Yeah didn't think that was happening...but I can see that contract aging very badly, due to the type of game that he plays.  Caps just signed up for his Age 30-36 years (extension doesn't kick in until the 2024-25 season).  I wouldn't have wanted to go more than four years for him, on top of the one that he already has coming to him.

Not a horrible AAV for Washington, but the term kind of sucks if I am being honest, and by year 3 or 4, he's gonna be a top 9-bottom 6 guy. We'll see how his body holds up with how he plays. Hopefully long and he plays out the whole contract.

Haha.....he'll be protecting no one

Tom Wilson was never happening here. We'll have enough struggles keeping the band together once Mercer, Hughes, and Nemec need raises.

Probably won’t be able to roll with super cheap goaltending forever either.

As long as the Cap continues its upward trajectory, Fitz should be able to keep Mercer, Hughes, and Nemec...

BUT, the question is will he want to and/or be able to keep his goaltending costs down?  That's what's going to allow him to initially re-up some of these younger studs.

Yep, just touched on the same exact thing.

Fitz might able to get way with cheap goaltending if Brennan comes up and takes right off in the next 2-3 years.  But that's hoping for a lot.

Hall might be on a contender if he signed long term with the Devils.  Instead he gets to play on a rebuilding Blackhawks team.  I guess it may not be so bad playing with Bedard.

Living in Massachusetts, I had the the opportunity to watch a lot of Bruins games.  As a hockey fan, watching Bergeron play was a joy.  It’s the end of a great career.

That said, I have to say that Bruins fans are the most miserable fans in all of sports.  Yeah, going to games is fun.  The Arena is loud and electric, but they will turn on their team and players on a dime.

For years, I would hear fans say, Bergeron is first ballot HOFer, greatest two way forward of all time, on and on.  On the day of his announcement, I hear, Kessel was a better player.

I am that wrong to think, as a hockey fan, that in the last 20 years, Bergeron is at the very least a better player than Kessel?

That can’t be a legitimate debate right? Bergeron has literally made a case to have a particular award renamed after him. Kessel is really good, and has carved out a hell of a career, but Bergeron is on another level.

Meet the new boss; same as the old boss 🤣

To be fair to Dubas, compared to Toronto, Pittsburgh is just giving him the keys to drive the car without Shanahan and entire board of directors riding shotgun and saying, "Are you suuuuure?" at every stop, turn or decision. To him it has to kind of feel like mom and dad are no longer around to tell him what he can't do. Hopefully he doesn't crash and burn for Pittsburgh's sake, but I'll happily sit here, laugh and watch a rival perennial playoffs/guarantee go away. It's been 16 years since they missed playoffs and I'm fine with us rising to their perennial playoff spot and them becoming the bubble team just trying to squeak in each year.

I envision Dubas letting Spezza really get his hands dirty as the AGM this year and you'll see Spezza in the GM spot next year if everything goes well. They'll move Trevor Daley or fill that AGM spot pretty quick once Spezza is GM.

I truly do not know how to think of that trade.

Pens really banking on Karlsson bailing out Jarry and Ned?

Montreal now has three meh goalies

and Grier doing… whatever the hell he’s doing in San Jose…

Pens are basically saying “We can’t blow this thing up properly as long as Crosby and Malkin are still in the fold, and we really want them to finish their careers here, so even though we have no chance to win a Cup as currently constructed, might as well have an entertaining team that should have its share of ‘fun to watch’ moments.”  Could get really ugly there in a couple of years.

Grier at least untangled himself from a rotten cap hit and a player who no longer wanted to be there.  Good thing Karlsson put up so many points last season, or the Sharks might have been stuck with him a LOT longer.

Ten million a year for four more years of Karlsson. They better hope he can still play that long

Also, no idea why Montreal was involved they got and sent nothing. Just to eat Petrys contract I guess.

Oh this can fail spectacularly for the Pens.  If they get the Karlsson of the previous two seasons prior to last year…

It's a huge risk by Dubas grabbing EK65, but he did get rid of a lot of the long-term "problem contracts" he has.

Petry and Granlund are the big ones they needed to drop. Lol. I think Dubas will regret sending Rutta the other way out of anyone.

Dubas is all in the PO Joseph and Ty Smith train. Good luck.

EDIT: Also, The Sharks did get something that Grier wanted to avoid, which was they only retained like 500k or a 1million off EK65's cap hit. Bravo to Grier to sticking to his guns and not wanting to retain much salary if at all. Might not feel like a huge win now, but it will in 2-3 years.

Sharks are retaining $1.5 million per season.  Yeah did better in that regard than what I was expecting.

Sharks got a pick out of it and didn't have to retain a lot. Prob didn't want to have to take on all those other guys, though. At least one is gone after next year.

I’ve seen Greer take some flak for not getting enough in return, but not like there was ever a bidding war where other teams wanted the privilege of taking on Karlsson’s contract.  Not to mention that the guy is 33, had not been anywhere near that productive as a Shark previously (also not to mention had missed a number of games to boot), and is getting paid plenty for his Age 33-36 years.  Even off a Norris-winning year, the return was only going to be so good.
