Gotta love Sportsnet. They're now saying the Rangers are the "team to beat" and best in the NHL because of Kane.

I think we might have something to say about that with first crack at them most likely.

The Blue Jackets play in LA on March 16th.  Can't imagine that's going to be fun for him.

Probably not but I’m sure he’ll get a first-class tribute…and in time, a number retirement ceremony and a statue that looks nothing like him.

I feel for him but at the same time, dude…you are KILLING your team at this point.  An .845 save% over your last 15 games?!  What exactly are the Kings supposed to do here?  They can’t kill their season and not address a major shortcoming.

And the fact is that he’s been largely meh for years now…since the start of the 2018-19 season, he’s put up a .896 save% and a GSAA of -60.6.  This is Mackenzie Blackwood-type stuff.

He's lived in LA for over a decade and probably doesn't want to have to up and move his family to Ohio.

No I get that this sucks for him for now but not like he’s getting re-signed to stay with Columbus (he’s a UFA at season’s end).  He’ll be right back at home in April.

Hopefully for him they’ll make the statue with his goalie mask on.

Well, that is why there are NMC and NTC. He can be pissed at his agent I guess

They've become the league standard for a reason. He has every right to be upset especially considering how stable he and his family has had it, but that is how the business works.

He's been horrible for the last 2-3 years and there was a trip to the playoffs that he was in net for and didn't elevate his game so there had to be a level of writing on the wall there. Was he a cap casualty? It seems like it.

Of course the family stuff sucks, but how many more years is he realistically going to play?

EDIT: Well I guess last year wasn't horrible. He's been year on - year off bad.

This is strictly temporary though, in the grand scheme...Columbus' last game is on 4/14.  He just has to suck it up until then...and he even gets to go home briefly, on 3/16 (when they play the Kings).  They then play the Ducks on 3/17 as well, so he gets to stay in the general area too for another day.  There's no reason for him to uproot his family.

He's actually going to be barely even be in Columbus, as the BJs have a boatload of road games to finish out their season...13 of their remaining 21 games are on the road.

He could just retire.

Was wondering about that too, can he just not report?  If anything I would think the BJs would want to play him as much as possible to solidify tanking.  He's been as bad as it gets this year, especially lately...and the BJs have actually been a lot less awful lately...7-5-4 in their last 16.  They may not really want that, heh heh.

Right, and he'll be backing up Merzlinkins to wrap up the year and likely sitting through most of it, so that's why I'm thinking it may have just been a salary dump. Could even flip him to a contender for picks before the deadline if you wanted to.

I see him going right back to LA or signing the one-day deal to retire there anyways. He deserves that and the big jersey retirement for what he did for that franchise, like Brown, Doughty, and Kopi.

They could play Merzlinkins or Quick and I don't think it's going to affect their tank job.

They could probably just split their time at this point (not like either have torn it up, though Merzlinkins has actually not been awful lately), assuming Quick reports and wants to play.  And yeah can see him doing the one-day deal thing as soon as he's done with the BJs.

Can't see a contender being interested in Quick...he's simply finished.

If he retired could that affect the trade?

I’m not sure how it works but it might negate it. I don’t think it would come to that. He seems like a guy who would do the professional thing and play out the year.

Yeah he only has to survive 20 some odd games and then that’s it’s.

Lars Eller traded to COL. The Caps appear to be sellers. Fitz, please go get Tom Wilson!

I think it's a cap issue at this point.  Devils just don't have the room to add anything significant without dumping someone.  Wilson makes a solid chunk of change (over $5 million AAV).

Caps trading Wilson (who is still under contract and really effective) will send a sign to their russian captain that this is over !
They wanna offer him a (non possible) last run with a good team ! Even if they got more chance to win the lottery rather than the Stanley... I don't see them selling this key player !

.. or with a fat big offer ! Not sure we can still do this after sending our first draft pick(s)

No the Caps are not trading Wilson, and they are only selling pending UFA's who they can not or don't want to re-sign this off season.

They tried to get a deal done with Orlov, he wanted 6 years at 31, they only wanted to go 3 years, so they traded him to Boston.

They made a great trade yesterday with the Leafs, getting a 22 year old d, and sending Tor another pending UFA d plus giving up the 1st they got from Boston.

They are basically retooling thier roster, knowing as long as Ovie is on the team, they won't tear it down, but they also know they have to change, so this is what they are doing.

After their trade, they resigned another of their pending UFA's, so again they are picking and choosing who they want on their team in the future, and selling who they either don't, or could not re-sign currenly.

The Devils can for sure make another move or two, Wood would be easily moved if they give up a mid rd pick, the question is what is out there that they want and can they make a deal or deals.

Eller was someone EF said we were interested in, and Colo traded a 2025 2nd for him, so if someone is of that value available that is what NJ is looking at for cost.

He is an UFA, so yeah the price is not cheap, I am stunned at the Neiderreiter deal from last week and how Winnipeg only traded a second for another year of control with him now.

That was my suggestion (Wood + mid round pick for "future considerations", just to clear space), but someone suggested that Wood is crappy enough at this point that any team willing to do us a space-clearing favor might ask for a higher pick in return.  I'd be willing to give up a 3rd-rounder myself, depending on what that cleared-up space would be used for next.
