Jean Ratelle was the one that I absolutely did not get at all. Re: some of these retirements though, some of the "belated" ones I do get. When it comes to the Mets, the Wilpons (and ownerships before them) definitely missed out on retiring some worthy candidates...sometimes it's about righting the wrongs of tone-deaf owners. Admittedly I'm on the fence about Doc and Darryl getting their numbers retired now...it's starting to feel like the Mets are dusting off 1986 the way the Rangers love to do the same re: 1994. I'm a big Mets fan, but I'm really tired of 1986 stories and celebrations. Every older Mets fan knows every last story that's been told about that team; there's just nowhere left to go with nostalgia for that particular bunch. Yes, because the Mets have won so little throughout their history, a team like the '86 Mets will enjoy just a little more mystique. But it's enough. Doc and Darryl getting their numbers retired now feels like one more reason to live in 1986 again. I definitely do NOT get Willie Mays getting his number retired...most of his career was spent in San Francisco. He was no longer THAT Willie Mays as he wrapped up his career with the Mets. I do like that the Devils have gotten it right with the five players who are currently up there. Hope it stays that way.

Mike Commodore has had it out for him for years and that all stemmed from Mike not playing under him. Hard to give him much benefit of the doubt either. The Blue Jackets players have 0 loyalty to Babcock so if any of this was true they could easily have ousted him if they wanted to and been done with him.

Again though, why would they Blue Jackets players come out in defense of him? To protect him? In this day and age? It just doesn't make any sense when they could have easily got him fired at this point. They didn't even say no comment, the vets like Jenner and Johnny defended him and said it was nothing but him trying to know the guys better. Is it a tactic I would take as a coach? No but it doesn't seem to be what the chicklets guys are saying either. I personally think the guys at chicklets are absolute goofs and I never listen to them besides hearing Biz here and there during the playoffs. So Biz and Commodore are calling Jenner and Johnny liars... https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/blue-jackets-johnny-gaudreau-describes-photo-sharing-with-mike-babcock/ "I was a little upset how it got kinda blown out of proportion there," Gaudreau told Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek during a recording of their 32 Thoughts podcast "It sucks to see how it kinda got blown out in the wrong direction." Jackets captain Boone Jenner said, "To have this blown out of proportion is truly disappointing.” Gaudreau, a 10-year veteran and leader on the team, said "not a single person" on the team approached him to express discomfort with Babcock's photo access requests. He believes if a teammate does take issue with Babcock's approach, they will feel at ease going to Gaudreau, Jenner or Zach Werenski. "It was his way of kinda getting to know me, and I got to get to know him," Gaudreau said. "I wasn't uncomfortable at all. I was showing him pictures of my family. If I had (a) problem with it, I would've been like, 'I don't think I'm comfortable with that.' But I had no problem with it." Gaudreau, 30, explained that Babcock initiated the exchange by saying, "I want to get to know you. Show me some pictures of your family, what you like to in the summer, things you did this summer. So, I pulled up pictures." Gaudreau says he was happy to share photos of his 10-month-old daughter, Noa; his mother and father; his brother; his beloved and recently deceased grandmother; and his dog. "I've never had a coach take a direction like that and get to know me on a personal level like that right off the bat — and it was the first time I ever met him. He showed me a few things about his family and kinda talked about his kids and his wife and the dogs that he's watching now ... We got to know each other that way. Then we got right into the hockey after," Gaudreau said "When someone asks to see your family, I love my family. A big reason why I chose Columbus is I wanted to be around them more. "That's important to me. I think it's a great idea for somebody to get to know me is getting to know my family. "You know, Babs was thinking of flying down to Jersey and spend an afternoon at my house getting to know me and my family. It didn't work out that way, but he was planning to do that." The NHL has spoken to multiple Blue Jackets and, thus far, has found no sign of wrongdoing on Babcock's part. Nicomo
Maybe teams should stop hiring exclusively from the old boys club. Especially known weirdos and scumbags like Babcock & Quenneville. There’s tons of coaches out there that deserve a shot over these guys.

Not that I don't agree with you on the old boys club, but I always laugh at these "insider" quotes because they're always picked out of context and these guys always fence sit. Dreger doesn't know anything. He was put on the spot on the radio and he was basically like "sure anything is possible". It is like how these guys will report on signings being close but then say "there is a lot of moving parts and anything can happen" because they have to cover their asses. I'm not commenting on the possibility it could happen. It totally could. Maybe I should have said partial or not full context. What I mean is that they grab a snippit that makes it sound like Dregs has reason to believe it could happen but when you listen to the entirety of what he said he is really just saying it is a non-zero chance it could and he doesn't have any inside information. It is the same thing that happens at trade deadline when they report things but then say "but anything can change with a phone call". This way they get to report on things that they think could happen and take credit when it does but then not take credit when they get it wrong because they always caveat what they say. It's just something I notice with these guys. They could have been politicians. And the other media doesn't help this by snipping quotes in this way because in reality he made it clear in the interview he had no inside information on this. He might as well have been saying it is possible he gets promoted instead, because he can't rule it out. It's just "possible". He's the male version of that woman trying to be the cool mom by buying their kids booze so she can also get day drunk at home. He's the real-life Vince Vaughn from Old School, talks a lot of sh!t, says raunchy things and acts like the big dog with women but then freezes up. I'm CONVINCED he's overcompensating and there's at most 10% truth to his "stories."
