Spending draft capital for rentals is getting harder and harder to justify, but the Rangers never change.

Rags Management (probably): "Rentals? We'll take two! Here's first round picks!"

I envision it to be like some kinda overdone caricature of a cartoonish film executive,  smoking a oversized cigar:

”We need names people! Big names that can go on that marquee! This is Broadway! This is MADISON SQUARE GARDEN! BUY BUY BUY”

On one hand, a team that has a goalie like Stesterkin always has a chance to go on a run.

But on the other, I feel like they’ve settled into being a team that will be good enough to make the playoffs most years (barring multiple injuries), but simply won’t make much noise once they get there…maybe they win a round here and there, but can’t see them going deep.  And Drury doesn’t seem terribly creative.

We’ve been over it, but if I’m an Islander fan I have zero faith that Lou has the answers to get my team to a Cup.  And yeah, he’s leaving a hell of a mess behind.

So the reason Lou signed Varlamov for his Age 35-38 seasons is because of how much of a mentor he’s been for Sorokin.

Even if that’s the case, is the feeling that Sorokin can’t possibly continue to play well without Varlamov around?  Did Lou really need to go four years for him?

This is why if I’m an Islander fan I really question some of his moves.  Just don’t see how that team can do any major playoff damage in the years to come.

What I do wonder is if they THINK these moves are the ones to win now.

You and I share similar feelings about analytics but they seem to completely disregard them entirely.

“nah, that guy is good, he put up 73 points last year, so did that guy. He’s almost 40? Who cares those numbers are sustainable. They’ll repeat it. Buy them”

Probably has to do with the fact that so many teams run a two-goalie system now, nearly 50-50 split.  So I don't think the thought is as much that Sorokin will suffer without Varlamov, but rather making sure they have a capable 1B around to handle the other half of the load.

No I get the split part of the equation but Varlamov is getting up there.  Why not sign him to a couple of years and then try to fill that position with someone younger with good years still ahead of him?

Please, Please, Please let this be true.   I will probably piss myself if the Leafs answer to flaming out again in the playoffs around their top heavy core is the run it back again with the core 4, same coach but adding Domi and Ryan Reeves.  Swapping out the depth they had this year in ROR, Acciari, Bunting, and Luke Schenn for those two should definitely fix the problem.

AND they’re 8+ million over the cap with only 5m eligible for LTIR relief.

i wish GMs around the league would now NOT HELP THEM. But you know Bill Armstrong is about to play Lady Liberty to Treliving and be like “send me your weak and broken!”

So true. I'm sure it only a matter of days until he takes the Matt Murray deal off their hands.  The Leafs would still need to sign Ilya Samsonov though, so that puts them right back over.

I wonder if they are finally going to break up the core 4 and send Nylander packing.   Apparently negotiations aren't going that well.   I think they could do well to send him to Nashville for an entire line of the Preds young and cheap forwards.
