GDT - Devils vs Capitals 11/26/22 7pm MSG

Just got back…one of those weird games where the score doesn’t truly match what happened on the ice, but when your goalie has a great game and your budding superstar notches a hat trick, you leave happy regardless.

Everyone lost their minds when Jack finished off his trick…the place just exploded and it was an awesome moment to be a part of.  And Zetterlund’s goal celly was hysterical.

This season feels like one endless exorcism, and now it’s the Capitals and their seemingly endless domination that’s the latest ghost to be banished.  I’m loving every last moment of this.

Oh and bought myself a Hughes RR 2.0 jersey tonight.  Gotta admit…I like these things.  I do.

I still don't even know what that was on Wednesday night, but the Devils coming back from that sh!tshow with two convincing wins has me completely sold on this group for this year.

Do you realize how close this team was to keeping this streak going?  What was great about the Leafs game was that the Devils lost but they weren’t beaten…they were so close to at least getting a point out of that one.  They’re legitimately in almost every game that they play.

Yeah, Vanecek did to Washington what Murray did to the Devils. It's nice having a goalie win a game for you.

What can you say about Hughes, those first two are ridiculous goals.

I wish I was at that crapshow! Playoff quality hockey in November, right there.

I don't buy a lot of jerseys but while quarantining with covid in early 2021, I did buy a game worn Zacha jersey.   Sometime early this season I thought to myself, I may as well wear the Zacha jersey to watch the game in the house tonight because where else am I ever going to wear this thing?   It's basically become my purple bar and I'm sitting on my couch wearing it every other night

Those are “only a select few can score like that” kinds of goals.  Special.

And on another note…Siegs is a friggin’ +23.  Nine Devils are +10 or better.  Crazy.

If it wasn't clear, that was my point.  Everything went wrong that night and I thought we were clearly the better team against the Leafs but it also takes a lot of maturity for the players to not come out flat after something like that.   The fact that they've just moved on and won the next two games in convincing fashion tells me that this team is serious about winning.

As you’re probably aware, there’s a McMullen Night GW Zacha in my collection…haven’t worn it since he’s been dealt.  Not exactly in any rush to break it out again, heh heh…I almost feel like it would curse the Devils if I did.

Oh no I absolutely got what you were going for…I said it at the time but as frustrating as that game was, you knew the Leafs had to be thinking “Damn we could’ve lost that one very easily.”  The Devils overnight have become an absolute bitch of a team to play against.  And I love it.

The Caps msg boards are going nuts.  Fire the coach, trade Mantha, fire the GM, trade Carlson….I love it!

you are right, the Caps had their chances to win this one and, basically, Hughes and VV won it.  There were times when the Devils did control the run of play, but there was plenty of time were the Caps controlled the game.

Despite all that, I am happy about the win because the Caps are still a really good team and they won with one less skater.  They figured out how to win this one.

I think there are 3 Devils in the top 5.  I need to go check.

It’s actually 5 in the top 10.  2 in the top 3.

I'm a notable Blackwood apologist, but I am not hating Vanecek/Schmid right now. They both look equally capable right now.  Sound positionally, good rebound control, don't get phased when they give up a goal.

I don’t hate MB, I just think he is injury prone and VV/Schmid are better with what we’ve already said.  I also think a healthy MB will get us a nice haul at the deadline, so I do hope he comes back and plays well.  Despite how things have been going for MB for the 3 seasons, I think he has value for a team on the rebuild or a team that needs more depth at that position.  That said, would Fitz trade a healthy MB for more size and depth at the forward position and go with a rookie backup into the playoffs?

I gotta say Zetterlund is really growing on me. For him that was a redemption goal and that's why he was pumped. He had no clue why Oshie went after him. It was kind of comical reading his lips. The "what did I do?" Obviously, the caps thought he was showing them up.

Watched this game at a buddy’s house who is a big caps fan so I listened to their broadcast.

holy sh!t. i started writing some of the garbage down on my iphone it got that bad.

”this goes to show you that even mediocre teams can rip off several wins in a row.”

”at its core this is a very flawed and very overachieving hockey team.”

”there isn’t a single metric that points to this team being able to sustain any sort of pace like this moving forward.”

“this team really isn’t all that.”

”the devils are reaching. they aren’t there.”

I can’t stand their broadcast.  They are such homers.  We all know Chico and Daneyko are Devils, but they will rip into the Devils when they suck and point out what the opponent does well.  It’s the same with Boston, Calgary, and Rangers.

What a couple of jealous douches.

Guys, your team is friggin’ 9-11-3 this season…so what’s your excuse against everyone else?

And if they’re all pissy about their team not playing well, fine…but good lord, don’t make sh!t up just to feel better about themselves.  Devils have played well from both the eye test and metric standpoints in most of their games…this season has absolutely not been some unsustainable fluke.  Last night was a different story in that the Devils won’t win that kind game by four goals very often, but when you’re getting terrific play in net, you can find a way to win those games where it’s not all necessarily clicking.

As for “not being able to sustain the pace”, well duh, don’t think anyone believes that the Devils are going to keep playing over .800 hockey.  But it sure is fun to see how long that they can.

EDIT:  if they’re strictly going by the two games the Devils have played against the Caps and are assuming that that’s how the Devils play most of the time, then I can see where they’re coming from a little better, but that’s still a terrible take, in that they clearly haven’t done any research about the Devils at all.  If they did, they would know that the Devils are legitimately outplaying their opponents most nights, and not relaying strictly on goaltending and/or fattening up on shooting%.
