Thats why i'm really hoping we can go for Meier cause we know he has crazy chemistry with Nico and he'd fit in perfectly. I wouldn't want him just as a rental though.

That's another reason why Bratt signing a "fair" contract like Nico and Jack could go a long way to bring in guys like Meier. We're already close to the cap

For this year, yes, but a lot coming off for next year, with guys who won't be back...right now the Devils project to have just under $35M in cap space.  Of course anyone who leaves will have to replaced, and it doesn't look like the Devils have a ton in Utica ready to graduate.  We know Nemec and L Hughes will be cheap for a few years, but we're also assuming that they'll slot right in and play well enough to justify staying with the big club.  All of the RFAs figure to get raises (we'll see if Blackwood is retained), with Bratt of course getting a big one.  Will be interesting to see if Graves is brought back.

But yeah, you bring in Meier and you get top-heavy in a hurry.

yeah and hoping Hughes, Nemec or whoever doesnt command crazy money right off their ELC. Also hoping the cap goes up a few millions over the next 3-4 seasons

But its just the reality of how you have to win in this league. Often you win one year knowing the next you'll have to move some guys.

Oh, I wasn't saying not to do it, just an observation lol.

The good thing is that if the Devils do get top-heavy with Meier joining the fray, at least it's with a young group that overall will be getting paid fairly.  It sucks a lot more when you're getting top-heavy with a lot of declining assets in their early 30s because you signed them in their late 20s (UFAs).  The core as is (assuming Bratt sticks around) should have a nice chunk of prime years left.
