Time flies...he's about to enter his 17th NHL season, at the age of 36 (1101 GP).  I'm no big fan of the Staals, but three bros all with over 1100 GP in the NHL...that's some impressive sh!t.

It’s gonna be amazing, barring injuries or messy divorce, when 2 of the Hughes brothers do it entirely here, and Quinn joins them

I know we all hate the Canes but there’s something about the way this whole Dunedin/Waddell regime runs things that I respect the hell out of.  It seemed like it was going to be a disaster early on and it’s not the typical draft well/develop/trade and make the smart FA acquisitions that we all grew up with but they clearly have a way of running their hockey affairs that is different than everyone else and they stick to it.

meh the Canes are next years Bruins...

That's not the own you think it is. Lol. I think the Canes would take that happily, even if they do get bumped in the first round next year.

They're really good and I expect them to stay good. The core group is talented enough for them to stay a contender. I think the management has actually helped to keep them in this window for pretty long.

Imagine if they get Tarasenko AND somehow trade for Karlsson? It's a toss up if Karlsson can repeat his year, but he's not a bad player by any stretch.

Should we take a flyer on Zadina?

Another young player who you can throw on your 3rd line as a reclaimation project. I would take a flyer on him. Let him, Toffs and Holtz battle it out for the 2 middle six RW spots on the right side. If he doesn't make a good impression, you can send him down to the minors. Him or Holtz. Pressure would really be on Holtz then and CR76's prediction that Holtz ends up in the minors for another year is more likely.

It seems with the bodies that we've shed this year, it wouldn't be a bad move. He could be a Blake Coleman who just had to wait until he was 25-26 to really emerge and become a regular.

I agree to take a flyer on him, its under a $2m gamble for 2 seasons.

One thing though, he isn't waivers exempt though so if we want him to get time in the minors, we'd have to waive him as well. But if he isn't performing, its a risk we could be willing to take.

No.   There’s a reason a rebuilding team is throwing in the keys on him and no one else will take him at 1.8AAV.   If it weren’t for his draft position, this wouldn’t even be notable.   I would rather let our young AHL guys battle for playing time.

Btw taken one pick after Zadina? Quinn Hughes. That’s gotta really sting for Wings fans, especially with Quinn being right in their back yard. It’s like us taking Tedenby one pick before John Carlson.

Tedenby was three picks before, but that sure doesn’t make that one hurt any less.  fvcking Conte…

It's crazy to think that at the time, Zadina was thought of as the first round steal of that draft. Most people had him going third. I remember thinking Detroit was lucky that he fell to them. Pretty wild how that turned out.

Yeah, he mouthed off about wanting to spend the rest of his career making Montreal pay or something like that.   Not a great look now.

Btw, I know I rip on the Leafs a lot but at this point I’m starting to wonder what exactly is the Yzerplan in Detroit.   It just seems like he’s throwing a lot of money at a lot of players not likely to make much of a difference in their lineup.

Zadina was a Ken Holland pick, so that doesn’t count but for all the hype when he came over from Tampa, I’m not impressed with what Yzerman has done in Detroit so far at all.

Zadina cleared waivers, so he is now a free agent I believe.

Nah, it wasn't unconditional waivers, just normal one... which now i think means if he's traded, can go directly to the minors... I think

In Yzerman’s defense (to an extent, anyway), despite having several Top-10 picks the past several years, there’s been only one draft where they picked in the Top 5…that was #4OA Lucas Raymond.  It’s tough when you can’t sink your claws into that desperately needed cornerstone piece.  As great of a job as Fitz is doing, sure is nice to have a pair of 1OAs to work with…and then get a 4OA and a 2OA on top of those.
