The issue there is that he could play til he's 42 and maybe still be a freak of nature. I think at some point they have to start building around somebody else and Sid needs to slowly move to a complimentary piece. He can still be around and PIT can still pay him. I think even Sid would acknowledge it's time to think about the team and start building around somebody young. I see him signing a hometown deal and letting the GM know he can build around somebody else and spend that money.
jagknife
Guys, this is hockey wunderkind Kyle Dubas we’re talking about! Some of you are acting like his Leafs teams only made it out of the first round once during his tenure. Or that he didn’t fold over in contract negotiations leading to three guys on his previous roster combining for nearly 1/3 of his cap. Surely the guy has a plan to ensure the greatness of Pitt follows the same model and will be a perennial contender year after year…

It's different for Owners. I'm sure they know their window for actually competing for cups is closed. What's not closed is their window for selling out the arena every night, getting good TV ratings and selling tons of Crosby, Malkin and Letang jerseys. You're right though, they shouldn't be using draft capital at this point. If they can get EK on a Ryan Johanssen type deal then it's another story. It still won't lead to success but I guess it makes the trip down more exciting. 4 hours ago, jagknife said: Guys, this is hockey wunderkind Kyle Dubas we’re talking about! That’s one move that simply did NOT work out in Year 1 of Husso coming aboard. Yeah they’re not in a great spot…they don’t really have much of a talented core yet. They’re kinda in that “If everything breaks right then maybe a WC spot” malaise. Where I feel for Yzerman is if you don’t draft that top-end talent guy and you’re not willing to pull a Panarin-type move in paying a fortune for a guy who will only have so many prime years left, it’s easy to get stuck. I guess Yzerman's ears were burning. Maybe I doubted the Yzerplan too soon? Edited July 10, 2023 by Lateralous

Colorado Rockies 1976
BREAKING: Sharks Sign Filip Zadina (msn.com) One year, $1.1 million. It's a "what the hell, why not?" deal...given where they are, makes sense. TONS of UFA money coming off the Sharks' books after next season...if they want to go on a bit of a spending spree next offseason, they'll be able to do it...assuming any real difference-makers want to go there. Gotta wonder what Hertl's thinking right now, about the situation he's in.

The contract isn't great...he's making over $8 million AAV for what will be his Age 30-36 seasons, and over the past four seasons he's been good for about 28 G and 38 A per 82 GP. That's not bad but if I'm a team trading for him do I want to commit that kind of money and term to a guy who's firmly in "pretty good" territory? He feels like a Bo Horvat overpay (their career numbers are actually quite similar: Bo Horvat vs. Tomáš Hertl: Head-to-Head Stats Comparison | Stathead.com) Guess you'd have to be fully convinced that his production will increase with better teammates, which of course is certainly possible. But I get the feeling teams will be saying "If you want us to take on 7 years of a guy who will be in his 30s almost the entire time I have him, you're not getting as much for him as you think." That being said, I'll absolutely give you that there's ALWAYS a GM willing to make a short-sighted "gotta do SOMETHING" move, even if it means taking on a bad contract, or even if that player doesn't really move things along as much as his new team is hoping for. So I can see such a GM trying to make a misguided splash by bringing in Hertl, even if there aren't the right pieces in place to take advantage of whatever prime years Hertl has left.

That four-goal game came against the Rangers, in just his third NHL game…and right after a two-goal game against the Coyotes. Six goals through three games…hell of a start. Hertl and Timo are kind of similar, in that the promise of what people thought they could become hasn’t truly come to fruition. Hard to believe that Hertl has only two 30+ goal campaigns to his name thus far, but that’s it. And both Hertl and Timo have had some surprisingly lean years here and there…that’s why neither one is even close to a PPG for their careers. Timo is an interesting case because now he’s been “freed”…there really is very little excuse for him not to start putting up consistently solid numbers as a Devil. The complementary talent is in place here to bring out his very best; hell, as we all very well know, a guy he has terrific chemistry with in Nico appears to be completely hitting his stride. To be clear, I have no issue with Timo being brought here, at all…Fitz wouldn’t just go all out in assets, AAV, and term if he didn’t fully believe Timo could thrive here. And I give him a full pass for not exactly shredding it last year, because it was expected he’d have to make adjustments. But no excuses…he can’t finish with, say, 25 goals or so, with 50-55 points…if he can manage 75+ GP, I need to see about 35-40 and 70-80 points. I think those are reasonable expectations.
