So that means they didn’t show up for 1/3 of the practice, while looking confused and disorganized the other 2/3?

LOL I laughcried at this.

They were saying things like "gotta practice how you play" which is something my bantam coach used to preach. Come on guys, it's professional sports. This is the NHL. Everyone is assuming you guys are doing these things daily, why are you saying it like it is something worth talking about? No sh!t practice how you play, we learned that at 13.

Given how long people were calling for them to "Fire Hynes", I don't think that's accurate.

That's a good point. That lasted a long time. I think there are a couple circumstances now that make this a perilous time for Ruff. 1) the team's expectations after all the player moves in the off-season and 2) Ruff was already put on notice when he wasn't dismissed along with the previous assistants.

How do you know that though? I know the rumor has been that he's on a short leash but does anyone know that for sure or are we just making assumptions?

My heart says give him 5 games and then Brunette takes over but my brain is telling me that this thing could skid until December.

I'm making an assumption that the GM is putting you on blast when he dismisses the assistants and lets you come back.

I know we all live for accountability and this is very much a results-driven society today, but 5 games is nothing. I would bet a million bucks he's not fired before the 6th game of our season. That sh!t just doesn't happen.

When you look at how teams like the Blues and the Islanders (I think?) in recent memory have turned their seasons around after the new year, I think that makes GMs more inclined to wait and see how things are going a lot longer than a lot of us fans have a tolerance for. Granted those types of turnarounds are the exception not the norm, but I still think GMs are pretty indecisive, and no one wants to give the axe to their head coach if they can avoid it, especially not after just 5-10 games into a new season

There was no reason whatsoever to bring him back.  Fitz already failed the test by doing that in the first place. His track record with waiting to long on coaching changes is abysmal.  However, I still don't think it's all coaching either, the goaltending is a question mark and so is the roster until it proves otherwise. Hopefully it doesn't get late as early as it has the last few years where there's no meaningful games after the holidays.

I would say that's a fair assumption. When you find yourself in that type of situation I think it's goes without saying that the GM is giving you the benefit of the doubt that you might be able to save your own ass if they shake up your direct reports and allow you to hire your own staff.

At that point if you still fail then you have only yourself to blame and a pink slip is likely not far off.

If they were hired together or Ruff hired them I'd agree with you that the implication is there. In this case Nass and Recchi were part of the previous administration so I'm not sure. They should have gotten canned long before they did.

I think that's the point - Ruff is allowed to stay for exactly those reasons. The GM isn't going to fault him for something that necessarily wasn't his idea. Now though, he's rid of those boat anchors and was largely able to choose the people who are under his command. So to me there's no more excuses, which is essentially the same as being put on notice.  I don't want to speak for Jerrydevil since he's the one who first said it, but that's my take on the situation.

I may be misremembering this, but didn’t the Blues turn it around after a coaching change?

Without a doubt!

There's another thing that was eye-opening besides the fans booing right off the bat this season. It was Miles Wood making a statement the day after the Philly loss that he was tired of playing for a losing team. Urgency after Game 1 (that locker room might be pretty tense). I thought that was pretty extraordinary, and an indication that this won't be permitted to fester under the current coach if things don't pick up.

I have to tell you, as a fan, I was unsettled watching the Red Wing game. Things felt off.

Looking forward to seeing if the 40th patches are on the black alternates; the shoulder position where they are on the normal jerseys would look like crap with all of those stripes, so I assume it'll go right there.

Hynes at least had 1 playoff season made here to fall back on, Ruff has nothing here.
