a great sign." after so I am going to guess she said that he was taking the majority of the load.

As of today:

NHL save%:  .901

Devils save%:  .901

Yep...FINALLY, the Devils are getting league-average goaltending...obviously VV has been even better than that (.915).  Nice to have that too.

VV .946 Sv % over his last 7 games too.  Pretty remarkable. Credit to the D for playing sound in front of him, and to VV himself for stopping what he's supposed to stop.
